Walker Scobell to Play Title Role in Disney+ Series Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Today, Disney+ announced Walker Scobell has been cast in the titular role in the fantastical live action series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The epic adventure is based on—and closely aligned with—Disney Hyperion’s best-selling book series by award-winning author Rick Riordan. The Disney Branded Television series Percy Jackson and the Olympians is produced by 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios, and will go into production this summer.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Now Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus.

Percy is a smart and compassionate kid with a sharp sense of humor. He’s always seen himself as an outsider, in no small part because of how the world sees his ADHD and dyslexia. He’s impulsive and rambunctious and is quick to anger when things seem unfair to him. But beneath his cynicism is an affectionate son and loyal friend who just wants to do right by those he cares about. If only he could find a place where he fits in.

Riordan and Jon Steinberg will serve as writers of the pilot episode, and James Bobin will direct. Steinberg will oversee the series with his producing partner Dan Shotz. Steinberg and Shotz serve as executive producers alongside Bobin, Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke, Monica Owusu-Breen, Jim Rowe, and The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, and D.J. On Wednesday, watch Scrat embrace the ups and downs of fatherhood in the all-new animated shorts, Ice Age: Scrat Tales; later that same day, The Wonder Years’ Bruce surprises his family upon his return from Vietnam. Hulu Original series The Kardashians premieres on Thursday. Then, 20th Century Studios’ The Call of the Wild makes its network debut on Friday!

The first season of the hit comedy concludes with Abbott’s annual field trip to the zoo. After Tariq (Zack Fox) reveals that he’s been offered a job in New York, Janine (Quinta Brunson) mulls over a major life decision. Janine isn’t the only one questioning her future—Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) ponders whether to teach another year after finding out her favorite tuatara has “retired.”

Embark on a thrilling adventure to the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush with 20th Century Studios’ 2020 adaptation of Jack London’s novel, The Call of the Wild. The film follows Buck, a domesticated dog, who is kidnapped from his California home and sold into service as an Alaskan sled dog. Buck struggles to survive the merciless Alaskan wilderness and maintain his true sense of self. Harrison Ford stars as frontiersman John Thornton, who becomes Buck’s fourth owner.

 

 

 

Q&A: Inside the Magical World of The Art of Encanto

The Academy Award-winning movie Encanto has captured our hearts with its emotional story and catchy music—and, of course, its gorgeous visual design! If you’ve been enchanted by the film’s look, you need to check out The Art of Encanto, a stunning book featuring never-before-seen production art, character designs, storyboards, and colorscripts. This oversized volume celebrates the art of this stunning animated movie, alongside exclusive interviews with the filmmakers and behind-the-scenes details into the creative development process. We sat down with the book’s author to give you an inside look at how this gorgeous book came to life.

D23: The Official Disney Fan Club: Your team took a research trip to Colombia to help develop the project. How important are these trips to realize the film we see in theaters?
Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster Jones (JPRLJ): On every Walt Disney Animation Studios project, the research process for the directors and visual artists is crucial. For Encanto, the visit to Colombia was especially important due to the specific influences of the culture seen in the film.  There are some things that can’t be gathered from books or the internet, like the warmth of the people, the natural majesty of the different environments, or the huge diversity that exists from town to town. However, the trip is only the tip of the iceberg, and much more research went into Encanto—they talked to architects, anthropologist, biologists, and other experts who went on to form our Colombian Cultural Trust—many of whom are quoted in the book! This work was so meaningful and can be seen in the book through various designs, including those inspired by mochila from the Wayuu and the sombrero vueltiao from the Zenú Indigenous Community.

D23: What about Colombia did you find most inspiring?
JPRLJ: How different people and places are from region to region. Colombia is far from being just one thing, and that was very exciting for the filmmakers  to explore. The biodiversity of plants and animals was also exciting, because there are so many species that we have never seen in animation before. The musical variety and instruments that exist in the country were also very exciting, and Lin-Manuel Miranda was deeply inspired by the sounds [the team] experienced in the trip.

D23: Mirabel is the first Latina lead character in a Disney Animation film. What other ways did your team strive to distinguish her from previous heroines?
JPRLJ: She is also the first one to wear glasses! Her costume design, done by costume design lead Neysa Bové, is also very unique and specific. It’s a blouse and skirt instead of a dress. (You can see a detailed design of all the iconography on her skirt in the book.) Her personality is also very specific, and art director, characters Bill Schwab and his team did an amazing job at finding very distinct features that felt true to the region—which you can clearly see in the many versions of Mirabel shown in her chapter. Animators also did a great job at finding that beautiful soul.

D23: The artwork and color keys in The Art of Encanto have deep, rich purples, blues, and other jewel tones. How do these colors influence the feeling and emotion of the film?
JPRLJ: The directors, production designer Ian Gooding and associate production designer Lorelay Bové wanted the film to be colorful, to carry the magical realism spirit that inspired it. The color choices were extremely thoughtful. One of my favorite parts of the book is the image that shows how they decided to distinguish the different members of the family through color choices.

D23: Casa Madrigal is not only a setting, but a character in the film. How did you inject personality into the architecture?
JPRLJ: They knew that the house would be alive from early on, and the challenge was how to execute it. Both the visual development and story departments did a lot of work to find different reasons and ways in which this could happen. Many of those explorations are in the book, even the ones that didn’t make it into the movie.

