Books to Read During Hispanic Latinx Heritage Month

By Andie Hagemann

Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month—September 15 through October 15—is well underway, and to celebrate the occasion we’ve compiled a youth-oriented Disney reading list. Here we present six books available from Disney Publishing to delight the young and young at heart.

Illustrated book cover with teal text reading “Disney Encanto: A Tale of Three Sisters.”Mirabel, Isabella, and Luisa are stacked vertically and surrounded by colorful flowers, animals, birds, butterflies, and emblems.

Disney Encanto: A Tale of Three Sisters – Anika Fajardo

Relive the enchantment of Encanto through this delightful book. The Madrigals live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a magical house and charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift—from super strength to the power to heal—every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

Antonio’s Amazing Gift – Naibe Reynoso

Inspired by characters and scenes from Encanto, this brightly illustrated picture book celebrates a love of animals, new friends, and the magical gifts of the Encanto.

Illustrated book cover with gold text reading “The Cursed Carnival and Other Countries.”Behind the text is a tall red and white striped carnival tent with lights hanging down. Above the tent is an ominous dark sky.

The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities – Rick Riordan and others

Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents 10 new stories—including one of his own—about what it takes to be a hero in any time, setting, and universe. The funny and fast-paced adventures include own-voice stories representing these cultures: Indian, Mesoamerican, Korean, Cuban, Black American, African, Navajo, Mexican, Mesopotamian, and Celtic.

A teen girl wears a purple, long-sleeved sweatshirt and dark slacks. She holds a lantern above her head in her left hand. Behind her is a dark forest with green eyeballs seen in the shadows. The blue text reads “Paola Santiago and the Forest of Nightmares.”

Paola Santiago and the Forest of Nightmares – Tehlor Kay Mejia

The next installment following science-obsessed Paola Santiago picks up six months after she confronted the legendary La Llorona, and life is nothing like she’d expected it to be. Paola is barely speaking to her best friends—Dante and Emma—and what’s worse, her mom has a totally annoying boyfriend. Even with her chupacabra puppy, Bruto, around, Pao can’t escape the feeling that she’s all alone in the world. Pao has no one to tell that she’s having nightmares again, this time set in a terrifying forest. Even more troubling? At their center is her estranged father, an enigma of a man she barely remembers. And when Dante’s abuela falls mysteriously ill, it seems that the dad Pao never knew just might be the key to healing the eccentric old woman. Pao’s search for her father will send her far from home, where she will encounter new monsters and ghosts, a devastating betrayal, and finally, the forest of her nightmares. Mejia draws on her Mexican heritage to tell a wild and wondrous story that combines creatures from folklore with modern-day challenges.

A young girl holds her mouth agape and looks on. She wears a crown on her head and is surrounded by blue circles. Behind her are tall woodland trees. The blue text reads “Solimar: The Sword of the Monarchs.”

Solimar: The Sword of the Monarchs – Pam Muñoz Ryan

On the brink of her quinceañera and her official coronation, Solimar visits the oyamel forest to sit among the monarch butterflies. There, the sun pierces through a sword-shaped crevice in a boulder, which shines on her and sends the butterflies humming and swirling around her. After the magical frenzy, she realizes she’s been given a gift and a burden: she can predict the near future! She has also become a protector of the young and weak butterflies. This alone would be a huge responsibility, but tragedy strikes when a neighboring king invades while her father and brother and many others are away. The remaining villagers are taken hostage—all except Solimar.

A young girl stands facing a long staircase. She wears a blue dress and a large, orange flame surrounds her. Around the staircase are blue and purple lights. The silver text reads “The Lords of Night: A Shadow Bruja Novel.”

The Lords of Night: A Shadow Bruja Novel, Book 1 – J.C. Cervantes

Available beginning Tuesday, October 4, this is a new spinoff from the Storm Runner trilogy. Fourteen-year-old Renata Santiago is the most powerful godborn of them all, a bruja with a unique combination of DNA. The Mexican blood from her dad’s side gives her the ability to manipulate shadows. Her mom, Pacific, a Maya goddess, gifted her a magical rope that controls time, and Ren recently used it to save a few gods from getting stuck forever in 1987. She brought them back to the present, but her BFF Ah Puch, the once fearsome god of death, darkness, and destruction, is now a teenager with no divine powers. Ren is also a girl with ordinary hopes and dreams. She wishes, for example, that her blog about alien sightings would garner more respect. She’s always been absolutely convinced that there’s a connection between aliens and the Maya civilization. Plenty of online haters feel differently, and they call her a fake, a liar, and a loser. When Ren receives an email about an alien sighting in Kansas, she thinks it may support her theory.

