Disney Legends in Conversation: Exclusive Q&A with Joe Rohde

By Zach Johnson

To cap off an unforgettable weekend, D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event presented by Visa® will conclude on Sunday, August 11, with the Disney Legends Awards Ceremony. The Disney Legends Award honors artists and visionaries throughout The Walt Disney Company’s history who have pushed the envelope of creativity, challenged conventional wisdom, and broken the restraints of the status quo in search of new possibilities and excellence. A 37-year tradition, this year’s honorees include Colleen Atwood, Angela Bassett, Martha Blanding, James L. Brooks, James Cameron, Jamie Lee Curtis, Miley Cyrus, Steve Ditko, Harrison Ford, Mark Henn, Frank Oz, Kelly Ripa, Joe Rohde, and John Williams.

In an exclusive Q&A, Joe Rohde—who is being recognized in the Imagineering category—reflects on his contributions to the company and what it means to be named a Disney Legend.

How does it feel to be honored as a Disney Legend?

Frankly, it was an unexpected honor. All the work we do is done by teams and I always thought of myself as part of a team—kind of the like the team editor. So, it wasn’t top of mind that I was going to be honored in any way. But it is humbling and delightful at the same time to be thought of as an integral part of the history of The Walt Disney Company.

There’d be no Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park without you. Where did the inspiration for that park come from, and how did you turn that dream into a reality?

I think it’s a bit of an overstatement to say that there would be no Disney’s Animal Kingdom without me. It was Michael Eisner‘s idea, and from day one I worked with partners to see it come to life. I think the part that I can take credit for is that I was the chief spokesperson and negotiator for the project, the one who had to do the talking not only to explain it but to enlist supporters, advocates, and advisors.

The day to day of getting Disney’s Animal Kingdom done was a combination of intensive research to support the realism of the park and to learn the rules of the zoological and conservation world. [It required] some invention to create the newer elements, like the Tree of Life and animal habitats, and redirect the design and production skills of Imagineering towards a style that was less fantasy and more photorealistic.

Here is something that was important about the development of the park and that had impact on the rest of my career. We had to overcome two hurdles. One was that people thought they already knew what it would be—just a big zoo—and that this would not work. We needed to reboot that thinking. And more than that, even if we convinced people it could be a theme park, we still needed to contradict many of the rules that made theme parks work.

So, once people understood that it might be something different, the problem was to prove that it was feasible. More than showing that it could be exciting, our chief challenge was proving that it could be done.

That experience bred into me and my teams a strong bias towards presenting all projects not so much as exciting opportunities that might be possible, but as rational investments that were possible and were also exciting… but doable first. Sort of a reduced focus on pure Blue Sky and more like trying to outsmart the analysis so that a proposal could be both rational and surprising at any given moment. Less “Wouldn’t it be cool if…” and more “This makes perfect sense andit’s amazingly cool.”

You were also behind two of the theme park’s most popular expansions with Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain and Pandora – The World of Avatar. What are some of your fondest memories of working on those two projects?

It’s no secret to those who know me that I love the Himalayas. I’ve been there many times, and would go back in a heartbeat, so working on Expedition Everest was a particularly personal joy. It’s common with projects that some of my fondest memories are from the moments right before we open when the project is nearly complete; [it’s] an entire world unto itself, but not yet up and running, so you can wander through it wandering through your imagination. Everest was like that. Almost every space in that attraction is stunningly realistic, so walking around in it is like walking around in my memory of being in the Himalayas.

One thing that nobody gets to do, and was a great memory, was to be inside the structural interior of the mountain while it was running. It’s a forest of gigantic pieces of steel—massive steel ride track columns and spiderwebs of architectural steel, like some science fiction cathedral. In a way it’s too bad guests can’t see that, because it’s very impressive. Of course, traveling to the Himalayas with the team research trips and on our conservation expedition, Mission Himalayas, was one of the great adventures of my life, from the moment we threw our duffel bags out of a hovering helicopter along the Kali Gandaki River and jumped out onto them to be met by a horse team taking us into the fortified town of Kagbeni, it was my dream come true.

Pandora was another thing altogether. I was terrified of this project when it began, and certain that it would be the disastrous end of my career. It’s a matter of public record that I wrote multiple memos to the company advising them not to acquire the property because it was so impossible to build out of real material in the real world. Then, of course, we had to do it.

It ended up being one of my favorite projects. I very much enjoyed working with the irreplaceable Jon Landau, whom I will miss terribly, and had wonderful long conversations with [Disney Legend] James Cameron, often about stuff that had nothing to do with the project at all—just history, science, and nature.

