EXCLUSIVE: Interview with Disney LEGO Designer Marcos Bessa

By Jocelyn Buhlman

Building LEGO sets is a creatively thrilling hobby—especially building LEGO sets featuring our favorite Disney characters and films! But what if your job was to build LEGO sets? For many, it’s a dream job—but for Marcos Bessa, it’s a dream made reality! Bessa is the mastermind behind the all-new LEGO Disney Villain Icons for the Disney 100th Anniversary set, available now and featuring some of our favorite Disney baddies hidden within familiar icons and items. We chatted with Bessa about this set, cleverly designed with secret compartments and hidden drawers to hold four LEGO minifigures, and what it’s like having one of the coolest jobs around.

LEGO minifigures of the Evil Queen (Old Hag version) from Snow White, Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, and Jafar (Evil Genie version) stand in a row in front of the LEGO Disney Villains set.

D23: What is the coolest part of your job? What is the most surprising part?
Marcos Bessa: The coolest part of my job has to be the fact that I get to be surrounded by LEGO bricks all day, every day, and that they are my main work tool. I get to “work” with LEGO bricks! Can’t beat that! The most surprising part might be the fact that we don’t use computers as much as some people out there think we do to create our designs—it all comes directly from our creative minds, straight into our fingertips!

D23: When did you first realize you had a talent for designing LEGO sets?
MB: Before I got hired as a Designer to work for the LEGO Group, I was building my own LEGO creations—the adult fans called these “MOCs,” as in “My Own Creations”—and whenever I posted them online in specialized forums or competitions, they would often get very positive feedback from the fan community. That contributed to my confidence in my building skills, which led me to apply for the job. Now, designing a LEGO set is very different that building something for myself… But I’ve been doing it for many years already, and every time I read the positive feedback from consumers online—of all ages!—I get this wonderful feeling of mission accomplished!

D23: How did you decide which characters and films were featured? Why focus on villains specifically?
MB: The selection of characters and films that we reference in this LEGO set came down to a joint decision between our LEGO team and the Disney team we collaborate with for the development of our products. As the model designer of this product, I started off with a proposal of what I felt was a good mix of references—based on my personal favorites—and then we took it from there, trying to ensure we had a product in the end that could appeal to as many different LEGO Disney fans out there as possible. The focus on villains came from the interest in offering something different than what we had done so far within the LEGO Disney products. The Disney Villains are a key element of any good movie—there’s no story without them!—and we felt it was about time we recognized the importance of these complex and multilayered characters that we love to hate.

A close-up of the LEGO Disney Villains set, focused on a LEGO version of The Little Mermaid VHS tape, depicting Ursula on the tape art. Next to the VHS are a LEGO poison apple and a LEGO version of the book Beauty and the Beast. The rest of the LEGO set is out of focus.

D23: The design is heavily inspired by ’90s nostalgia. Were any elements of the design pulled from your own experiences?
MB: Certainly! As a ’90s child, growing up with my own collection of VHS tapes of all of these incredible movies—which I played over and over in my VCR—working on this LEGO set was an absolute dream for my inner child!

D23: What kind of testing did you do to ensure your designs for LEGO sets are both fun to build and result in the desired end product?
MB: We have a rigorous process that we take all our new designs through, to ensure they fit our highest quality standards when it comes to delivering an adequate building experience to the age mark we target, but also that the play features—when present—are satisfying and deliver the fun they promise! So, among other things, we get to build and rebuild several iterations of our models, with help from specialized colleagues that evaluate the model from different perspectives.

D23: Which Disney movies or characters do you find the most artistically inspiring?
MB: Growing up, Hercules, Aladdin, and The Lion King were my favorite movies, because of their soundtracks. Now, as a grownup, they still hold a very special place in my heart, but I’ve been going through an Encanto crush lately!

D23: Do you have a favorite memory from your time working at LEGO? A favorite Disney set you’ve designed?
MB: Every day I work on a LEGO Disney product is a new favorite memory—as cheesy as it may sound, it’s really the truth! I get to enjoy two of my most beloved things in the whole world together! But having designed the original 71040 Disney Castle that got us a TOTY award in 2017 has certainly been a highlight in my LEGO career.

Q&A: Discover One of the Minds Behind Cool Disney LEGO Sets

By Jocelyn Buhlman

LEGO and Disney are teaming up to celebrate some of our favorite Disney Duos in all-new sets just in time for the company’s 100th anniversary! Before you start building these besties, we sat down with the designer of these perfect pairings. Designer Illia Gotlib gave us the inside scoop on how LEGO sets are made and how the worlds of Disney inspire his creativity and designs.

D23: The Official Disney Fan Club: What is the coolest part of your job? What is the most surprising part?
Illia Gotlib: My favorite part of the job is creating toys for kids that will inspire storytelling and creativity, much in the same way that LEGO sets did for me when I was a child. The most surprising part was that some of the designers that made my favorite LEGO sets as a kid 30 years ago are still working here—it’s incredibly humbling!

