In a truly virtuoso performance, Mickey, in the aptly named short Just Mickey, enthralls an audience with a solo tour de force performance on violin. Just Mickey is the first Mickey short that wasn’t drawn by Ub Iwerks, and it features a couple gags that would probably wow even today’s 3D-familiar audiences (for example, the opening scene in which curtain after curtain opens before finally revealing Mickey—very small in the distance—who then clacks his way forward on the stage only to take a heckle-inducing pratfall). Mickey then plays a selection of classical pieces, revealing a gamut of emotions and hairstyles (yes, Mickey has hair in this short!). Animation expert David Gerstein says “a recently found original release print of Just Mickey gives it its common alternate title, Fiddling Around, which we now believe to have always been its original release title… it seems Just Mickey was really just a working title.”
