The Pluto cartoon short Pluto’s Sweater was first released on this day in 1949, spinning the yarn of a pretty pink sweater that Minnie Mouse has knitted for Pluto, much to his own dismay. Pluto is noticeably not too keen on the idea of wearing the sweater, and Minnie’s cat Figaro delights in Pluto’s uncomfortable situation. When Minnie sends her pet outside donning the sweater, he ends up getting it wet, which shrinks it and brings our mouse heroine to tears. Much to the chagrin of Figaro, Pluto is eager to point out that it is now the perfect size for the little cat. Interestingly, Figaro is the very cat that belonged to Geppetto in 1940’s Pinocchio. The breakout star went on to appear in a handful of cartoon shorts including several of his own.
