G’day, mate! On this day in 1990, the animated feature The Rescuers Down Under took audiences on an adventurous journey into the Australian outback. In this sequel to 1977’s The Rescuers, Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor reprise their roles as the voices of Bernard and Miss Bianca, two mice members of the Rescue Aid Society, who travel to Australia to rescue a young boy and a rare golden eagle from a poacher. For research, Disney’s artists traveled 4,000 miles across Australia with sketchbooks to grasp the nature of the land. They also turned to classic films by Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, and David Lean and lithographs by Paul Gustave Doré for inspiration.
