Our 11 Favorite Music Docs and Concert Films on Disney+

By the D23 Team

At Thanksgiving in 2021, we were especially thankful for The Beatles: Get Back. Often referred to as the most influential band of all time, The Beatles are the best-selling music act in history… and Oscar®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson is the only person in 50 years to be given exclusive access to the legendary band’s private film archives! Jackson later used that footage as the foundation of his three-part docuseries, available exclusively on Disney+. Of course, The Beatles: Get Back isn’t the only music doc or concert film available for Disney+ subscribers. Below, in chronological order, we present 11 of our favorite titles:

Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert

Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert (2008)
Consider this your backstage pass to hang out with Miley Cyrus, star of Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana. Filmed during her sold-out, 69-city, standing-room-only tour, the documentary film features appearances by Disney Legend Kenny Ortega and the Jonas Brothers. As Hannah Montana, Cyrus performs hit songs such as “Nobody’s Perfect” and “Rock Star”—and as herself, she rocks out to “See You Again,” “Start All Over,” and more.

Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience

Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience (2009)
If you didn’t get your Jonas Brothers fix in Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, this should do it! Follow the trio on their Burnin’ Up tour, which includes special collaborations with Demi Lovato (“This Is Me”) and Taylor Swift (“Should’ve Said No”). This is a special look at what the Jonas Brothers’ lives are like both on- and off-stage.

Folklore: The Long Pond Sessions

Folklore: The Long Pond Sessions (2020)
Speaking of Swift, we’re still obsessing over this intimate concert performance of every song from her Grammy®-nominated album folklore. Accompanied by her co-producers, Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff, Swift shares the creation and meaning behind each song.

Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles

Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles (2021)
Grammy® Award winner Billie Eilish performs every song from her sophomore album, Happier Than Ever, in sequential order from the stage of the legendary Hollywood Bowl. Featuring animated elements that take viewers on a dreamlike journey through Eilish’s hometown, the concert film also includes guest appearances by FINNEAS and other artists. (Because we can’t get enough of Eilish’s brilliance, we recommend following this up with The Making of Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles, released on Disney+ Day.)

The Beatles: Get Back

The Beatles: Get Back (2021)
How do you tell a new story about The Beatles? If you’re Jackson, you start by combing through over 60 hours of unseen footage and over 150 hours of unheard audio. The Beatles: Get Back is the story of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr as they plan their first live show in over two years, capturing the writing and rehearsing of 14 new songs, originally intended for release on an accompanying live album. The three-part documentary features—for the first time in its entirety—their last live performance as a group, the unforgettable rooftop concert on London’s Savile Row, as well as other songs and classic compositions featured on the band’s final two albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be.

Olivia Rodrigo, in sunglasses and black coat with brown faux fur accents, sits in a director’s chair in a field. The back of the director’s chair is facing the camera and features the word “Sunset” in white text. Olivia has turned her body around in the chair so she is facing the audience. Behind her is a blue sky with fluffy white clouds.

Olivia Rodrigo: driving home 2 u (2022)
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star turned musical tour-de-force Olivia Rodrigo takes a literal trip down memory lane in this behind-the-scenes film. Traveling from Salt Lake City, where she began writing her triple-platinum debut album “SOUR” (Geffen Records), to Los Angeles, Rodrigo recounts the story of “SOUR” along with performing new live arrangements of her songs and sharing intimate interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.

Elton John, wearing a bejeweled robe designed to mimic a Dodgers uniform, has his back to the camera, arms wide while facing a massive crowd inside Dodgers Stadium.

Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium (2022)
Originally livestreamed on Disney+, this historic concert was one of the greatest send-offs of all time to global superstar Elton John. Paying tribute to his 1975 performance at Dodgers Stadium that cemented his global success, the three-hour concert event features guest artists such as Dua Lipa and Kiki Dee honoring John with duet performances, along with John himself performing beloved hits including “Bennie and the Jets,” “Tiny Dancer,” “I’m Still Standing,” “Crocodile Rock,” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”

Taylor Swift, wearing a sparkly iridescent body suit, looks out into the distance while playing a pink guitar. A pink and purple microphone and stand is directed at her face, although she appears to not currently be singing.

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) (2024)
Get out your friendship bracelets, Swifties, because the record-breaking phenomenon concert film Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour has debuted on Disney+ with a special (Taylor’s Version) cut! Capturing the epic tour that took the world by storm, Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) not only showcases Taylor Swift’s career-spanning Eras Tour concert, but also features four additional main show songs not shown during the film’s theatrical run. Plus, stay through the credits to enjoy an acoustic collection of four unseen performances, including fan favorites “You Are in Love” and “Maroon.”