I have several great memories here. One of them was the day we realized that the robotic shaman figure was capable of a deeper and more convincing psychological performance than we had realized. That led us to redevelop the entire script to take advantage of the remarkable performance quality of this figure. The other moment was one day in the simulator building, long before completion of the attraction, that we realized that Avatar Flight of Passage was going to be a more emotional experience than we had imagined and that we might have something here that was a real game changer, far above the technical achievement of getting it done—something like a real work of art. And lastly, as always, those days before we opened when I could wander around the landscape of Pandora as if it was a real national park of some kind, forgetting that it was all of us who had made it so.

You were instrumental in creating the Disney Conservation Fund, which launched in 1996. How did it come to be, and what are some of your proudest accomplishments?

The Disney Conservation Fund came into existence because it simply had to come into existence if we expected to ever build Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It started as a kind of logical and inevitable proposition: If we wanted to have a legitimate venue that held live wild animals, we would have to be part of a broader national and global effort to protect and conserve those animals, and that would involve creating a conservation fund. This was made clear to us by one of our first advisors, Dr. William Conway, and from the moment that it was clear I closed literally every single executive review with the same caveat, that none of this was possible unless we formed a conservation organization. Once I had acquired some internal advocates, like Judson Green, it became easier to advance the cause.

Well before the park opened, we began forming the actual organization. We wanted to disburse lots of smaller allocations, but mainly to field applications where the funds would go the most good. That is still the case having now given out over $125 million to conservation causes around the world.

You retired as portfolio executive in 2021 after 40 years at Walt Disney Imagineering. Given your varied contributions, how do you want to be remembered?

Most of my career was occupied with projects that did not touch upon fantasy or animated characters. Even before Disney’s Animal Kingdom, my work tended to be focused on exploration of what else Disney could mean. Pleasure Island and The Adventurers Club were just part of years of work on urban entertainment centers. Disney’s Animal Kingdom was an experiment expanding what a theme park could be. [Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa] was a collaboration with indigenous Hawaiians. Les Villages Nature Paris was a sustainable eco resort. There’s just not a lot of classic IP in my portfolio. If I have a legacy, I suppose it is that… to leave a body of work that shows just how much more and how much else Imagineers are capable of.

And further, I hope that I have established a sense of discipline, deep study, and gravitas to the work. Over the years I have come to believe that what we do is far and away the most complex and technically sophisticated art form in the world. No film, no opera, no theatrical or architectural enterprise comes close. It deserves intellectual sophistication that is equal to its technical sophistication.

Marvel-Inspired Experiences Coming to Disney Destiny in November 2025

By Zach Johnson

Like Loki, the next Disney Cruise Line ship is destined for glorious purpose.

When the Disney Destiny sets sail, the heroes and villains-inspired ship will offer unique opportunities for families to interact with famed characters and stories from the Marvel Universe with all-new spaces and experiences.

A voyage aboard the Disney Destiny will embrace the dynamic duality of every great Disney story, where opposing forces of light and dark drive characters to rise to their destinies. A diverse range of Marvel characters will serve as the inspiration behind themed venues and entertainment aboard the ship, including a Grand Hall inspired by the rich lore, distinctive iconography and vibrant palette of Marvel Studios’ Black Panther films; a centrally located entertainment parlor inspired by the powerful sorcerers and mystical artifacts of Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange; and a tower suite honoring the legacy of Iron Man.

“The heroes and villains theme of the Disney Destiny provides the perfect platform for us to collaborate with Disney Cruise Line on all-new, Marvel-inspired experiences guests won’t find anywhere else on land or at sea across the Multiverse,” said Brian Crosby, executive, Marvel Experiences Development. “We’re honoring some of our classic heroes like Black Panther and Spider-Man on board, and we’re celebrating the larger-than-life personalities of the Avengers as inspiration for one-of-a-kind venues. This will be a must-do for all True Believers!”

An artist rendering of the Disney Destiny Grand Hall depicts a statue of T’Challa, the Black Panther, next to a black panther. The statue is located in front of a large staircase.

Living a Legend – Wakanda Forever

The Grand Hall of the Disney Destiny will be its most striking and prominent gathering space, a mythical realm that welcomes guests to a world of epic dualities: heroes and villains, adventure, and relaxation. Inspired by the rich lore, distinctive iconography and vibrant palette of Marvel Studios’ Black Panther films, the Grand Hall will be Disney Cruise Line’s kingdom on the seas.

The Walt Disney Imagineering design team consulted with the costume team from the Black Panther movies, and those insights helped fashion the creative vision for this space, including metalwork on the pillars inspired by the banded armor and stacked jewelry found in Wakanda. A breathtaking light fixture inspired by Vibranium—the rare metallic ore found in Wakanda—will generate show-stopping effects that fill the room with life and color.

