Mickey and Minnie rescue a litter of adorable kittens and take them home in Mickey’s Pal Pluto, the Mickey Mouse cartoon that found its way into theaters on this day in 1933. With some new pets to contend with, Pluto’s devil conscience tells him, “Go chase those kittens out of here or you’ll get thrown out on your ear.” His angel conscience, however, advises, “Don’t take that devil’s bad advice. Be a good dog, treat them nice.” Upon heeding the advice of his “good side,” he feels left out when Mickey pampers the new pets, and his jealousy incites Pluto to follow his “evil side,” putting him in the doghouse, so to speak, with Mickey. However, when the kittens fall in a well and Pluto comes to their rescue, he ensures his place as Mickey’s best pal. In 1941, with color film and much advanced animation and storytelling techniques, the film was remade as Lend a Paw, and this time he not only won the attention of Mickey Mouse, but the Academy as well, winning the Oscar® for Best Cartoon.