D23: What is your favorite part of the house?
JPRLJ: I grew up going to an old family hacienda, so I have a soft spot for stunning courtyards that you can find throughout Latin America. The art environments department, led by art directors, environments Camille André and Mehrdad Isvandi, nailed that and every single magical room. There are some stunning courtyard paintings in the book, and we even show a closeup on the tile work Lorelay Bové did!

D23: When you were designing the Madrigal family, how did you approach bringing their gifts into their designs? Was that process different for Mirabel?
JPRLJ: It all started with their personalities and family roles, and that dictated their gifts and design. The book has a section of some early boards the story team did to explore different powers and how they could be realized. You can also see how costume choices and symbology visually support their powers in subtle but meaningful ways. The contrast with Mirabel is that everything around her—elements in her room and costume—feel handmade by her, a way to express herself as a young woman trying to find who she is.

D23: Is there anything in this book that we haven’t seen before?
JPRLJ: There are tons of designs of elements that didn’t make it into the film—like the interior of Luisa’s room, family members that aren’t in the film, a different love interest for Isabela, and the list goes on! There are even alternative versions of the story represented by images created by director Byron Howard. I’m also excited to include in this book a section that shows you the evolution of Mirabel from initial design to final render, allowing us to show the artistry of many other departments.

D23: Why was working on Encanto and writing this book meaningful to you?
JPRLJ: As a Latin American little boy growing up with love towards the Disney heroines, I was beyond excited to have the opportunity to work on a film about our first Latina heroine. I also love art—I have a background in art publishing—so being able to celebrate the talented Disney Animation artists who worked on this film is a huge honor and responsibility I didn’t take lightly. I hope you enjoy the book; hours of the artists’ work went into creating every image you see in it, so to me it’s such a treasure.

Dancing with the Stars Moving to Disney+ This Fall

Things are shaking up on the dance floor! After an impressive 30 seasons on ABC, Dancing with the Stars is moving to a new home on Disney+. The hit series received a two-season pickup and will premiere exclusively in the U.S. and Canada this fall, making Dancing with the Stars the first live series to debut on the streaming service.

Each episode of Mira, Royal Detective centers on clever heroine Mira and her friends, including her sleuthing mongoose sidekicks Mikku and Chikku, as they help others by solving mysteries in their kingdom community of Jalpur.

The upcoming Bollywood-themed specials celebrate the iconic genre with higher stakes mystery and adventure; amazing musical performances; spectacular costuming; and elaborate dance numbers by series choreographer/dance consultant Nakul Dev Mahajan (FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance). Disneyland Paris Unveils First Look at Frozen-Inspired Land

For the first time in forever, the magic of Frozen is coming to Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris. Walt Disney Imagineering Paris recently unveiled the concept art for The Kingdom of Arendelle, a new land coming to the park; the announcement is the latest exciting transformation coming to the park, with Avengers Campus opening this summer.

Soon to be located at the heart of the park, guests will be immersed in the wintry atmosphere of the hit films. Elsa’s ice castle will stand at the top of a 131-foot-high snow-covered mountain, and the village will be home to a shop and restaurant that will serve Nordic-inspired meals. Naturally, a visit to Arendelle wouldn’t be complete without saying hello to beloved characters Elsa, Anna, Olaf, and Kristoff!

Leading into Arendelle, guests will walk along a new promenade adorned with lush green walkways and themed gardens. A table-service restaurant with an Art Nouveau design and spectacular views will be located on the promenade for guests looking to refuel before embarking on their next adventure—and it’ll also offer meet-and-greet opportunities with Disney characters.

The fan-favorite film, loosely based on the Newsboys Strike of 1899, follows homeless New York City newsboy Jack “Cowboy” Kelly (Christian Bale, center) and his fellow newsies as they try to survive in the big city. When Joseph Pulitzer (Robert Duvall) makes it near impossible to sell a “pape” by raising prices, the boys go on strike. Bill Pullman costars as Bryan Denton, a journalist sympathetic to the newsboys’ plight. Directed by Disney Legend Kenny Ortega, the film boasts memorable musical numbers written by Jack Feldman and Disney Legend Alan Menken.

Break out the sequins and cowboy boots and get ready to experience the “Best of Both Worlds”—it’s time to celebrate the 13th anniversary of Hannah Montana’s big-screen debut. In the feature film, Miley Stewart (Miley Cyrus, right) is struggling to balance family, friends, and schoolwork as well as her double life as pop star Hannah Montana. Miley’s dad (Billy Ray Cyrus, left) brings her back to her roots with a trip to her hometown of Crowley Corners, Tennessee, for a break from the spotlight—which ultimately leads her to embark on a tuneful journey of self-exploration.

CAMP Introduces First Disney-Themed Experience: Mickey & Friends x CAMP: An Extra Big Adventure

First-of-its-kind themed experience inspired by Disney’s iconic “Sensational Six” opens at CAMP’s NYC flagship store on May 28.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK (April 5, 2022) – CAMP, the Family Experience Company, will open its Magic Door to its newest themed experience, “Mickey & Friends: An Extra Big Adventure,” on May 28. This interactive, larger-than-life collaboration is the first of several Disney-themed experiences that CAMP will launch in 2022 at the 5th Avenue flagship store located at 110 5th Ave. and will travel to other CAMP locations later this year and beyond.

Launched in 2018, CAMP creates immersive retail experiences that inspire and engage families through a unique combination of play, product, and programming.
