Alice Solves the Puzzle, a short animated and live-action film about Alice trying to complete a crossword puzzle, arrived in theaters on this day in 1925. After the heroine of Disney’s short film series takes a short break to swim with her pal, Julius the cat, she comes “across” Bootleg Pete, an evil collector of rare crossword puzzles who tries to pillage her puzzle and chases her to the top of a lighthouse to do so. But, have no fear, it’s Julius to the rescue! In the film, a caption appears as a quote from Margie Gay, who happens to be the young actress portraying Alice: “Little Alice never had a cross word, not even with a puzzle.”
