In 1941’s A Good Time for a Dime, Donald Duck proves that money can’t buy happiness. In fact, a few little coins turn out to be the source of much misery when Donald visits a penny arcade. (Perhaps he would have had more luck at Disneyland’s penny arcade, but that was still a decade and a half away!) Like Disneyland, this penny arcade has a variety of penny peep show machines to choose from, and Donald pops a penny in one featuring the risqué “Dance of the Seven Veils,” only to have technical difficulties after the fifth veil. The short concludes with Donald’s problems aboard a coin-operated airplane ride with a control lever similar to the Disney Parks’ Dumbo and Astro Orbiter attractions. Undoubtedly, if Disneyland existed at the time, Donald would have had a much better experience.