Unwrapping the Secrets of Under Wraps 2

By Zach Johnson

More mummies, more problems.

Premiering Sunday, September 25, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel and Friday, September 30, on Disney+, Under Wraps 2 picks up as Marshall (Malachi Barton), Gilbert (Christian J. Simon), and Amy (Sophia Hammons) are preparing for a spooktacular Halloween-themed wedding! It should be a happy day for Amy’s dad (Claude Knowlton) and his fiancé, Carl (Antonio Cayonne)… but things start to unravel when the three BFFs discover their mummy pal Harold (Phil Wright) and his eternal love, Rose (Rryla McIntosh), may be in imminent danger.

“At first, Amy and Gilbert are running the school newspaper, just kind of living their normal lives,” Hammons tells D23. “They realize that not only has Harold been moved to another museum, but another mummy from his timeline has been revived—and he’s coming to get Harold.”

That mummy, Sobek (T.J. Storm), harbors a 1,000-year-old grudge against his best friend-turned-bitter-rival. “It’s super chaotic,” Hammons says of the havoc Sobek wreaks. Indeed, Simon adds, “There is a lot going on. It’s an emotional roller coaster.”

(From left to right): Sophia Hammons, in character as Amy, Christian J. Simon, in character as Gilbert, and Malachi Barton, in character as Marshall, walk through a corn maze at night. They are wearing jackets, hats and pants, and Gilbert is recording a video on his phone. The three of them have scared expressions on their faces.

Despite how intimidating Sobek is onscreen, the actors say the new character was a welcome presence on set. “My favorite scene to film was when Sobek brings his guards to life, because these guys were huge,” Barton tells D23. “They were so tall, and it was so fun to have so many mummies on set at one time.“ It was equally fun for Wright, who played the sole mummy in the first film. “It was pretty awesome to have more people on set who had to experience what I went through,” Wright says. “It’s always more fun when there are more characters that view the workday the same way you do.”

A sequel inherently requires bigger stakes—and according to the cast, Sobek is much a more cunning adversary than the criminals their characters faced in 2021’s Under Wraps. With help from his hypnotized lacky, Larry (Jordan Conley), Sobek kidnaps Rose—forcing Marshall, Gilbert, Amy, Harold, and Buzzy (Melanie Brook) to find a way to save her and get back in time for Amy’s dad’s wedding. “Defeating a super powerful mummy is clearly no small task, especially when he has a laser scepter,” Barton says. “But as you will see in the movie, you can do just about anything if you work together.”

(From left to right): T.J. Storm, in character as the mummy Sobek, stands strong as he is kicked in the chest by Rryla McIntosh, in character as the mummy Rose.

Naturally, the characters have grown up quite a lot since audiences first met them in Under Wraps. “In the first movie, a lot of people saw Gilbert as the scaredy cat—which he was!” Simon says. “Now, he’s focusing hard on reinventing himself. He’s really trying to show people that he’s not as afraid he used to be. In fact, he’s started a social media channel, called Gutsy Gilbert, where he reviews all the new Halloween mazes.”

As for Marshall, Barton says, “Similar to the first movie, he really takes on the job of saving Harold—and now Rose, as well. But I think he is also trying to find himself and his place among his best friends.” Amy, in addition to running the school newspaper with Gilbert, is trying to be supportive of her father. “She’s just trying to go to celebrate Amy’s dad’s wedding,” she says. “And then it turns into a whole big thing.”

Obviously, being cast in a sequel to the Disney Channel Original Movie was a dream come true for McIntosh. “Joining the Under Wraps family was everything I wished it would be and more,” she says. “The experience of shooting and creating something so magical is something I’ll never forget. What made the experience so impactful was the people I got to work, learn, and play with. The cast and crew were both amazing!”

Phil Wright, in character as the mummy Harold, is bandaged and wearing an amulet. He is standing on an illuminated dance floor, with his arms and legs outstretched. In the background, bowling pins are lit up and people are wearing Halloween costumes.

Wright worked closely with McIntosh to show her how to best bring a mummy to life… so to speak. “It’s a process that all the mummies have to go through,” he explains. “Alex Zamm, our director, and I call it ‘Mummy Training.’” Harold’s relationship with Rose adds a new dimension to his personality, Wright adds: “Everyone will be pleased to see how much of an effect Rose has on Harold. She brings out another side of him.”

