Pinocchio (1940) features one of Walt Disney’s “biggest” animated stars, Monstro the whale. A number of surviving sketches suggest that the animators and story artists were fascinated with this scene-stealing behemoth, and they came up with a number of gags putting the enormous mammal in humorously incongruous roles. In this drawing, Pinocchio artists couldn’t resist making Monstro the unlikely bearer of holiday greetings-—making the usually menacing mammal the largest Christmas caroler on record.
