D23 is excited to offer D23 Gold Members the chance to tour the historic New Amsterdam Theatre, which was built in 1903 and is the oldest operating theatre on Broadway in New York City! Take a guided tour of the beautifully restored art and architecture of this landmark Broadway theatre, and hear about its over 100-year-old history—including the iconic Disney productions it’s been home to over recent years. Plus, see special Disney on Broadway props and costumes from a variety of productions!

A young woman with curly brown hair, wearing a white sleeveless blouse with ruffled details and blue-striped pants, looks up in awe as a Disney cast member places an iconic The Lion King Broadway mask on top of her head. The mask is a golden lion head, resembling the stage adaptation’s signature puppetry. The cast member—a young man with short brown hair wearing a gray sweater over a collared shirt with a name tag and a logo on his chest—smiles warmly as he carefully positions the mask. They are both standing in a wood-paneled room with several ornate carvings on the wall, seen at the top left.

n the foreground, a person is holding up a smartphone, capturing a photo of two people dressed in costumes inspired by Mary Poppins. The woman on the left is smiling and wearing a red jacket with black trim, a black hat adorned with flowers, and holding a umbrella with a green parrot as its handle, resembling the one used by Mary Poppins. The man next to her is dressed in a checkered button-up shirt and a flat cap, holding a long chimney sweep brush, reminiscent of Bert the chimney sweep. In the background, a blue coat is draped over a seat. They are standing in a wood-paneled room with ornate carvings seen on the walls.

A breathtaking view from the stage—looking out at all the sections of seating—inside the historic New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City. The theater, known for its Beaux-Arts architecture and Art Nouveau influences, features a layout with multiple levels, including the orchestra, a mezzanine, and a balcony. Rows of lighting instruments can be seen towards the top of the image.

A different view of New York City’s New Amsterdam Theatre, this time looking at the stage from in the “house,” where the audience sits. The auditorium features rows of dark-colored seats arranged in a semicircular formation facing the stage, where a red velvet curtain with gold embroidery hangs from an ornate proscenium.

ABOUT DISNEY’S NEW AMSTERDAM THEATRE

Opened in 1903, the New Amsterdam Theatre is the oldest operating theatre on Broadway and an official New York City landmark. In 1913, it was famously home to The Ziegfeld Follies for 14 years. In 1993, The Walt Disney Company signed a 99-year lease on the theatre, beginning a two-year restoration partnership with the City of New York. Since then, it has been the home to Disney on Broadway productions including The Lion King and, currently, Aladdin.