Presiding over the Grand Hall will be a statue of T’Challa, the Black Panther: King of Wakanda, devoted son, and beloved brother sworn to protect not only his kingdom but the Disney Destiny.

The transformative Grand Hall will be a living theater where heroes and villains from across the Disney universe take center stage and interact with guests in thrilling ways. Complete with a dazzling stage and 360-degree lighting effects, this kinetic environment will come to life throughout every voyage with immersive shows and interactive programming featuring favorite characters from Disney, Marvel, and beyond.

Just off the Grand Hall on decks four and five, guests will write their own vacation legends at Saga, a central hub for daytime family activities and adult-exclusive evening entertainment. The two-story, state-of-the-art venue will host a variety of interactive shows and events in an elevated environment that also takes cues from the architecture of Wakanda. Charged with an electric atmosphere of possibility, Saga will be the more dramatic counterpart to the ethereal Grand Hall.

Supreme Location, Strange Libations

The Sanctum will be Disney Cruise Line’s first lounge inspired by the powerful sorcerers and mystical artifacts of Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange. The centrally located entertainment parlor will host a variety of activities throughout the voyage, offering guests a magical array of cocktails, spirits, and coffees.

Like all Sanctums, this venue will contain mystical items designed to aid sorcerers in protecting the world. Guests will discover unique surprises from Doctor Strange’s New York Sanctum, including a circular mirror behind the bar that evokes the building’s iconic window.

An artist rendering of the Disney Destiny at sea depicts the sun on the horizon.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Ship Decorator?

For the first time in Disney Cruise Line history, a Marvel Super Hero will be the signature stern character on the Disney Destiny—a hallmark design feature that represents the theme and personality of each Disney ship. The larger-than-life sculpture will showcase Spider-Man and his Spider-Bots, who are making a well-meant (if a bit haphazard) attempt at decorating the filigree on the back of the ship.

An artist rendering of the Disney Destiny’s Destiny Tower Suite depicts midcentury modern furniture, lighting fixtures, and décor. Inspired by Iron Man, the color palette is red, gray, white, and gold, and the industrial materials include leather and wood.

Tony Stark-Approved Luxury

In true Iron Man style, the Destiny Tower Suite will literally take the Disney Destiny motif to new heights. This Marvel-inspired penthouse will honor Iron Man’s mighty legacy with a luxurious take on the sleek, industrial designs of genius, billionaire, philanthropist Tony Stark. In the Destiny Tower Suite, armor-like materials and mechanical elements will be balanced by soft, inviting finishes to create an opulent experience exclusive to the Disney Destiny.

Set high in the ship’s forward funnel, the one-of-a-kind Destiny Tower Suite will offer incredible views of the top deck and beyond through an expansive two-story window. With nearly 2,000 square feet of living space, it will comfortably sleep eight guests and feature designated areas for eating, sleeping, and playing, as well as other perks such as a full kitchen and private ensuite elevator.

Guests staying in the Destiny Tower Suite and all concierge-level accommodations guests will receive a premium level of dedicated service and access to exclusive areas and amenities, including the Concierge Lounge and private sun deck. The lounge will be outfitted with fanciful art pieces that celebrate the Avengers, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, inspired by the sophisticated styling of their home base in Manhattan. This hero-worthy retreat will be the perfect place to relax, sip a cocktail, and enjoy complimentary food and beverages throughout the day.

At Marvel Super Hero Academy in Disney’s Oceaneer Club, Spider-Man demonstrates how to shoot webs from his wrists as five children gather around the stage.

It’s Time to Save the Galaxy (Again)

The Disney Destiny will also feature two guest-favorite experiences from the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure, inspired by the characters and stories of the Marvel Universe.

Worlds of Marvel, Disney Cruise Line’s Marvel-themed dining experience, will host guests for an out-of-this-world celebration starring the lively duo of Rocket and Groot from the blockbuster Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy  films. During a tribute to the many Super Heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe who keep the world safe, Groot will take over the proceedings and bring the festivities to the next level like only he can, organizing the ultimate surprise party for his friend Rocket—just in time for dessert. The story will unfold on-screen as guests eat to the beat of an “awesome mix” of hit songs and test their knowledge of the Marvel Universe with trivia and activities for the whole family.

In Disney’s Oceaneer Club, kids ages 3 to 10 will become the heroes of their own epic Disney adventures at Marvel Super Hero Academy, a high-tech Avengers headquarters where young “recruits” are trained to be the next generation of Super Heroes alongside some of their favorite Avengers.

The Disney Destiny will sail an inaugural season of four- and five-night cruises to The Bahamas and Western Caribbean from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, starting in November 2025. Bookings open to the general public Thursday, September 12, 2024.

