Hailey’s On It! Introduces the World’s Unlikely Hero

By Andie Hagemann

The fate of the world depends on… a teenager?

The all-new, original animated comedy Hailey’s On It! follows Hailey (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho), a risk-averse but resourceful teenager from Oceanside, California, on a mission to complete every item on her long list of challenging—and oft impractical—tasks in order to save the world. In the process, she is pushed outside of her comfort zone and discovers her true strength and inner greatness.

From performing in a school musical to tackling every ride at the county fair, or facing her complicated, and ever-growing feelings for her best friend Scott (voiced by Manny Jacinto), Hailey is always facing new challenges, and more opportunities to conquer her fears. But she has outgoing Scott and Beta (voiced by Gary Anthony Williams), an artificially intelligent operating system from the future, to lean on and keep her on track.

“[Hailey and Scott] are two opposites that are perfectly aligned for each other,” says Devin Bunje, co-creator and executive producer. “He is the perfect best friend that helps pull her out of her shell, but she’s also there to help him think twice before he does something too crazy.”

Co-creator and executive producer Nick Stanton adds, “We wanted to have the characters grow and change throughout the series. We know she’s going to accomplish great things, but how that journey happens was an interesting question for us [to answer].”

In a scene from Hailey’s On It!, The Professor holds a maroon journal and talks to Hailey, a teenage girl.

Don’t expect Hailey’s “big list” to be chock-full of fantastical situations. Stanton teased an upcoming episode (one of his favorites thus far) where Hailey attempts to throw a “cool party”—one of the goals on her list. “The entire episode is set in Hailey’s backyard,” he says. “When one of the popular girls brings a game, things become tense and using a limited setting [was a fun challenge].”

Bunje adds his favorite moments are when Hailey is a little too boastful after accomplishing a task. “[In one scene], she grabs Scott’s soda can and shoots it like a basketball but misses and it explodes so she jumps on it and stabs it,” he continues with a laugh.

Hailey’s On It! features music from varying genres, from K-pop to musical theater to pop-rock to EDM, some of which inject hilarity into the series’ storytelling. “We wrote the ‘tunnel of love’ song in our original pilot script, and Disney [connected us with] options for composers and songwriters,” recalls Bunje. “Matthew Tishler and Andrew Underberg blew us away with their first take, which ended up in the show.

“Matthew and Andrew have the same comedic timing and [humor] as us,” he continues. “It all just fits perfectly with the tone of the show—a little bit of funny, a lot of heart, and great music overall.”

The series voice cast includes Cooper Andrews as Kai, Hailey’s dad; Julie Bowen as Patricia, Hailey’s mom; Josh Brener as A.C., Hailey’s academic rival; Sarah Chalke as The Professor, a high-energy scientist from the future; Nik Dodani as Thad, Hailey’s classmate; Judy Alice Lee as Becker, Scott’s younger sister; Amanda Leighton as Kristine, the most popular girl in school; Joy Osmanski as Sunny, Scott’s mom; and Nico Santos as Jonathan, Hailey’s classmate.

The star-studded guest cast includes Brian Jordan Alvarez, Blake Anderson, Mick Foley, Jo Koy, Jack McBrayer, Bebe Neuwirth, Chris Parnell, Tim Robinson, Natasha Rothwell, Brandon Mychal Smith, Martin Starr, and Weird Al Yankovic.

Hailey’s On It! premieres Thursday, June 8, at 8 p.m. ET/PT with two episodes on Disney Channel and Disney XD, and is available the next day on Disney+.

Disney Junior’s New Series Pupstruction Explores Life’s Paw-sibilities

By Andie Hagemann

It’s Pupstruction time!

Disney Branded Television’s all-new animated series Pupstruction, geared towards kids ages 2-7, follows the adventures of a doggone hard-working construction crew led by Phinny (voiced by Yonas Kibreab)—an innovative young corgi who dreams up some of the biggest and wildest ideas to help his town of Petsburg.

