After the success of Pixar’s first feature film, Toy Story, the much ANTicipated follow-up, a bug’s life, was released on this day in 1998, telling the story of an independent thinker ant named Flik. After one of his inventions goes wrong, he embarks on a mission to save his colony. To ensure authenticity for their latest flik, er, flick, Pixar created a “bug cam” and filmed the world from a bug’s-eye view, discovering that clovers looked like giant trees and a clump of grass was like a giant redwood forest.
In 2002, humans finally got to experience that firsthand when a bug’s land opened in Disney California Adventure, with the complete antmosphere designed to recreate a bug’s point-of-view. During its initial release, a bug’s life was the highest-grossing animated release of 1998, making it safe to say it created quite a buzz.