Disney Cruise Line Goes Bold, Brilliant, Bad—and a Little Bit Mad—for New Heroes and Villains-Inspired Disney Destiny Ship

By Zach Johnson

When Disney, Pixar, and Marvel heroes and villains meet, that’s where the magic happens. And today, Disney Cruise Line shared new details about the Disney Destiny, its new heroes and villains-inspired ship where guests will discover spaces and experiences inspired by legendary schemers, scoundrels, and specters—and some fearsome Disney villains—at sea.

A voyage aboard the Disney Destiny will embrace the dynamic duality of every great Disney story, where opposing forces of light and dark drive characters to rise to their destinies. A diverse range of Disney, Pixar, and Marvel characters serve as the inspiration behind themed venues and entertainment aboard the ship, including new lounges celebrating Cruella de Vil and the Pirates of the Caribbean. Additional exciting offerings coming to the Disney Destiny will be announced Thursday on the Disney Parks Blog and disneycruise.com.

“The Disney Destiny is all about celebrating the bold, charismatic, and driven characters at the heart of our favorite stories,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager, Disney Cruise Line. “And who are our beloved heroes without the antagonists who challenge them to prevail? We want our guests to have fun with the unique theme of this ship, and we are having a blast creating spaces and entertainment experiences that pay tribute to the villains, anti-heroes, and mischief makers who have captivated Disney film and theme park audiences for generations.”

An artist rendering of De Vil's piano lounge aboard the Disney Destiny shows a waiter wearing a white shirt, red vest, black pants, and a black tie carrying a tray of red and blue cocktails. A pianist is playing a spotted piano, and an illuminated silhouette of Cruella de Vil appears behind him. Throughout the bar, the guests sit in red, white, and black chairs.

deVilish Delights

The Disney Destiny was such a wholesome place until… Cruella, Cruella de Vil!

An evening at De Vil’s piano lounge will no doubt be a lavish affair befitting of the bar’s namesake, the fabulously over-the-top villain from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961) and Walt Disney Studios’ live-action Cruella (2021).

Cruella’s infamous flair for style and wickedly bold attitude will be reflected in the Hollywood Regency-inspired aesthetic of the adult-exclusive lounge, which will be adorned in her signature color palette: red, black, and white. Amid sultry tunes from the spotted piano, guests will wind down in style with trendy martinis, chic cocktails, and glamorous wines and bubblies.

One side of De Vil’s piano lounge will be open to the Grand Hall, allowing guests to sit back with a drink and a prime view of the ship’s premier gathering space. Whether patrons choose to bask in Cruella’s legacy or savor the energy and entertainment of the Grand Hall, their experience at this one-of-a-kind lounge will be anything but “miserable, darling.”

“Drink Up, Me Hearties, Yo Ho”

Ahoy, mateys! At Cask and Cannon, guests will join the ranks of the Pirates of the Caribbean for an evening of revelry, recreation, and—of course—rum. Inspired by the iconic characters and scenes from the beloved Disney Parks attractions around the world, the Cask and Cannon pub will be an eclectic yet cozy watering hole furnished with treasures “acquired” (read: pillaged and pilfered) during the pirates’ many voyages around the globe.

At Cask and Cannon, visiting buccaneers will regale one another with tales of their own high seas’ adventures; cheer and jeer during live televised sporting events; and indulge in an extensive menu of rare, specialty, and vintage rums and a selection of “bootlegged” brews developed specially for the venue and served straight from the barrel (in true pirate style).

The AquaMouse logo appears above Chernabog. He is hovering above a smiling Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, who have ascended Bald Mountain and are now singing.

“We Dare Not Stop or Waste a Drop”

The Disney Destiny will introduce a quirky storyline filled with Disney Animation villains to AquaMouse, Disney Cruise Line’s signature attraction at sea—a 760-foot-long water ride towering over the upper decks of the ship. Featuring an original soundtrack written exclusively for Disney Cruise Line by Emmy® Award-winning composer Christopher Willis and lyricist Elyse Willis, the new show will exemplify the signature silliness of Mickey Mouse animated shorts.

In “Sing a Silly Song,” Mickey and Minnie will lead guests on a seemingly ominous trek to the peak of Villain Mountain. When faced with some of the most fearsome villains of Disney Animation lore, the duo will employ a silly song—and a bit of pixie dust—to transform each chilling encounter into a wacky surprise. Guests will laugh and splash along as Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, Scar from The Lion King, Chernabog from Fantasia, and other characters find themselves in unconventionally hilarious situations.

“Sing a Silly Song” will be one of four shows available on AquaMouse aboard the Disney Destiny, all of which combine music, lighting, special effects, and splash-tacular surprises.