In a vintage black and white photo, Brian Wilson sits at a piano, immersed in song with his eyes closed as he plays. Standing beside him from left to right are the other members of The Beach Boys: Al Jardine, Mike Love, Carl Wilson, and Dennis Wilson, who are singing along.

The Beatles: Let It Be (2024)
The Beatles: Let It Be, now streaming on Disney+, represents the fully realized version of director Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s original documentary. Shot in 1969, the film captures The Beatles as they wrote and rehearsed for what would become the Let It Be album. Despite its limited availability over the years, the film became famous for its iconic rooftop concert finale. Its significance has only grown following Peter Jackson’s 2021 docuseries, The Beatles: Get Back.

In a black and white photo, singer Bon Jovi stands onstage, raising a microphone on a stand above his head with his right hand. He is clad in a leather jacket, a partially unbuttoned shirt, and trousers. Three headlights behind him cast beams.

Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story (2024)
Hulu’s documentary series Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story delves into the band’s remarkable journey spanning over 40 years, from humble beginnings performing in gritty rock clubs in New Jersey to recreating platinum records and being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The four-part series, available on Disney+, also takes a close look into lead singer Bon Jovi’s vocal injury, which nearly led him to quit the band.

The Beatles are performing a song. From left to right, Paul McCartney is sitting on a chair away from the camera, playing a guitar, George Harrison is sitting opposite McCartney, playing a guitar, Ringo Starr is at the drums, and John Lennon is sitting on a chair away from the camera, playing a guitar. There’s a red ombre backdrop behind them.

The Beach Boys (2024)
Directed by Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny, this Disney+ Original film includes interviews with Brian Wilson, Mike Love, David Marks, and Al Jardine, along with clips featuring Lindsey Buckingham, Don Was, and others. The Beach Boys is a tribute to the legendary band that transformed pop music, creating an iconic, harmonious sound that embodied the California dream.

What’s Coming to Disney Experiences in 2024 and Beyond

By Moss Cohen

“It’s something that will never be finished. Something that I can keep developing, keep plussing and adding to. It’s alive. It will be a live breathing thing that will need change.”

Walt Disney’s words about Disneyland have remained a guiding principle for the Disney Experiences segment since they were first uttered roughly 70 years ago. The summer of 2024 is just the latest example of Disney expanding its present and building towards a great, big, beautiful tomorrow.

Here’s a look at some of the latest Disney Experiences developments from all around the globe:

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

On June 28, guests at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida will return to the New Orleans of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ The Princess and the Frog to float along on a musical journey in Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

The all-new attraction picks up after the events of the 2009 film, where visitors experience an adventure through the bayou as Princess Tiana prepares to host a Mardi Gras celebration.

Princess Tiana Audio-Animatronic

Guests will encounter dozens of technologically advanced Audio-Animatronic figures during their ride, including beloved characters like Princess Tiana, Louis, and Mama Odie, along with new critters and characters. New arrangements of songs from the film — and a new original tune — will serenade guests as they make their way towards a 50-foot drop.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will also open later this year at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California.

Fantasy Springs

Fantasy Springs — the eighth themed port at Tokyo DisneySea Park — welcomes guests on June 6.

It brings to life new areas inspired by three of Disney Animation’s most beloved films — Rapunzel’s Forest from 2010’s Tangled, Peter Pan’s Never Land from 1953’s Peter Pan, and Frozen Kingdom from the 2013 blockbuster, Frozen.

Fantasy Springs finds itself nestled between Tokyo DisneySea’s Lost River Delta and the Arabian Coast areas and the new port will be an entryway for guests into the magical worlds of these films.

Each will include innovative attractions, stunning restaurants, and the Tokyo DisneySea Fantasy Springs Hotel.

Setting Sail

Disney Cruise Line is looking to bring enjoyment to guests by sea and by land this year.

In June, Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, Disney Cruise Line’s newest tropical retreat opens on the island of Eleuthera, The Bahamas.

The destination celebrates the rich culture and natural beauty of The Bahamas, with signature Disney entertainment, port adventures and nature trails, a water play area and beautiful beaches, including a dedicated beach for adults. The retreat will feature a plethora of activities for the whole family to enjoy.

As Disney Cruise Line looks to add three new ships to its fleet through 2025, its latest vessel, Disney Treasure, is also set to take its maiden voyage on December 21.

Reimagined Classics

One of the very last attractions that Walt Disney personally helped develop, the Country Bear Musical Jamboree, is undergoing a refresh that will open this summer.

