Big Business

Big Business is Released

Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin were beside themselves when the Touchstone film Big Business was released on this day in 1988. The film tells the story of two identical twins who are mismatched at birth only to reunite 40 years later—with the stars each playing dual roles. Big Business is noteworthy from a technical standpoint, utilizing the latest advancements in technology to enable the actors to interact with their twins. Previously in films such as The Parent Trap, an actor had to be filmed on one half of the screen with the other half blacked out. The scene would then be repeated with the twin on the opposite side of the screen, with the other half blacked out, and the two halves were later spliced together. Big Business utilized a new computerized system which allowed the camera to precisely recreate its last movement so that it may tilt, pan, and shift focus in the twin shots. You can “bette” that the final result had audiences “doubled” over with laughter.