“Be Prepared”

Both heroes and villains from across the Disney universe will take center stage aboard the Disney Destiny. Guests will encounter formidable foes—including Maleficent, Hades, Cruella de Vil, Captain Hook, Mr. Smee, and Oogie Boogie—through a variety of shows, meet-and-greets, and special appearances throughout the ship, along with some of Disney’s most mischievous and misunderstood personalities, like Captain Jack Sparrow, Bruno, and Loki.

The Disney Destiny will also introduce exclusive ways for guests to interact with their favorite villains, rogues, and mischief makers through all-new events and activities. This will complement a host of popular programs from across the Disney Cruise Line fleet, including a frighteningly fun dance party in Oogie Boogie’s shipboard lair and an interactive Disney trivia event that often gets interrupted by a cast of Disney villains.

An artist rendering of the Haunted Mansion Parlor shows a dimly lit pub. Behind the well-stocked bar is a mirror in which the three Grim-Grinning Ghosts have materialized, mounted on the iconic purple, black, and white Haunted Mansion wallpaper. Two chandeliers are hanging on the ceiling above back-to-back burgundy leather sofas, an ornate rug, a marble coffee table, and green velvet chairs. A fireplace is illuminated green.

“Happy Haunts Materialize”

Foolish mortals will be welcomed to sip spirited craft cocktails among the 999 happy haunts of Disney Parks lore at the Haunted Mansion Parlor. Reminiscent of a first-class drawing room from the classic cruise liners of the golden age, this experience—which will debut aboard the Disney Treasure in December 2024—will invoke inspiration from the original theme park attraction with a nautical twist exclusive to Disney Cruise Line.

The venue will follow the nostalgic art style of the 1969 Disney Parks classic, blending humor with Disney’s distinct brand of spooky storytelling. Legendary characters from Haunted Mansion attractions around the world will come out to socialize in mysterious ways throughout the experience, along with a few new seafaring arrivals and an original storyline focused on a ship captain. A custom musical arrangement inspired by the attraction’s original score will set the stage for an ever-escalating anthology of illusions that immerses guests into the next chapter of Haunted Mansion lore.

At the Haunted Mansion Parlor, grim grinning guests will sample a selection of ghostly cocktails that capture the spirit of the story, and an exclusive array of haunted homewares and spooky souvenirs inspired by the bar will materialize in shopping venues aboard the ship.

Disney Destiny Cruise Ship Will Include a Lion King-Themed Restaurant, an Incredibles-Themed Sweet Shop, and More Hero-Worthy Features

Legendary cruise vacations are on the horizon for guests aboard the Disney Destiny, Disney Cruise Line’s new heroes-and-villains-inspired ship, setting sail in late 2025 from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

As our friends at the Disney Parks Blog announced this morning, a voyage aboard the Disney Destiny will embrace the dynamic duality of every great Disney story, where opposing forces of light and dark drive characters to rise to their destinies. A diverse range of Disney, Pixar, and Marvel characters will be the inspiration behind themed venues and entertainment aboard the ship, including a first-of-its-kind dining experience inspired by the unforgettable music of The Lion King, an exclusive confectionary themed to The Incredibles, and hero-worthy staterooms and concierge accommodations. Even more new offerings coming to the Disney Destiny will be announced in the coming days—so stay tuned!

“For the Disney Destiny, we will introduce brand-new cruise experiences inspired by the legends and legacies of some of Disney’s most iconic heroes and villains,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager, Disney Cruise Line. “From the dining rooms to the staterooms and everywhere in between, guests aboard our new ship will be surrounded by extraordinary storytelling paired with the signature service and family-fun adventures that are hallmarks of a Disney Cruise vacation.”

The “Mane” Event – A Feast for the Senses

Be prepared… for the iconic songs and legendary moments of The Lion King to come to life at Pride Lands: Feast of The Lion King! The first-of-its-kind dining experience celebrates the renowned music of the Walt Disney Animation Studios film that continues to transcend generations.

The savanna-inspired venue will bring unique depictions of animals and nature to life through lighting and special effects, while the window-lined back wall will transform from stunning sunrises to enchanting sunsets throughout the meal.

As guests dine, a colorful ensemble of live musicians and storytellers will take the stage in the center of the restaurant—complete with tiered risers that evoke African drums—as they present a musical journey through the award-winning soundtrack. Featured songs include “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata,” plus a mash-up of “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” and “Be Prepared”—a fun take that highlights the hero-villain dynamic of the story.

A uniquely themed menu will underscore beloved music during this soulful celebration of family and Simba’s journey to embrace his destiny.