While the Country Bear Musical Jamboree will include call backs, the bears will sing new, reinterpreted Disney tunes in different genres of country music – like bluegrass, pop-country, Americana, rockabilly and other styles.

On May 24, Disneyland Resort guests will once again be able to enjoy the dazzling special effects of Fantasmic! as the beloved show makes its epic return.

And on June 10, EPCOT at Walt Disney World will welcome guests to CommuniCore Hall and Plaza. The Hall and Plaza are flexible multi-use event spaces that bring exhibitions, entertainment and even more culinary delights to the center of EPCOT.

Fan-Favorite Festivals and Events

And of course, there are always the seasonal festivals and events that offer a unique spin on a Disney parks visit.

  • From August 9 to October 31, families can delight in the frightful fun of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.
  • EPCOT guests can taste their way around the world at the International Food & Wine Festival, from August 29 to November 23.
  • And currently, fans can see the worlds of Pixar come alive at Pixar Fest at Disneyland. Running from April 26 through August 4, guests of all ages can celebrate with daytime parades, nighttime spectaculars, and encounters with their favorite Pixar characters.

Beyond 2024

And that’s just this year.

Going forward, Disney fans can keep an eye out for updates on DisneylandForward, which includes a planned Avatar Experience at Disneyland.

There’s also fresh expansions coming to the Magic Kingdom, exploring the Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom, more cruise ships with their own unique themes, an ongoing effort to reimagined Disneyland Paris, a newly rebuilt Space Mountain at Tokyo Disney Resort in 2027, and much more.

The Walt Disney Company announced last year that it is developing plans to accelerate and expand investment in its Parks, Experiences and Products segment to nearly double capital expenditures over the course of approximately 10 years to roughly $60 billion. So, with plenty happening across the globe now and through the next decade, Disney Experiences is as alive as Walt could’ve ever hoped it would be.

Surfing Through Memories: Mike Love and Al Jardine Reflect on Their Musical Odyssey with The Beach Boys

By Cecilia Sarantopoulos

Prepare to ride the nostalgia wave as The Beach Boys documentary hits Disney+ screens on May 24, inviting fans to embark on a fun, fun, fun journey through the legendary band’s legacy. From The Beach Boys’ trailblazing harmonies to their sun-kissed aesthetic that defined the California dream, this documentary is a celebration of the tunes—and the musicians—that have captivated generations.

The Beach Boys showcases rare footage featuring band members Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks, and Bruce Johnston, as well as musical luminaries such as Lindsey Buckingham, Janelle Monáe, Ryan Tedder, and Don Was. Directed by Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny, with a script penned by Mark Monroe, this labor of love was produced by Kenney/ Marshall and White Horse Pictures.

The Beach Boys pose for a portrait against a yellow backdrop. From left to right are Al Jardine, Mike Love, Dennis Wilson, Brian Wilson, and Carl Wilson. They are all wearing short sleeve plaid shirts, pants and white loafers. Love and Carl Wilson are sitting on two red mopeds.

During a press conference for the Disney+ documentary, Marshall spoke candidly about his personal connection to The Beach Boys’ music, recalling how it shaped his youth in Newport Beach, California—not far from Hawthorne, California, the hometown of The Beach Boys. “I was totally into surfing and surf music. I still remember the first time I listened to ‘Surfin’,’” he reminisced. For Zimny, working on the documentary was “a dream come true,” a chance to blend his love for filmmaking with his admiration for the band.

As for timing, there are several reasons why it made perfect sense to release The Beach Boys now, the panelists said. As Marshall pointed out, “Summer’s just around the corner,” making it an ideal time to fully embrace our inner Beach Boy. The legendary band also recently marked its 60th anniversary, prompting reflection and celebration of their incredible journey. “It’s miraculous that after over 60 years since we started, we’re still singing,” Love said. Given the enduring popularity of the band’s music and the ongoing renewal of their fanbase across generations, this documentary presents an opportunity to engage both longtime fans and younger audiences. “We appeal to the 8-80 [age] group,” Jardine remarked.

Brian Wilson from the band The Beach Boys is leaning on a desk in a recording studio control room. He is wearing a red and white striped t-shirt and beige pants. He gazes straight ahead, surrounded by recording equipment in the background.

From the members’ humble family beginnings to their global tours, The Beach Boys is comprehensive, focusing on the band as a group but also on their individual relationships—“what made the band work,”as Marshall put it.

