In 1993, Disney entered the National Hockey League with their hockey team, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, named after the hockey-themed movie released the previous year. The Ducks were profitable in their early years, fueled by strong merchandise and ticket sales, but by the early 2000s started to lose money, despite an appearance in the Stanley Cup finals. On this day in 2005 the Mighty Ducks were officially sold to billionaire Henry Samueli and his wife, Susan. In 2006, Henry announced that he was changing the name to the Anaheim Ducks, as they are known today, and the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim would be named Honda Center.
