Scores of first-day guests waited outside the entrance of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Ko Olina, Hawaii, before the resort opened for its first day, Monday, August 29. Goofy greeted the waiting guests and posed for photos.
During a preview of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, for various community leaders and neighbors, Tom Staggs, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, announced Disney's opening gift contributions that will support various organizations in Hawai'i'. With the focus on enriching the lives of children and supporting Hawaiian culture and conservation, Disney is supporting Boys and Girls Club of Hawai'i, Nanakuli and Wai'anae, the Ukulele Guild of Hawai'i's "Ukes for Kids" program, Ka'ala Cultural Learning Center, the Bishop Museum, Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula Competition and Awaiaulu's Ho'olaupa'i Newspaper Resources Project. Located on the picturesque shores of Ko Olina, Hawai'i, Aulani celebrates and honors the island culture, from the design and architecture, to the extensive collection of contemporary native Hawaiian art that can be found throughout the resort. The new resort is scheduled to open its doors on Monday, August 29, to Disney guests and Disney Vacation Club members from around the world giving O'ahu a whole new family vacation destination.

The children's hula group also participates in the Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula Competition, which allows children to share their achievements in hula while learning about Lili'uokalani, the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Islands, along with learning about Hawai'i's history. As part of the opening of Aulani, and Disney's community gift to Hawai'i, Aulani will support the 37th annual competition in 2012.

In celebration of its newest resort, Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Disney announced community contributions to Hawai'i during a preview event, as the resort readies to debut on Monday, Aug. 29. With a focus on organizations that enrich the lives of children and support Hawaiian culture and conservation, Disney has increased its giving to more than $300,000 since the ground blessing for the property in 2008. Traditional ho'okupu were given to the leaders of the organizations that will receive funding, offering a symbolic acknowledgement of the contribution.