LEGO Designer Illia Gotlib standing in a hallway with shelves of boxed LEGO sets. He is smiling and holding the box for a The Little Mermaid-themed LEGO set featuring Ariel and Prince Eric on a boat.

D23: When did you first realize you had a talent for designing LEGO sets?
IG: I’ve enjoyed building my own creations with LEGO bricks ever since I was a child, but I only realized that designing sets could be a real possibility for me after I started working here as an engineer. I made friends with some of the other designers and many of our evenings the first few years in Denmark were spent just building fun LEGO models together.

D23: Do you have a favorite memory from your time working at LEGO? A favorite Disney set you’ve designed?
IG: I really enjoyed working on 21326 Winnie the Pooh both because it evoked such a strong cozy, nostalgia from those childhood films and stories as well as because it was made through the LEGO Ideas platform. That means that a fan submitted the design and then we worked together with him to bring it to life, which made the product development extra special.

The four LEGO Disney Duo sets, photographed against a white background. The sets include LEGO depictions of Pua and Hei Hei from Moana, Percy and Meeko from Pocahontas, Lumiere and Cogsworth from Beauty and the Beast, and Squirt and Nemo from Finding Nemo.

D23: How did you decide which characters would be featured for the duos?
IG: We had a lot of brainstorms as a team to come up with pairs that could best represent different eras of Disney films, bring variety to the overall Disney100 product lines that we were making as LEGO sets and—of course—be fun to build! Early on we started with some wonderful sketch models of Lumiere and Cogsworth from Ollie Gregory [another designer on the team].

D23: Do you have a favorite pairing or a pairing you relate to the most from the duo sets?
IG: I have vivid memories of watching Beauty and the Beast when I was little, so I’m really happy to include Cogsworth and Lumiere. I was also excited to work on Percy since we have two pugs at home. So it was a happy coincidence to get to build one out of LEGO bricks.

D23: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when designing the sets, and how did you overcome them?
IG: One of the biggest challenges is balance—finding the right balance between the reference in the movies and the LEGO design style. We’re making something recognizable and also buildable by kids, so sometimes it’s finding a new interpretation or way of building something that we’ve already done before.

D23: What advice do you have for any aspiring LEGO design masters reading this interview?
IG: I think the best thing to do is practice building different things—challenge yourself to build something you typically wouldn’t make—that’s a common need in our jobs as LEGO designers. I look at LEGO bricks as an artistic medium, much like drawing or painting, so practice is one of the best ways to improve your skillset. We have designers from all kinds of backgrounds, but Product Design is a path to consider if you’re in university.

Caribbean Curses and Creepy Capuchins: D23 Pin Celebrates 20 Years of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl

By Peyton Liebler

You will always remember this as the day YOU could catch this sinisterly simian pin! In celebration of 20 years of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club is bringing the yo-ho to your pirate life with this exclusive glow-in-the-dark treasure. Made especially for D23 Gold Members, this pin features an eclectic pirate named Jack... and we mean Jack as in the undead monkey “matey” of the Black Pearl, of course!

This pin is, obviously, inspired by the hit 2003 feature Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl—the blockbusting release that smashed box-office records and sparked numerous sequels. The film itself was inspired by the classic Disney Parks attraction Pirates of the Caribbean, and featured countless nods to the beloved watery adventure throughout. In the film, the roguish yet charming Captain Jack Sparrow’s (Disney Legend Johnny Depp) idyllic pirate life capsizes after his nemesis—the wily Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush)—steals his ship, the Black Pearl, and later attacks the town of Port Royal, kidnapping the governor’s beautiful daughter Elizabeth (Keira Knightley). In a gallant attempt to rescue her and recapture the Black Pearl, Elizabeth’s childhood friend Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) joins forces with Captain Jack... what Will doesn’t know is that a cursed treasure has doomed Barbossa and his crew to live forever as the undead.

Animated artwork for D23 Exclusive Pirates of the Caribbean Curse of the Black Pearl 20th anniversary glow-in-the-dark pin. The pin artwork features the rotting ghostly remains of the cursed capuchin monkey Jack, with pale green details on the skeletal fixtures of the monkey and a “20” emblem above a moon at the top of the pin. It also features golden metal details and grey and maroon infill elements on Jack’s tattered clothes. He is framed in a mystical swirl shape. This image displays the pin on top of darkened artwork of the Black Pearl pirate ship, with the logo for the film and the phrase “D23: The Official Disney Fan Club Celebrates 20 Years of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl – Limited Edition 1,000.”

Fall Issue of Disney twenty-three to Honor The Walt Disney Company’s 100-Year Journey

By the D23 Team

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company, the upcoming Fall 2023 issue of Disney twenty-three will take fans on a trip down memory lane in honor of the company’s centennial this October.