“I’m super happy with the way the documentary turned out; they did an amazing job,” said Brian Wilson. “It really brought me back to those days with the boys, the fun, and the music. And, of course, those incredible harmonies.”

Exclusive: Memories from 30 Years of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast on Broadway

By Courtney Potter

It’s a tale as old as time that’s been delighting audiences around the world for three incredible, tuneful decades. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast officially opened at the Palace Theatre in New York City on April 18, 1994—bringing the iconic story and songs from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Academy Award®-winning film to life in a thrilling new way... and setting the stage, so to speak, for the entertainment juggernaut that is Disney on Broadway.

To celebrate such a momentous occasion, D23 recently sat down to chat with several people who were there from the start: Natasha Katz, the show’s lighting designer, who would go on to design for several other Disney on Broadway productions (winning the Tony®Award for Aida); director and choreographer Matt West, who’ll soon be helming a newly reimagined 30th anniversary North American tour of the show; and Susan Egan, who originated the role of Belle on the Broadway stage.

Read on for some of behind-the-gray-stuff intel... and to learn more from these and other Disney on Broadway luminaries, D23 Gold Members can check out the Spring 2024 issue of the fan club’s collectible quarterly publication, Disney twenty-three!

In an image by Jacqueline Harriet, Tony Award-winning lighting designer Natasha Katz is seen sitting at her desk. She is wearing glasses, as well as a black blazer with a black and white striped shirt underneath. A window can be seen in the background, and various design accoutrement are seen on her desk to the left.

D23: The Official Disney Fan Club: Can you tell us about some of your earliest Beauty and the Beast on Broadway memories? All of you were there, essentially, from the very beginning...

Natasha Katz (NK): There is no question that Beauty and the Beast changed my life forever. It was a turning point in my career... This was during the tenure of [then-Disney CEO] Michael Eisner and [then Disney Studios chairman] Jeffrey Katzenberg. Because they were very busy men, they weren’t there all the time—so they had an objectivity [toward] the show that was absolutely phenomenal and helped all of us, I think. That has always stayed with me and has been extremely helpful in my own way of looking at shows—to be able to find a way to separate yourself and look at it with “baby eyes,” so to speak. It was profound for me personally, that these two great producers that had come in. It was extraordinary.

Matt West (MW): [After having choreographed several projects for Disney], my team and I said, “We want to do a Broadway show. We want to take Disney to Broadway.” And [Eisner and Katzenberg] said, “Absolutely not. It’s hard to make money on Broadway.” But then they said, “You know what? You can ask us again. we might change our mind”... So we kept going back to them, and they let us start exploring some properties. At one point, Michael called and said, “What about Beauty and the Beast?” Frank Rich of The New York Times had called the 1991 film “the best musical of the season.” So the gauntlet was laid down... When they greenlit the show, it felt like we made the right steps to get to actually do Disney’s first Broadway show. And having danced on Broadway for many years and in many shows, I knew that Broadway is its own little thing—it is its own little nut to crack. So I knew there were going to be hurdles, and that Disney was a big company coming into Broadway—and that had not really been done before. The company really dealt with those hurdles brilliantly and easily and, I think, with a lot of class and style. It was one of the most thrilling moments of my life.

Susan Egan (SE): I had just come off the road from Bye Bye Birdie with Tommy Tune, and my agent said, “You should go in for Beauty and the Beast.” I said, “I don’t even know what you’re talking about. The lead role is supposed to be ‘the most beautiful girl in the village.’ That’s not me.” I had spiky red hair. If they were auditioning for Peter Pan. I’m your girl, y’know? But Belle? Not me. But my agent said, “Well, you’ve never met this casting director; you should go in because you’re new in town.” So I went, and I made them laugh. I think it made them realize there’s more than one way to do things.

After the final round of callbacks, they didn’t make us wait—they called us that night. I didn’t know what to do with myself. And this is how long ago it was—I walked up to Blockbuster Video, after stopping at the deli to get some coffee crunch ice cream—and I rented Beauty and the Beast. I hadn’t seen it yet... I found out later that every single choice was unanimous. It took them 20 minutes to cast the show, which is wild. But I mean—it had to be Gary Beach [as Lumiere]; it had to be Beth Fowler [as Mrs. Potts]; it had to be Heath Lamberts [as Cogsworth]. It  just had to be Kenny Raskin [as Lefou]. It definitely had to be Burke Moses [as Gaston] and Terrance Mann [as the Beast]. It was just one of those really crazy experiences.

D23: How has working on Beauty and the Beast—and, in later years, other Disney on Broadway productions or different projects with the company—impacted your career as a whole?