It’s a Sweet Shop, Darling

No capes—just sweets! Edna Mode’s lab, where the famed fashion designer from Pixar Animation Studios’ The Incredibles films whips up outfits for the world’s most famous Supers, will be transformed into a one-of-a-kind confectionary at the brand-new Edna Á La Mode Sweets aboard the Disney Destiny.

Inspired by the Auntie Edna short film, the lab’s modern sewing equipment will be repurposed as sweet-making mechanisms meant to entertain Jack-Jack, the unpredictable and hilariously unstable super baby. The results: a marvelous selection of handmade gelato, ice cream, cookies, candies, and specialty treats served among the lab’s bolts of fabric, costume models, and picture-perfect sculptures of both Edna and Jack-Jack—one hard at work, one hungry for “num nums.”

Fuel for Heroic Feats

Just off the Grand Hall—the central hub and gathering space on the Disney Destiny—two casual walk-up cafes will serve a mighty selection of coffee, tea, specialty beverages, and snacks.

No chance, no way we’ll miss an opportunity to visit Café Megara, named for the witty and independent heroine of Disney Animation’s Hercules. Café Megara will pay homage to the film’s ancient world of Greek gods and legendary heroes. With a unique “Greco disco” design, the vibrant space will be filled with the lightning bolts and clouds of Mount Olympus, vases featuring the Muses, nods to Pegasus, and waves on the ceiling.

Café Merida will be inspired by the flame-haired heroine of Pixar’s Brave, with a Celtic-centered design that invokes her family’s Scottish Highlands heritage. Special touches include a tapestry hung from a mounted bow, while glowing lights above the bar will pay tribute to the will-o’-the-wisps—ethereal blue flames that lead travelers to their destiny.

Hero-Worthy Retreats

With luxurious accommodations that embrace the duality in every great story, a hero’s welcome will be waiting for guests aboard the Disney Destiny. Each stateroom will showcase custom artwork depicting the epic journeys of famous Disney legends, evoking a sense of awe and inspiration as families rest, reconnect, and dream of far-off places.

Like every Disney Cruise Line ship, the Disney Destiny will offer spacious, comfortable, and functional staterooms that uniquely meet the needs of families. Most staterooms will feature Disney Cruise Line’s signature split-bath concept, and many will offer the option of a connecting door that adjoins staterooms to accommodate larger groups.

Concierge guests aboard the Disney Destiny will receive a premium level of dedicated service and access to exclusive areas and amenities throughout their voyage, including a concierge lounge and private sun deck.

Large, lavishly appointed concierge staterooms and suites will draw guests into the enigmatic world of Disney Animation’s Fantasia through elegant, watercolor-style artwork illustrating the rich color palette, otherworldly spectacle, and dynamic duality of the classic film. Seven special oceanview rooms located directly above the bridge and adorned in the distinctive iconography of Pixar’s The Incredibles will provide awe-inspiring, floor-to-ceiling views.

An artist’s rendering of the Hercules-inspired Royal Suite aboard the Disney Destiny features a blue, cream, white, and gold color scheme. A mural of Hades appears on an opposing wall, and a vanity with a rounded mirror is located to the right side of the bed.

In four royal suites of heroic proportions, epic stories will empower guests to embrace their own destinies. Celebrating the majestic powers and noble heroism at the heart of Disney Animation’s Hercules, the Hero Suites will be inspired by Greco-Roman architecture, colors, and patterns. The boldly themed IncrediSuites will invoke the exhilarating exploits of The Incredibles through a streamlined mid-century modern aesthetic inspired by the Pixar films.

A Ship Destined for Greatness

The Disney Destiny will be approximately 144,000 gross tons and powered by liquefied natural gas. Its delivery is part of a multi-year expansion of the Disney Cruise Line fleet that includes the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure; the Disney Adventure that will homeport in Singapore; the recently announced agreement with Disney and Oriental Land Co., Ltd. (OLC) to bring Disney cruise vacations to Japan in 2029; and a new island destination in The Bahamas: Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Marvel Studios Announces the Return of Robert Downey Jr. in Avengers: Doomsday Among Other San Diego Comic-Con Highlights

By Zach Johnson

Marvel Studios returned to Hall H Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), giving fans a first look at what's next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)—including huge news about Marvel Studios' next two Avengers films, including the return of Disney Legend Robert Downey Jr. in a new role as Doctor Doom.

Flanked by others dressed as Doctor Doom, Downey unmasked himself onstage at the end of the presentation. "New mask, same task," said the Academy Award® winner, last seen in the MCU as Tony Stark/Iron Man. "What can I tell you? I like playing complicated character."

A massive choir wearing red and yellow robes sings onstage at San Diego Comic-Con. The Deadpool & Wolverine logo is displayed on a giant screen behind them.

