On this day in 1924, Alice’s Fishy Story hooked audiences on the fifth installment of Walt Disney’s Alice Comedy series, featuring young Virginia Davis in the lead role. In the live-action first portion of the film, Alice is practicing her piano when the local boys beckon her to join them on a fishing trip. She gets her dog to take over the piano so she can sneak out. She and the gang hitchhike to the perfect spot for fishing where Alice tells them a fishy tale which is depicted in an animated sequence featuring the live-action Alice and her animated cat pal, Julius, who help out the Eskimos by using creativity to catch fish for them. While the animated portion of the film is the main focus, the performers, costumes, mischievous situations, and high production quality of the live-action sequences look like they could be right out of one of Hal Roach’s Our Gang comedies (a.k.a. Little Rascals).
