2,716 years after the first Olympic games, a champ was born. A courageous, well-rounded individual who on this day in 1942, in the debut of The Olympic Champ, demonstrated to audiences the fine arts of foot racing, the hurdles, the pole vault, hammer throwing, and the javelin. The dashing, demure, debonair, dauntless, darling is none other than the original Dippy Dawg…Goofy! Like most of the Goofy “how-to” cartoons, we never hear the hero’s voice, and that’s not a goof! The narrated “educational” format was developed after Goofy’s original voice, Pinto Colvig, resigned from Disney. Although Pinto occasionally returned to record new tracks, the situation led to the beloved shorts, where audiences learned how to do just about everything, and in the most comical and goofy way.
