Celebrate R.J. Decker’s Premiere with These Disney Detectives

By Courtney Potter

In the brand-new series R.J. Decker—premiering March 3 at 10 p.m. PT/ET on ABC and streaming on Hulu—R.J. (Scott Speedman) is a former newspaper photographer and ex-con who starts over as a private investigator in the colorful-if-crime-filled world of South Florida. The series follows him tackling cases that range from slightly odd to outright bizarre with the help of his journalist ex (Adelaide Clemens), her police detective wife (Bevin Bru), and a shadowy woman from his past (Jaina Lee Ortiz) who could be his greatest ally... or his one-way ticket back to prison. Inspired by Carl Hiaasen’s novel Double Whammy, R.J. Decker is produced by 20th Television.

Disney has a long history of colorful detective characters—so before R.J. Decker debuts, we decided to take a spin through a few of our favorite gumshoes, flatfoots, and private eyes. (This is by no means an exhaustive list; make sure to let us know your fave on D23’s social media!)

But following Teddy’s murder—at the hands of an unidentified Toon criminal—Eddie started drowning his sorrows in hooch and letting his hatred of Toons get the best of him. He’s forced back into action, however, after becoming an unsuspecting pawn in a conspiracy involving Roger Rabbit.

Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde (Zootopia, 2016, and Zootopia 2, 2025)

In Zootopia (2016), Judy (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) is an optimistic and ambitious bunny who becomes the first rabbit officer of the Zootopia Police Department. She is bound and determined to make the world a better place—while also breaking all kinds of misconceptions about herself and other animal species. To that end, an opportunity to do just that presents itself when she teams up with charming con artist Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) to solve a case that threatens the city. Later, in Zootopia 2, the duo is swept up in a decades-old mystery that involves Zootopia’s most prominent family, the Lynxleys, as well as the arrival of the first snake (voiced by Ke Huy Quan) to be seen in the animal metropolis for 100 years.

Huey, Dewey, and Louie (DuckTales, 1987 and 2017)

Huey, Dewey, and Louie—Donald Duck's identical triplet nephews—became the protagonists of a 1987 syndicated animated TV series in which they “might solve a mystery... or re-write history!” Along with their great uncle Scrooge McDuck, the nephews dove head-first into globe-spanning escapades of action and d-d-d-danger. Disney XD refreshed the series in 2017, and the personalities of Huey, Dewey, and Louie (voiced by Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz, and Bobby Moynihan, respectively) got a sharp new upgrade.

Morgan Gillory (ABC’s High Potential, 2024)

There are a few other detectives and private eyes on the current ABC roster... including Morgan Gillory (Kaitlin Olson) of High Potential; she’s a single mother of three who worked as a cleaner at the Los Angeles Police Department until her IQ of 160—classifying her as a high-potential intellectual (HPI)—led to her unexpectedly solving a complex case. Ultimately, she’s recruited as a civilian consultant for the LAPD's Major Crimes Division, where she’s partnered with Detective Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), a methodical investigator whose by-the-book approach often clashes with Morgan's unconventional methods.

Will Trent (ABC’s Will Trent, 2023)

Joining Morgan and R.J. on the roster is Will Trent (Ramón Rodríguez), a special agent in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Despite being dyslexic, Will is highly observant, solving the highest proportion of cases in the GBI—which causes a bit of envy amongst his coworkers. Later, he’s assigned a case with the Atlanta Police Department. Will grew up in foster care, and he’s had an on-again, off-again relationship with APD Detective Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen), a childhood friend from the foster system. He also has an adorable dog!
