Over a century ago, Walt and Roy O. Disney rented a small studio space on Kingswell Avenue in the Los Feliz neighborhood in Los Angeles for their brand-new Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. That humble beginning would one day blossom into The Walt Disney Company, one of the world’s most iconic entertainment enterprises. Los Feliz is where The Walt Disney Company’s story truly began, and it’s only right that this historic spot was duly recognized as such. On Sunday, September 15, 2024, the Los Feliz Neighborhood City Council, including Brian Morrison and Jon Deutsch, officially dedicated the square in front of the original studio as Disney Bros. Cartoon Studio Square.
To mark the occasion, the Council threw an amazing block party and invited D23: The Official Disney Fan Club to join in the fun! Guests had plenty of photo ops to choose from, including posing with a classic shot of Walt and Roy Disney in front of the original studio. Fans could snap pics in front of a still from the legendary The Skeleton Dance short or step into Alice’s world from the Alice Comedies.
D23 had a booth where members received special goodies like a D23 Carabiner, a 15th Anniversary D23 Sorcerer Mickey Flat Magnet, and a limited-edition D23 Sorcerer Mickey Wooden Magnet for Gold Members. We also welcomed many new fans to the D23 family.
At 2:00 pm, the dedication ceremony kicked off with a musical performance by Denny Moynahan. Justin Arthur of D23 Creative & Programming, and Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman shared heartfelt remarks. Disney Legend Don Hahn and Roy Disney’s grandson, Roy Patrick Disney, each gave touching speeches about the significance of the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio and the dedication. The big moment came when the sign was revealed to roaring applause.
The block party also featured screenings of Don Hahn’s documentary, Westward Walt, hosted by the Academy Award®-winning Breakwater Studios, a showing of vintage cars, skateboarding, vintage TVs broadcasting the Alice Comedies, a DJ playing lively tunes, and a nostalgic look back at 1920s Los Feliz. Many guests embraced the theme by dressing in their best 1920s attire, making the event truly unforgettable
A big thank you to all our D23 Members for celebrating the legacies of Walt and Roy Disney and being part of this historic dedication! Feel free to visit Los Feliz for a walk through Disney history and see the brand-new signage for the Disney Bros. Cartoon Studio Square!
