Composer Carl Stalling was originally brought in to score the early Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts, and it was he who suggested to Walt that there be a second cartoon series that would be based on musical themes, each with a different cast of characters. Thus, the Silly Symphony was born with the rib-tickling featurette The Skeleton Dance as its first installment. Ub Iwerks had been with Walt Disney animating films even before Mickey Mouse, oftentimes animating solely. Ub left Disney to open his own animation studio, and it was on this day in 1930 that Carl left Disney to work for him. Carl went on to have a successful career and is probably best remembered for his work at Warner Bros., scoring Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies.
