Something fishy happened on this day in 1962, when part one of Sammy, the Way-Out Seal made its debut on Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color television series. Sammy, the Way-Out Seal tells the tale of two brothers who decide to “harbor” an injured seal they find on vacation, only to learn the valuable lesson that seals, in fact, are not the ideal pet.
Michael McGreevey and Billy Mumy, who play the siblings, each have an impressive list of credits as child actors. Michael would appear in 18 movies and more than 100 television shows, before successfully turning his talents to writing, directing, and producing. Nearly a dozen of his films were for Disney, and he often starred opposite Kurt Russell including roles in The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, Now You See Him, Now You Don’t, Snowball Express, and The Strongest Man in the World.
With equally impressive credits, Billy Mumy has appeared in more than 400 television shows and has appeared in dozens of movies. Today Billy keeps busy acting in television, feature films, doing voice-over work, writing, producing, and is quite involved in music. He is probably best remembered as Will Robinson in the television series Lost in Space. With talents like Michael and Billy, Sammy, the Way-Out Sea-Lion was sure to be entertaining from start to “fin.”