“Phinny is the smallest on the crew, but he learns that because he has big ideas, he can still accomplish things and find ways to follow his dream,” creator and executive producer Travis Braun tells D23: The Official Disney Fan Club. “It’s not about how big you are but how big you dream, and Phinny demonstrates that in every episode.”

The other members of the Pupstruction crew are Luna (voiced by Mica Zeltzer), a comically spontaneous sheepdog; Roxy (voiced by Scarlett Kate Ferguson), a can-do rottweiler; and Tank (voiced by Carson Minniear), a lovable, snack-obsessed mastiff.

Braun confesses he shares an enormous love for snacks like the character Tank. “Every time I’m in the writers’ room, I’m stopping for a snack, and it’s become a running joke that I have a new snack every 30 minutes,” he recalls with a big laugh. “But the character I relate to the most is Phinny because I was that little kid with big ideas who wanted to create cool things.”

In a scene from the animated series Pupstruction, Phinny, a corgi, wears a construction helmet and looks at a colorful Ferris wheel.

Phinny’s ambitious spirit extends to Roxy, who uses wheels for rear legs. While Pupstruction will highlight the importance of accessibility and inclusion in several episodes, Roxy is not defined by her disability; she’s just a part of the team like everyone else. “We have an amazing voice actor named Scarlett Kate Ferguson, who also uses a wheelchair,” Braun continues. “She does archery and horseback riding, and is so much like her character Roxy.”

He adds, “Roxy is a fun character to write because she has all these layers to her. She loves demolition but also loves tutus and [the color] pink.”

Behind the scenes, the creative team engaged in extensive conversations regarding accessibility in Petsburg: “Construction can be silly and fun—pouring concrete, knocking over walls, and doing demolition—but construction can also build things that make a difference in people’s lives,” Braun says. “One of my favorite episodes is when the pups encounter a staircase leading to the observatory but it’s not accessible for everyone, so they strategize a way to change it.”

The voice cast also features Yvette Nicole Brown as Mayor Gilmore; Bobby Moynihan as Bobby Boots; Grey DeLisle as Maya; Kari Wahlgren as Scratch; Eric Bauza as characters Harry, Sniff, and Lloyd; and Alessandra Perez as Bailey… along with Olga Merediz as Grandma Dee, Todrick Hall as Harvey Hare, Gabriel Iglesias as Felipe, and Nate Torrence as Chameleo.

“I grew up loving Disney, and I’m still a Disney kid today,” shares Braun. “I wanted to make a show that took all those elements I love about Disney, blend it with the feeling of community, and encourage viewers to be playful and silly. We had so much fun making this show and let ourselves be free to play—and I hope people feel that when they watch the show.”

Pupstruction premieres Wednesday, June 14, with a simulcast on Disney Channel and Disney Junior at 8 a.m. ET/PT. Select episodes will be available the same day on Disney+ and on-demand platforms.

12 Disney Characters Who Would Thrive in Element City

By Jessica Benda

Element City is a sizzling, bubbling, breezy metropolis—and on Friday, June 16, we get to meet some of its residents! Disney and Pixar’s Elemental introduces Fire woman Ember and Water guy Wade, representing two often-clashing elements that they find might complement each other instead.

While we’ve yet to meet the whole crew—which also includes characters representing Earth and Air—we can’t help but wonder what other element-based Disney characters might move into Element City. From the lighthearted Air residents to the lush Earth people, these are the characters we think would thrive in Elemental.

In the animated film Luca, two young boys—Luca and Alberto—stand on rocks at the mouth of a seaside cave. The ocean and bright blue sky are behind them, and there is a small pool inside the cave that shows their reflections. They grin.

Luca—Water
Do they have Vespas in Element City? If so, Luca will surely be found there. In the Disney and Pixar film Luca, the titular character is a sea monster who turns into a human while on land. He explores Portorosso but keeps his identity a secret—which is difficult considering one splash of water reveals the scales underneath. He wouldn’t have to hide in Element City, which would welcome their new Water friend with open arms.