“Not only are Harold and Rose each other’s one true loves, but they are best friends and never forget to have fun—sometimes too much fun,” McIntosh says. Speaking of having “too much fun,” McIntosh’s favorite part of filming was also the most challenging, as it involved “discovering who Rose was and how she felt, then finding creative ways to portray her passions, emotions, and intentions without having dialogue.”

The mummies may not be able to speak, but the cast can’t say enough about how excited they are to share Under Wraps 2 with audiences. “I think fans will be most excited about seeing their favorite characters back together again on another crazy adventure,” Barton says. “This movie was so fun to make, and I just can’t wait for everyone to experience it and meet the new characters!” Wright tells D23, “I hope they appreciate the fun-loving work we put into this project. With the addition of more mummies, more dancing, and more adventure, I’m sure they’ll have a blast watching.”

Available in a large (and growing) assortment of designs and colors, MagicBand+ offers yet another opportunity to show off personal style; it’s also rechargeable—with an included charging cable—and waterproof. And when MagicBand+ is paired to a smartphone device through the Disneyland app*, it unlocks personalization options such as selecting unique light colors and adjusting the vibration and motion recognition settings.

MagicBand+ features and experiences will vary between Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. But at launch, the wearable will boast a host of convenient capabilities—with more to come… For instance, users will be able to connect their MagicBand+ to their theme park ticket or Magic Key pass in the Disneyland app for an easy way to enter the Disneyland Resort theme parks (valid park admission and reservation required), or use it to check in at Lightning Lane entrances (separate valid Lightning Lane entry required).

MagicBand+ will also add new, immersive elements and surprises to park experiences. In sync with special moments during select nighttime spectaculars—including World of Color at Disney California Adventure Park—the band will complement the magic in the skies by pulsing with lights and vibrations. And look for a brand-new quest to help you explore Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge like never before.

There’s lots more to come—so keep your eyes peeled here at D23.com, as well as at the Disney Parks Blog, for all the latest and greatest about what MagicBand+ can do for you. See y’all at the parks!

*Message, data, and roaming rates may apply for use of Disneyland app and Play Disney Parks app. Availability subject to handset limitations and features may vary by handset or service provider. Coverage and app stores not available everywhere. If you’re under 18, get your parents’ permission first.

Building a Fairytale: The Construction of Cinderella Castle, Part 2

By Matt Moryc and Maggie Evenson, Walt Disney Archives

Welcome back to the second and final part of our look at the construction of Cinderella Castle. These photos, selected from the Walt Disney Archives Photo Library, are only a taste of the thousands of vintage Walt Disney World images that reside in the collection. In case you missed Part One, please visit this link.

A unique aerial view of Cinderella Castle under construction, taken from above and behind the Castle. The newly planted trees of the Central Plaza are visible at the top of the photo.

A crane lifts the roof portion of a tower into place.

There’s much to see in this aerial shot of the Castle and nearby Fantasyland. Notice the Castle’s golden spire has been staged at the top of the ramps before its eventual placement at the top of the structure. To the left of the castle are the buildings for both it’s a small world (green structure) and “Mickey Mouse Revue,” while the steel structure of the Pinocchio Village Haus takes shape next to it’s a small world. In the top right corner is construction on the lagoon and infrastructure for the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea submarine voyage, while the Snow White’s Adventures and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride buildings sit just below it.

The top portion of Cinderella Castle’s tallest spire is lowered into place as a construction worker in the turret helps to ensure the proper connections are made.

A shot taken from the entrance to the Castle foyer. A sign was placed over the face of the Castle’s clock to remind the planners, designers, and laborers when the Magic Kingdom had to be completed: “Remember Opening Oct. 1971.” A similar sign was also placed over the clock face of the City Hall building on Main Street, U.S.A.

Inside the Castle foyer, the story of Cinderella is depicted along the walls via five dazzling mosaic murals, with each panel in the shape of a Gothic arch 15 feet high by 10 feet wide. This photo shows tile setters cementing the glass pieces into place. The murals were designed by Disney Legend and Walt Disney Imagineer Dorothea Redmond and translated into hundreds of thousands of pieces of glass by a renowned tile mosaicist. More than 400 colors were used, with 100 accent colors, and some of the glass pieces were infused with silver and 14-carat gold. According to a Disney press release at the time, “Some pieces are as small as the head of a tack and many more are hand cut and shaped by a power grindstone.”
