Behind the Scenes of Marvel Studios’ Echo

By Zach Johnson

Get ready for one killer drop when all five episodes of Marvel Studios' Echo debut simultaneously on Tuesday, January 9, only on Disney+ and Hulu. The series spotlights Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) as Wilson Fisk's (Vincent D'Onofrio) criminal empire pursues her. When the journey brings her back home, she must confront both her family and her legacy.

"One of the most interesting aspects about the character is the fact that she's a villain in Hawkeye, right?" director and executive producer Sydney Freeland said during the virtual Echo press conference in December 2023. "But once you start pulling on that thread, you look at where she comes from. This is a Deaf, indigenous, amputee girl from Oklahoma. How the hell does she end up being one of the top-ranking lieutenants in Kingpin's army?"

Getting into Maya's headspace was easy for Cox, who made her MCU debut in the 2021 miniseries Hawkeye. "We both have childhood trauma," Cox explained. "For example, I am an amputee. I went through many different kinds of surgeries as a child, and that made me a warrior, in a sense. Maya [endured] the death of her mother and all of these tragic events that happened in her life. We both have different traumatic experiences. That makes us similar in a way, because we're both warriors, and we're both tough, and we're both badass."

Intended for mature audiences, the series shows a gritter side of the MCU. "The goal was never to try to turn her into, like, Captain America," Freeland said. In fact, she added, Marvel Studios executives encouraged her to "lean into" Maya's journey post-Hawkeye. "The tone and the visual style came from the story and the circumstances of the character."

As Maya will quickly learn, no bad deed goes unpunished. After their confrontation in the Hawkeye finale, Maya assumed she'd seen the last of Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin—but he's got unfinished business with her. "Without [good] writing, I can't really do much other than show up," said D'Onofrio, who will reprise his role in the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again. "The writing is there, so it gives me the opportunity to bring the character forward."

While hiding out at home, Maya reunites with several family members she hasn't seen in years, from uncle Henry (Chaske Spencer) to cousin Bonnie (Devery Jacobs). "I always looked at [Henry] as a touchstone between Maya's past and her present," Spencer said, adding, "He's just a regular guy thrown into a very unique situation." Meanwhile, Bonnie gives viewers "a glimpse of who Maya might have been had she not been pulled away to New York," Jacobs said. Despite time and distance, there's a rich "history" between them that is undeniable, she added: "Even though they're cousins, it's almost like they're sisters."

With fans about to learn more about who Maya was and how that informed who she is, D'Onofrio can't wait for fans to see all that Cox brings to her role. "It takes talent, it takes guts, and that girl carried the show like a pro," he said. "There's nothing you can say, really, other than she's just extremely impressive." Spencer shared that sentiment, saying, "Working with Alaqua was phenomenal... I think the audience is going to be very impressed. I learned a lot from working with her, and that's what I love about this job. You get to work with some interesting, talented people, and at the end of the day, you create something special to give the audience. They are going to be very happy with the results."

Meet the Characters of Marvel Studios’ Echo

By Courtney Potter

It’s a sure-to-be-thrilling way to kick off the new year... The good folks at Marvel Studios will soon present Echo, spotlighting Maya Lopez as she’s pursued by Wilson Fisk’s criminal empire. When the journey brings her home, she’s forced to confront her own family and legacy.

Echo stars Alaqua Cox (Hawkeye) as Maya Lopez, as well as Chaske Spencer (Wild Indian, The English), Tantoo Cardinal (Killers of the Flower Moon, Stumptown), Devery Jacobs (FX’s Reservation Dogs, American Gods), Zahn McClarnon (Dark Winds, FX’s Reservation Dogs), and Cody Lightning (Hey, Viktor!, Four Sheets to the Wind)—with Graham Greene (1883, Goliath) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Hawkeye, Daredevil, Law & Order: Criminal Intent), who returns to the villainous role of Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin.

Episodes of the series are directed by Sydney Freeland (Navajo) and Catriona McKenzie (Gunaikurnai); Kevin Feige, Stephen Broussard, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Victoria Alonso, Richie Palmer, Jason Gavin (Blackfeet), Marion Dayre, and Sydney Freeland are executive producers, and Jennifer L. Booth and Amy Rardin are co-executive producers.

With Echo’s big premiere on Tuesday, January 9, we’re taking a closer look at who’s who in the highly anticipated series:

In an image from Marvel Studios’ Echo, Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) is leaning back on what appears to be the bed of a truck, wearing dark clothing and looking at something off camera to the left.

Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox)
Maya is a force to be reckoned with. She’s skilled in martial arts and hand-to-hand combat—and is at home on her motorcycle. When she flees New York City after assassinating the crime boss Kingpin, she’s forced to reunite with the family she left long ago under tragic circumstances. “In Hawkeye, Maya was a villain,” says director Sydney Freeland. “And while she’s our protagonist in Echo, we wanted to embrace those darker sides and flaws within the character, who is on an extreme emotional journey trying to navigate the pent-up anger inside her. She’s a very nuanced character with culture and ancestry in the Choctaw community, which is something we hadn’t seen before.” In addition to the character’s cultural background, Maya’s physical prowess underscores her mental toughness and is indicative of her soon-to-be antihero status.

Cox left her home on the Menominee Indian Reservation in Keshena, Wisconsin, to join the Hawkeye cast just a few years ago. “When I jumped into the Marvel world, it was a big transition for me, but I was so grateful for the opportunity and journey,” says the actor, who learned about plans for Echo while filming Hawkeye. “I felt so overwhelmed and shocked because it was a lead role in my second project, which seemed kind of crazy. I remember telling my family and it just meant so much because it gives Indigenous people a leading character and real representation in an authentic way. It feels amazing to be able to have the opportunity inspire and empower a future generation of people.”

In an image from Marvel Studios’ Echo, Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) is leaning back against what appears to be a truck—there’s a sign on the back of the truck stating “Forklift Floor Rating: 24,000 pounds.” She is wearing dark clothing, with one foot pulled up on the ledge she’s sitting on.

The actor is intently aware of what the character’s physicality will mean to others in the amputee community. “I wanted to show people that amputees and people with disabilities can do anything,” says Cox. “Although I am deaf and an amputee, I was able to do a lot of my fighting and stunts—and it was important to me to show my prosthetic leg and not try to hide it under clothes. Maya Lopez is a badass, and I wanted people with disabilities to have someone that they could look up to and see within themselves.”

Additionally, Cox’s Maya is the second deaf hero to join the MCU, after Lauren Ridloff’s Makkari in Eternals. It was important to filmmakers that the storytelling and approach to production embraced the character’s preferred way of communicating with others. In fact, many scenes feature no spoken dialogue; the production also provided weekly group learning sessions for the filmmakers and crew to help with the overall communication on set. “All the people on the crew were able to take sign language classes for a few months before we actually started filming, which was really cool,” says Cox.

Says director Sydney Freeland, “After studying American Sign Language and talking with [consulting producer and ASL master] Doug Ridloff, one of the things that became apparent was that the hands are an extension of one’s emotion and expression. The hands are the text, and the face is the subtext, and you need those two things together to get an idea of what a person’s feeling. We built our entire visual language with that in mind.”

In an image from Marvel Studios’ Echo, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) is wearing his iconic white suit with black button-up shirt and is gesturing at something or someone off camera to the right. He’s in a darkened room.

Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio)
Fisk was once known as “Uncle” to Maya, who looked up to him after relocating to New York City with her father as a child. Fisk was long ago crowned Kingpin by the NYC criminal underworld. He was rightly feared by all—nobody dared challenge Kingpin—at least not until Maya Lopez discovered that he gave the orders to have her father killed. Their final encounter ended in a gunshot... but Fisk has the kind of power that always seems to eclipse even the grimmest circumstances.

“I love that Echo is Maya Lopez’s origin story,” says the actor. “You get introduced to this Native American world and it’s intense, spiritual, and deeply emotional—it’s all about her family and ancestors. Kingpin is both a physically and emotionally brutal character. There is a strong layer of a father-daughter thing with Kingpin and Maya. It’s a great way to bring out all kinds of intensities and emotions and their dynamic has this flavor that’s completely unique.”

Henry “Black Crow” Lopez (Chaske Spencer)
Henry is Maya’s well-intended uncle who owns the local roller-skating rink. But Henry has a troubled past that he can’t quite escape—including ties to Fisk’s criminal underworld.

Spencer, who fills Uncle Henry’s shoes, says not only is his character the brother of Maya’s late father, William, he still has his hands in the very business that led to her father’s untimely death. “Henry feels guilty about his brother’s death, and there’s a lot that Maya brings to the situation that I don’t think Henry is ready to face yet,” he explains.

Skully (Graham Greene)
Wise, funny, and kind-natured, Skully owns the town pawn shop. He is a grandfather figure to Maya, offering his support, warmth, and guidance along the way. Unlike many of her estranged family members, Skully is willing to set aside any differences and move forward with love.

“When Maya was a young child, [Skully] was going out with her grandmother, Chula,” says Greene. “Maya comes back into his life after she damages her prosthetic leg and wants him to repair it for her—it helps rekindle their relationship.”

Chula (Tantoo Cardinal)
Chula is Maya’s estranged grandmother. Her overwhelming anger following the tragic loss of her daughter, Maya’s mother, led to the hasty departure of Maya and her father. Maya, so young and impressionable, shared in Chula’s grief—but the distance between them has only grown in the years since they last saw each other.

