As families grow, it’s sometimes necessary to move into new homes. That was certainly the case as the Disney family grew. For 14 years, the Disney Studios were located on Hyperion Avenue in the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles. This is where Mickey Mouse was “born” in 1928, as well as Minnie, Donald Duck, Goofy, and a princess named Snow White. With the success of comic shorts and a new genre of entertainment, the animated feature, and many more to come, it was time to move to a bigger home, the new Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. It was on this day in 1939 that the move began (generally, the move is considered to have ended on January 5, 1940). Soon Disney would be producing live-action films and building elements of Disneyland on the very Burbank lot that remains Disney’s headquarters today. Although the studio has expanded over the years with new buildings and the Feature Animation and ABC television buildings just across the street, much of the studio remains unchanged today, with the classic water tower, the trademark campus feel, and the iconic street sign of Mickey Avenue and Dopey Drive.
