While most of us would swat at the subject in this film, Walt Disney Studios put Nature’s Half Acre front and center by releasing it with Disney’s animated version of Lewis Carroll’s masterpiece work Alice in Wonderland. One of 13 nature films Walt Disney Studios produced between 1948 and 1960, Nature’s Half Acre tells the story of the amazing “grass roots” world of insects and their ever-present fight for survival. The time-lapse photography by John Nash Ott captures the essence of insect behavior through the seasons. Its microscopic snapshot of how bees, ants and billions of other insects beautify our world garnered the film an Oscar® at the 1952 Academy Awards®, a pretty big award for such a small cast.