For Cardinal, her character’s maternal instincts are being tested by Maya so many years later. “In the beginning of the series, Maya and Chula’s relationship is pretty fractured and they are not in a good place,” the actress says. “Maya comes from strength, but she also comes from a place of confusion.”

Bonnie (Devery Jacobs)
Bonnie is Maya’s estranged cousin and childhood best friend who works as an EMT in Tamaha, Oklahoma. She and Maya were like sisters as kids, and Bonnie took it hard when Maya left. She’d love nothing more than to be close again with Maya.

“Maya Lopez is so badass, and she goes through the world very guarded,” says Jacobs. “But it’s through glimpses of interacting with Bonnie that we really get to see Maya’s heart and vulnerability.”

Biscuits (Cody Lightning)
Biscuits is Maya’s well-meaning cousin, who helps her get settled when she returns home to Oklahoma.

“Biscuits is Maya’s sidekick, who provides some comic relief for her,” says Lightning. “He’s like a big, earnest puppy dog—but he’s very resourceful and always figures out a way to get things done for Maya. He’s very loyal and will do anything for his family, even if that means getting into some trouble.”

5 Things to Know About Marvel Studios’ What If…? Season 2

By Zach Johnson

In Season 2 of Marvel Studios' What If...?, The Watcher (voice of Jeffrey Wright) continues to guide viewers through the vast Multiverse as new and familiar faces from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe question, revisit, and twist key moments from MCU films and series. The animated series will return Friday, December 22, with the episode "What If... Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?" A new episode will then premiere nightly for nine nights.

Recently, three members of the creative team—director and executive producer Bryan Andrews, writer and executive producer AC Bradley, and writer and producer Matthew Chauncey—participated in a post-screening Q&A at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, to tease what's in store for Season 2. Below are highlights from their animated conversation.

1. The rumored "lost episode" from Season 1 will stream in Season 2.
The long-awaited "What If... Iron Man Crashed into the Grandmaster?" episode will stream Monday, December 25, on Disney+. It had nearly been completed before Season 1 was released in 2021, Andrews confirmed, but "it was a casualty of the pandemic. With the vendors, it was a little difficult for them to get cooking on it." Luckily, another episode "was super ahead of schedule," so they pulled "a switcheroo" and released it in lieu of the Iron Man episode. "The editors did an amazing job," he promised. "It's going to be a lot of fun!"

2. There is a totally '80s-inspired episode.
"What If.... Peter Quill Attacks Earth's Mightiest Heroes?" streams Saturday, December 23, and is set during a totally tubular time in history. "Fan casting different Avengers lineups is something we all do, and we ended up doing it in the writers room," Chauncey said. "Early on in Season 1, one of our ideas was, 'What would an Avengers movie look like if it took place in a different era—if there was an Avengers-level crisis in the 1980s?' The idea of setting an episode in the '80s really excited us. Thinking about the history of the MCU, which is so rich, you realize there actually are so many great characters established in the films who were active during that period." With Michael Douglas returning to voice Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man, "it was a trip getting to write for him," Chauncey said, "since the '80s were when he became so iconic." Disney Legend Kurt Russell returns as Ego, "which was awesome," Andrews said. "We got so many of the actors back. It's incredible!"

Tony Stark wears a Santa Claus suit in Marvel Studios' What If...? Season 2.

3. One actor negotiated his Season 2 appearance back in Season 1.
Disney Legend Jon Favreau reprises his role as Tony Stark's righthand man, Happy Hogan, in "What If... Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?" premiering Sunday, December 24, on Disney+. "First of all, he's amazing; he's one of the absolute nicest and most talented human beings," Bradley said. "When he did Season 1, he jokingly made a deal. He said, 'I'll do it, but in Season 2, I get to headline—and I want to do 'The Freak.' That was the first time Matt and I had heard of 'The Freak.' And we were like, 'Oh, no... What are we agreeing to?' Later, as we were talking out the episode, we were like, 'Let's make it an ode to Mr. Favreau.' We started looking at his amazing movies, and we even have a little mention of his Chef show in there."

4. One character is guaranteed to make audiences "quack up."
In "What If... Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?" Nebula (voiced by Karen Gillan) reaches out to Howard the Duck (voiced by Seth Green) after a problem arises on the planet Xandar. "In one of the early versions of the script, Howard was a side character; I think he was like a like a reporter/paparazzi guy giving people some trouble," Andrews said. "But Seth was so funny in Season 1, so we retooled the character a little bit after he did such a good job. Everybody had a blast and loved coming back to play their characters slightly differently."

5. Although What If...? is an anthology series, a throughline remains.
"Fate has made The Watcher and Captain Carter lone warriors, and I think part of the fun of watching their journey is that they're kind of mirrors for one another," Chauncey said. "The Watcher is going to reckon with some of the choices he made in Season 1 in terms of how he engages and watches Captain Carter navigate her life in these episodes, which is cool."