Mufasa (Ghost Edition)—Air
Appearing out of the clouds is about as close to Air citizenship as you can get. After Mufasa is tragically killed in The Lion King, he later appears in the sky to deliver some harsh truths to a now-grown Simba. The former king of the Pride Lands might be the new king of Element City.

In the animated film Hercules, the god Hades grips his two minions, Pain and Panic, by their necks. His usual head of blue fire has erupted into orange flames in his anger. He shouts, his sharp teeth prominent under his yellow narrowed eyes.

Hades—Fire
Not only does Hades have the hottest hair in town, but his tendency to burst into flames makes him an honorary Fire person. In Hercules, the flamboyant Lord of the Underworld has rage issues that can pose a fire hazard, but it would be no trouble in Fire Town.

Isabella—Earth
From hanging vines to a hurricane of jacarandas, Isabella’s gift bonds her deeply with the earth in Encanto. She was first confined to sprouting flowers, but as she freed herself from her family’s expectations, she dared to grow carnivorous plants and fantastical trees. She’s an Earth person through and through—and she’d be a fantastic city decorator!

In the animated short Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, snowman Olaf stands on a snowy doorstep. His clasps his branches together in front of him and smiles.

Olaf—Water
If a bout of cold weather came over Element City, you’d probably get Frozen’s lovable snowman Olaf, who at his core is really just chilled water. With his friendly attitude and upbeat smile, Olaf would make an outstanding Water citizen—though his hugs are surely warm enough for a Fire friend!

Vidia—Air
Our favorite fast-flying talent would be the speediest in Element City. The snarky yet sincere Vidia flies through the Tinker Bell series while whipping up tornadoes and spurring on the breeze. With wit as quick as her winds, she’d be an outstanding Air resident.

Anger—Fire
Anger’s rage causes his head to erupt in flames, and considering his name, that happens a lot. In the Disney and Pixar feature Inside Out, Anger is one of five emotions living in Riley’s head, and he’s dedicated solely to bouts of unchecked rage. Luckily, Fire Town is fireproof, so he’d be a perfect friend for Ember and the other Fire people.

A still of baby Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. He is a tiny, tree-like creature with small vines growing around his bark and big brown eyes. He clasps his hands together and looks onward nervously.

Groot—Earth
In the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, Groot—and after Vol 1, the being lovingly known as Baby Groot—are unforgettable team members. Like many Earth people, the Groots are made of bark and branches, and we think the residents of Elemental City could learn a thing or two from Groot’s dance moves.

Ariel—Water
Anyone who breathes H2O is a perfect fit for the Water community. Ariel spent 16 years living under the sea, so her mermaid experience has well equipped her to travel through Element City. She may be a human now, but hey, humans are about 60 percent water anyway!

Gale—Air
As one of the five elemental spirits in the Enchanted Forest, Gale is a helping breeze to Anna and Elsa in Frozen 2, another Disney film that reimagines the four primal elements. This wind spirit is often seen only through rustling leaves and airborne dust, but Gale is certainly felt when a gust tosses you up in the air!

In Thor: Ragnarok, the fire demon Surtur takes up the whole screen. It’s a close-up of his fiery face and yellow glowing eyes. With his fists up, the green Hulk is airborne as he hurtles right toward Surtur’s face.

Surtur—Fire
As the opening and closing act of Thor: Ragnorok, Surtur is an unforgettable Fire person. Thor kills the fire demon in an epic opening sequence, but later resurrects him so he can defeat Hela, Thor’s sadistic sister. While Surtur succeeds at beating Hela, he also mercilessly destroys Asgard, one of the Nine Realms and Thor’s home. That said, maybe we shouldn’t invite Surtur to Element City.

The Flowers—Earth
Alice stumbles upon many fantastical beings in Wonderland, among them a garden of talking flowers. The matronly rose, haughty iris, and playful pansies of Alice in Wonderland could easily be found in Element City (though they clearly wouldn’t take kindly to non-Earth residents).