The special commemorative issue—a meaningful keepsake as part of the Disney100 celebration—will feature original, exclusive sketch art of Mickey Mouse from artist and the official voice of Mickey Mouse, Bret Iwan. Also in this issue, the CEO of The Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger, shares a letter of gratitude to the passionate fans who inspire Disney to go farther and reach higher.

The new issue, to be delivered directly to Gold Members of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, will include an account from Walt Disney Archives experts on how Walt and Roy Disney defied all expectations to become the founders of the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio in 1923. Fans will read quotes from the brothers themselves as firsthand testimony of their fascinating journey. Plus, take a closer look at the foundation of The Walt Disney Company through one of Walt Disney’s driving principles: innovation. Readers will learn more about the art and science behind the revolutionary technology and techniques that have shaped Disney stories and experiences through the decades.

The commemorative issue will also feature personal stories from Disney Legends Josh Gad and Tracee Ellis Ross, the cast of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and additional talent including Rosario Dawson, star of the upcoming Disney+ show Ahsoka. Then dig a little deeper into the evolution of organized fandom, from the Mickey Mouse Clubs of the 1930s to modern cosplay for Marvel and Star Wars.

Music plays a large part in fans’ connection to Disney stories and experiences, and there is one unparalleled partnership that created the standard for Disney music. Whether floating through a world of laughter in “it’s a small world,” being reminded that “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” in Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress or stepping in time with Bert and Mary in Mary Poppins (1964), brothers Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman were instrumental in creating songs that have captured hearts—and been stuck in heads—for the past 60 years. In this issue, the Disney Legends recount intimate moments in their own words through archival interviews.

Plus, follow beloved stories from page to parks and get a behind-the-scenes look at how the magic-makers at Disney turn drawings, storyboards, and animation into real-life experiences. Later in the issue, dive into the unknown with director Chris Buck and the Frozen design team, as well as producer Mary Livanos of Marvel Studios’ upcoming The Marvels, as they share the inside scoop on how these imaginary worlds are built for the big screen, creating intricate new realms for fans to enjoy across multiple stories.

The new issue, available first to Gold Members of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, also takes a trip down memory lane in an eye-popping parade of 100 characters from all 62 Walt Disney Animation Studios feature films, from 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Wish, coming out this November.

Also in the Fall 2023 issue of Disney twenty-three:

  • Revisit star-studded movie premieres through the years in a unique D Society feature
  • Step up to the plate and discover Disney’s long history of telling stories through sports, from animated Mickey Mouse and Goofy shorts to modern-day ESPN programming
  • Walk in Walt’s footsteps through The Happiest Place on Earth with legendary Walt Disney Imagineer Kim Irvine
  • Take a closer look at the ways The Walt Disney Company has given back to the community, a legacy started by Walt Disney himself
  • Read a special By the Numbers: Disney100 looking back at The Walt Disney Company from 1974–1998—the third in a four-part series

Disney twenty-three is delivered directly to fans’ doorsteps and is offered first to D23 Gold Members as a benefit of their membership. The latest issue will begin arriving before the end of August. Want the publication for yourself? Join D23 here.

(Microwaved) Ginger Scallion Fish From Secret Chef

You don’t need a clothing steamer to make this recipe! Inspired by chef David Chang’s new Hulu competition series, Secret Chef, this steamed fish recipe with Cantonese-style sauce can be made quick and easy in the microwave… perfect for busy weeknights!

While Chang, executive producer of the series, creates this recipe via clothing steamer—see the fun clip below!—he’s shared the modified microwave version with us, below:

INGREDIENTS
2 teaspoons soy sauce
¼ teaspoon agave
½ tablespoon Shaoxing wine (Chinese cooking wine)
½” knob of ginger, peeled, thinly sliced
1 scallion, cut into 1” pieces
2 tablespoons peanut oil
14oz (115g) filet skin-on white fish (bass, halibut, cod, or black cod)

PREPARATION
In an Anyday dish or microwave-safe bowl, combine peanut oil, soy sauce, agave, chicken or vegetable stock, Shaoxing wine, sliced ginger, and scallions and stir gently. Add the fish, skin-side up.

Cover and cook in the microwave at Power Level 5 for 4-5 minutes, or until the fish is just barely cooked through and is tender when poked with a chopstick. Note: The cook time will depend on the thickness of the fish. Please adjust accordingly.

Let it rest for 2 minutes with the lid on to gently continue steaming. Serve with sauce and garnish with more sliced green onions, if desired.

Home ImprovementSeasons 1 through 8 now streaming on Disney+
The classic ABC sitcom, starring Disney Legend Tim Allen, comes to the streaming service. Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor is the star of television’s Tool Time show, but he’s often a bit of a klutz when he tries his home-improvement skills around the house. He’s not always terribly adept in his relationships with his wife and three boys, either. Hijinks—as they so often do—ensue. Patricia Richardson, Zachery Ty Bryan, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Taran Noah Smith, Earl Hindman, and Richard Karn also star.