Deadpool & Wolverine
The Hall H showcase kicked off with a celebration of Deadpool & Wolverine. A choral performance of Madonna's "Like a Prayer" welcomed the crowd with dancing Deadpool variants, which ended when Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige looked for Peterpool amongst the variants and called Rob Delaney, who stars in the film as Peter, to the stage.

Delaney joined Feige as the showcase's MC, mentioning the surprise Deadpool & Wolverine screening for SDCC fans Thursday, and the massive drone and fireworks show over San Diego's Petco Park that followed. Deadpool & Wolverinehas already broken box office records for an R-rated theatrical release, and the film's opening officially pushed the MCU over the $30 billion box office mark with 34 movies. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, and directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in theaters.

Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford FaceTime onstage at San Diego Comic-Con.

Captain America: Brave New World
With Sam Wilson about to make his big screen debut as Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World, Delaney welcomed to the stage star Anthony Mackie. Joining them were Tim Blake Nelson, Danny Ramirez, and Giancarlo Esposito, who confirmed he is playing Sidewinder. Together, they revealed exclusive footage and invited Disney Legend Harrison Ford to take the stage. Ford makes his MCU debut as President Thaddeus Ross.

Releasing in theaters on February 14, 2025, Captain America: Brave New World follows Sam Wilson, who after meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, finds himself in the middle of an international incident. Sam must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.

Thunderbolts*
Highlighting Thunderbolts*, Delaney welcomed director Jake Schreier to the stage alongside stars Geraldine Viswanathan, Lewis Pullman, Hannah John-Kamen, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and David Harbour. The latter showed up in full Red Guardian garb, earning laughs and applause from the crowd, who were treated to a scene from the movie.

Marvel Studios (and a crew of indie veterans who definitely sold out) present Thunderbolts*, an irreverent team-up featuring depressed assassin Yelena Belova alongside the MCU's least anticipated band of misfits.

Thunderbolts* also stars Olga Kurylenko and opens in theaters on May 2, 2025.

The blue Fantasticar flies overhead as Rob Delaney, Matt Shakman, Kevin Feige, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Vanessa Kirby,. and Pedro Pascal line up onstage at San Diego Comic-Con.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Feige returned to the stage to share details of the upcoming The Fantastic Four, which begins production Tuesday. Joining Feige on stage were director Matt Shakman and Marvel's first family together onstage for the first time: Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/The Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/Thing). They all shared some cosmic details about the upcoming feature film that sees Galactus and Silver Surfer target Earth for destruction—and revealed the movie's full title: The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

"We're doing a retro-future '60s. [Industrialist] Syd Mead was an inspiration. The '60s, to me, is all about optimism," Shakman told fans in Hall H, adding, "I love the Fantastic Four. I love their power set. We want to be true to the comics, but we want to be true to life."

Hall H was then overtaken by none other than the Fantasticar soaring over the crowd, drawing massive cheers as the screens were taken over by a retro-futurist vision of New York City. Featuring music by Oscar®-winning composer Michael Giacchino, Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released in theaters on July 25, 2025.

Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, and Kevin Feige appear onstage at San Diego Comic-Con. Behind them, the brand-new Avengers: Secret War logo is displayed on a giant screen.

Avengers
Just when the audience thought the showcase was over, Feige announced he had another update: Anthony and Joe Russo, the team behind four of the most successful MCU movies and the studio's highest-grossing directors with over $6 billion in global earnings, will return to helm Avengers: Doomsday in May 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in May 2027.

But who could possibly play Doctor Doom?

"If we’re gonna bring Victor Von Doom to movie theaters worldwide, then I think we're going to need the greatest actor in the world to play that character," Joe said. "As proof of the unimaginable possibilities in the Marvel multiverse, we give you the one person who could play Victor Von Doom."

Robed figures dressed in Doctor Doom masks took the stage and then parted so that Downey could reveal himself. Hall H erupted in thunderous applause, chanting "RDJ!"

The Russos' company, AGBO, is set to produce both films alongside Marvel Studios. Stephen McFeely, known for his work on the Captain America trilogy and Avengers: Endgame, will handle the script.

"Being able to create stories and explore characters within the Marvel Universe fulfilled a life-long dream of ours, and we discovered a powerful connection with audiences in each film that we made," the Russo brothers said. "We're thrilled to collaborate once again with Kevin, Lou and the entire Marvel team to bring this epic adventure in storytelling to new and surprising places for both the fans and ourselves."

By Zach Johnson

We’ve got our eye on Daniel Diemer!

