Passengers on the Columbia Sailing Ship at Disneyland are Allowed Below Decks For the First Time

“Ahoy, shipmates! You have just set sail aboard the proud Columbia, an exact replica of the first American vessel to completely circle the globe.” For many years, this narration was heard on Disneyland’s Columbia Sailing Ship, giving a brief history of the original craft on which it was modeled. From the day the Columbia first set sail at Disneyland on June 14, 1958, guests were able to journey around Tom Sawyer Island; however, beginning on this day in 1964, seafaring passengers were now allowed to explore new regions and, as the narration explained, visit below decks where you may “see how we sailors of the 1790s live and work on the high seas.”