NK: I’ve traveled the entire world with Disney on Broadway! So that’s a personal thing for me that’s just been so fulfilling—to meet and work with people from different cultures, speaking different languages. Not many people get that opportunity; it’s almost like a diplomatic mission. All of that is absolutely wonderful...

I have lived in an environment with Disney on Broadway where there’s so much trust and a real sense of family—not to mention cutting-edge technology all the time, and all the different kinds of resources that Disney has—and that has definitely transferred into every other show that I do. In a sense, “nothing is impossible” is the way I think, all the time. That is, without a doubt, the consequence of what Disney on Broadway has done to my psyche, so to speak. That’s profound.

MW: Well, that’s been equally as thrilling—to have this project, my first job as a choreographer on Broadway, grow and mature along with me... All these years with this particular project, they’ve allowed me the tools to go out and explore; it’s just a joy every time I get to jump back into the ring and recreate the show. In that way, I believe we’ve been able to keep Beauty and the Beast relevant. In fact, Linda Woolverton—who wrote the original screenplay and the original Broadway libretto—and I recently went in and “wordsmithed” it again. It keeps moving with the times. We’ve made it a little more contemporary in its feeling, but it’s still Beauty and the Beast.

What’s been especially exciting, over the years, is watching Disney on Broadway—something my team and I helped launch—grow to become the most successful theater-producing unit ever. I can’t really put into words what that journey has been like for me, but it’s something that’s very near and dear to my heart.

SE: It was one of those really crazy experiences. In retrospect, everybody thought, “Well, of course Disney is [now] on Broadway”—but at the time, there was no guarantee... but something struck a chord. And that’s why I still work with Disney today; I produce for Disney now [with Disney Princess – The Concert]. It’s that Disney magic that brings people together, from all kinds of fronts. [With the shows I help produce], I’ve got a cast right now in Jakarta, in Macao; we’ve been to Saudi Arabia and Qatar—they don’t speak English, but they’re all singing “Let it Go” from Frozen!

Bosley is standing behind Egan; he is wearing a hat, glasses, and a vest, and she is wearing Belle’s signature blue dress with a white apron.

D23: Anything else you’d like to share about your experiences with Beauty and the Beast on Broadway?

NK: I think Beauty and the Beast—and Disney on Broadway in general—works so well on stage because it’s all about having a heart; that is a big part of it. And then you add everything else, which is think about all the incredible music, the incredible lyrics, the visuals; the magic of it, both for children and for grown-ups. That’s one of the things that Disney does unbelievably well—it’s just as good for grown-ups as it is for kids... All of that is a huge, huge part of it. And putting the right teams together, too. That’s the other thing—getting the right people in the room together. But in any case, I think it’s all about heart and love and kindness and working through sometimes scary situations to “get somewhere.” The loss of a parent; the loss of a sister—all those kinds of things are universal.

And there’s a familial feeling, that’s been such an endearing part of my life—as well as a metaphor for what the shows are, in the sense. That’s how it translates. Everybody working at Disney on Broadway, they’re all working from their heart to make the best show they can for the audience.

MW: These are amazing characters. They are in the animated films. To bring them to life—if the people who continue to bring these stories to life on stage are kind to the peace and honorable to the piece and make sure that people recognize these characters and their fate, we’ll have won. Because I believe that when people go to see a Disney show like Beauty and the Beast or something else that they’ve seen on screen—and that they know and they can sing all the words to—they want to feel it... They still need that Disney magic and that spark. And I think that we’re able to supply that magic feeling that no other show on Broadway has. It’s a special kind of gift that we get from the writers, and we’re able to then gift it to the audience.

SE: A common denominator is that everybody who works at Disney loves their job; there may be tough times, as with anything, but they’re fans of the product first... and Disney has a new generation of fans every five years. Beauty and the Beast is not old to the 3-year-old who’s watching the film for the first time, or to the child who’s seeing the musical for the first time ever.

Doing Beauty and the Beast was, all clichés aside, a total fairy-tale dream come true. I mean, I think the first fitting I went to, where they put that dress on me, I thought, “Just to look at the hand stitching!” I thought about the women who were sewing it—how much they cared; they would show me things the audience would never see, like in her bloomers. They had handstitched these flowers into them so that Susan, as Belle, would have something that her mother—who has died—created. They thought of everything for everybody at every level on that production; they cared so deeply about making it amazing. Nobody ever spoke down to this material. And that’s, I think, what made it great.

Beauty and the Beast can currently be seen on tour in Australia and in Tokyo—and a North American Tour will launch in summer 2025!