Today, in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, Rick Riordan and Disney+ announced that Diemer will star as the cyclops Tyson in Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. He joins Walker Scobell (Percy Jackson), Leah Sava Jeffries (Annabeth Chase), and Aryan Simhadri (Grover Underwood) as a series regular. The Disney+ Original series from Disney Branded Television and 20th Television will begin filming Season 2 next week in Vancouver.

The upcoming season is based on The Sea of Monsters, the second installment in Disney Hyperion’s best-selling book series by award-winning author Rick Riordan. Set a year after the events of Season 1, it finds Percy Jackson returning to Camp Half-Blood—only to find his world turned upside down. Percy realizes his friendship with Annabeth is changing, he learns he has a cyclops for a brother, Grover has gone missing, and camp is under siege from the forces of Kronos. Percy’s journey to set things right will take him off the map and into the deadly Sea of Monsters, where a secret fate awaits the son of Poseidon.

In a video message for those in attendance at San Diego Comic-Con, Rick Riordan said, “Daniel’s enthusiasm and talent bring a whole new dimension to Tyson, and it’s going to be incredible to see him in the second season. I can’t wait for you guys to meet him and welcome him to the Percy Jackson universe.”

Diemer, who also appeared via a special video message, added, “I am thrilled to step into the extraordinary universe of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I’ve been a fan of the books since I was 10 years old, and it’s a dream come true to be part of this and embark on such an exciting adventure with all the cast and crew—and of course, the passionate fans. I can’t wait to bring Tyson to life and share this journey with you all.”

About Tyson

A young cyclops who grew up all alone on the streets, Tyson finds it difficult to survive in the human world. Shy and awkward, with a heart almost as big as he is, the fan-favorite character discovers that Poseidon is his father, which makes Percy Jackson his half-brother.

About Daniel Diemer

Diemer recently starred in the Hulu limited series Under the Bridge, based off the critically acclaimed book of the same name and a tragic true story of a missing teen girl in Vancouver in 1997. He is a graduate of Victoria Academy of Dramatic Arts in Vancouver.

Created by Rick Riordan and Jonathan E. Steinberg, Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is executive produced by Steinberg and Dan Shotz alongside Rick and Rebecca Riordan; Craig Silverstein; The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, and D.J. Meet Dogpool from Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine

By Zach Johnson

There’s one character who paws-itively steals the show in Deadpool & Wolverine.

In the latest movie from Marvel Studios, Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) suits up as Deadpool and recruits a reluctant Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) to save his home world. Along the way, they meet various variants—chief among them Dogpool, played by Peggy. (Click here to meet more powered-up pals across the MCU, from Goose to Alligator Loki.)

At the film’s global press conference, Reynolds called the mostly bald canine an “incredible” co-star. “Peggy really went from zero to hero on this movie. I’m not kidding! Peggy won the UK’s Ugliest Dog Competition—which, frankly, I think is a cruel contest,” the actor, writer, and producer said. “They’re very kind to the dogs, but Peggy is a real testament.” Like Wade, Dogpool is an “outcast” who “doesn’t look right,” he said. Behind the scenes, head animal trainer Jules Tottman “stepped up and took her from an absolute pain in the ass to the most wonderful actor in this entire film,” he said. “Genuinely, a treat!”

In a scene from Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, Wolverine wears a blue and yellow suit. He grimaces as an unmasked Deadpool, wearing a red and black suit, lifts Dogpool in the air. Dogpool is wearing a red and black suit and her tongue is sticking out.

Reynolds shared a first look at Peggy in costume as Dogpool via his social media accounts in November 2023, joking, “Did Dogpool save the day? Not a chance in gremlin hell. But she IS currently causing the Disney plushy merch department nightmares.” With the highly anticipated film opening in theaters this Friday, writer, director, and producer Shawn Levy predicts fans will go mutts over Dogpool: “I think a lot of people are about to be obsessed.”

Whenever he was filming a scene that involved Peggy (aka Mary Puppins), Reynolds was all about that pug life. “My character, Wade Wilson, falls in love with Peggy—because Peggy is the sort of dog version of me,” he said. “There is a sequence in the film where Peggy and I, well… she explores my mouth using only her leathery, leathery tongue, which honestly looks like a Slim Jim commercial with Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage snapping off.”

Levy interjected, “People have asked me how we did the digital effect of her tongue.”

“Nope,” Reynolds said. “That is the real thing.”

“She has an Instagram account, if anyone’s curious: @dogpool,” he continued. “I’m sure [Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige] paid a lot of money for that. Hashtag ‘worth it!’”

Deadpool & Wolverine is teaming up with Best Friends Animal Society to raise awareness for pets in America’s shelters. There are dogs and cats looking for someone to be their hero. Visit bestfriends.org to adopt a pet near you and meet your “best bub.”
