Star Wars Rebels

Star Wars Rebels Season 3 to Debut on September 24

We’ve got another tidbit of fantastic Star Wars news: Disney XD’s critically acclaimed series Star Wars Rebels is returning for its huge third season on September 24. During the one-hour premiere event (from 8:30–9:30 p.m. ET) entitled “Steps Into Shadow,” viewers will be introduced to several new characters…

Having established a secret base on Atollon, the Ghost crew—now led by a more powerful Ezra (Taylor Gray)—strengthens the rebel fleet by acquiring new resources and recruits eager to stand against the Empire. However, the Imperial efforts to eliminate the rebellion are now being led by the coldly analytical Grand Admiral Thrawn (new addition Lars Mikkelsen), whose insights make him a threat unlike any they have faced before. Plus, Ezra and Sabine (Tiya Sircar) take on new roles and challenges as the rebels prepare for their biggest mission yet… a direct assault on the Empire!

Star Wars Rebels also stars Freddie Prinze Jr. as Kanan, Vanessa Marshall as Hera, Sam Witwer as Darth Maul, David Oyelowo (soon to be seen in Disney’s Queen of Katwe) as Agent Kallus, and—new this season—Tom Baker (Doctor Who) as Bendu. Need to catch up? Look for Star Wars Rebels Season Two on Blu-ray® and DVD beginning August 30.

New Disney Channel Show from the Creator of Lizzie McGuire

So much amazing Disney Channel news this week, right? Well, here’s more: Mere days ago, the network announced a brand-new show for kids and families. Andi Mack, created and executive produced by Terri Minsky—who also created one of Disney Channel’s defining hit series, Lizzie McGuire—begins production this fall in Salt Lake City, Utah, with its eye on a 2017 premiere. Newcomer Peyton Elizabeth Lee will star in the title role; the series will also feature Lilan Bowden (Zombie Apocalypse), Lauren Tom (Friends), and Joshua Rush (Disney’s The Lion Guard).

The show centers around Andi as she’s about to celebrate her 13th birthday. However, when her quirky older sister Bex returns home with the hope of getting her life together, Andi’s own life is turned upside-down… and she is left questioning everything she’s ever known. Look for it on Disney Channel next year!

Miss Fortune Falls

More Fun to Come at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon

There are two amazing water-based parks at Walt Disney World—Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach—and inside their gates are some of the best (not to mention most fun) ways to keep cool on your vacation. Now, a brand-new attraction is coming to Typhoon Lagoon, and it’ll be ready to ride in spring 2017.

Miss Fortune Falls is a family-style raft attraction that will takes guests on a journey through the fabled Captain Mary Oceaneer’s past. Legend has it that Captain Oceaneer, an awesome treasure-hunting heroine, traveled across the seas collecting artifacts before she became stranded at Typhoon Lagoon many years ago by a rogue storm. Guests will board rafts and ascend to the top of the attraction before plunging into a white-water expedition, where they will be able to spot some of the treasures the good captain has gathered from around the globe. With its two full minutes of adventure, Miss Fortune Falls will be among the longest attractions at both Disney water parks. Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available, me hearties!

Doc McStuffins: The Exhibit

Doc McStuffins: The Exhibit”: Open Now at World’s Largest Children’s Museum

“The doc is in,” and she’s coming to a town near you! Disney Junior is bringing its popular Doc McStuffins to communities around America in a first-ever touring museum exhibit based on the Peabody Award-winning television series! “Doc McStuffins: The Exhibit” just opened at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (the world’s largest museum for kids), and will travel to other museums around the country next year.

The exhibit is designed to model “care and compassion” for kids between the ages of 2 and 7, all through immersive activities that reinforce the importance of health and wellbeing. The bilingual (English/Spanish) interactive exhibit transports kids (and families) into Doc’s iconic backyard clinic and the McStuffins Toy Hospital, where they’ll don a white doctor’s coat, “scrub in” (learning the importance of washing hands to avoid germs), and assist on an “operation” of a toy dragon robot.

Keep your eyes peeled for more info on the exhibit’s travels as we head into 2017.

Fierce Friends: Our Six Favorite Dragons in Disney Parks

By Courtney Potter

Dragons. Mythological creatures that can inspire both terror and trust… part reptile, part serpent, part bird, all legendary. The word “dragon” first entered the English language in the 13th century, but the very idea of this creature has its roots in ancient civilizations like Mesopotamia—after which, it literally spread around the world. So its no wonder that Walt Disney was inspired to include both fearsome and friendly dragons in some of his most iconic works, including 1941’s The Reluctant Dragon and 1959’s Sleeping Beauty. Later, those dragons—and many others!—have materialized at Disney Parks around the globe… inside attractions, and even during parades and nighttime spectaculars.

Now that Disney’s latest fire-breather (Pete’s Dragon, starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Redford) is heading to theaters, we thought we’d take a look at some of our favorite dragons seen at Disney Parks. There were almost too many to choose from, so we narrowed our list down to a select few… did your fave make the cut?

Figment

Figment in Journey Into Imagination With Figment (Epcot)
Obviously, we couldn’t put together this list without including a character who’s become a true “fan favorite” over the years: adorable Figment from Epcot’s Journey Into Imagination! In the original version of the ride, the Dreamfinder teaches the mischievous little dragon how to put his own creativity to good use. Nowadays, Figment joins Dr. Nigel Channing (Eric Idle) as he explains how the five senses capture the imagination.

Maleficent from Fantasmic!

Fantasmic!’s Maleficent (Disneyland)
Much like Figment’s adventures, the nighttime spectacular Fantasmic! takes us into the über-colorful imagination of Mickey Mouse. At every turn, Disney villains aim to turn Mickey’s dreams into nightmares; in the show’s penultimate scene, Maleficent appears in gigantic fire-breathing dragon form… and is vanquished by our hero! We’re quite excited that this particular dragon will be returning to Disneyland Park soon—but even now, she can be seen at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Saint George and the Dragon Statue in the Germany Pavilion

Saint George and the Dragon Statue in the Germany Pavilion (Epcot)
This is one of the more unique instances of a dragon inside a Disney Park! You can find this beautiful statue at the Germany pavilion inside Epcot; inspired by the “Saint George and the Dragon” statue in the medieval Bavarian town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, it’s based on a legend in which a Roman-soldier-turned-Christian-matyr saves a small town by vanquishing a lake-bound dragon. The more you know!

Elliott in the Main Street Electrical Parade

Elliott in the Main Street Electrical Parade (Magic Kingdom Park)
This parade has delighted Disney Park guests since it first traveled its Main Street, U.S.A. route more than four decades ago. One of its more memorable floats? Why, Elliott from the original 1977 Pete’s Dragon, of course! The jaw-droppingly illuminated pink-winged creature weighs more than 5,600 pounds; is 16 feet tall and more than 10 feet wide; and is a whopping 38 feet long. He can also blow smoke through his nose… and he can even “disappear”. Be sure to look for Elliott when the Main Street Electrical Parade returns for a limited time to Disneyland Park beginning early next year!

La Tanière du Dragon in Sleeping Beauty Castle

La Tanière du Dragon (Disneyland Paris)
Underneath Sleeping Beauty Castle, in a dark and ominous dungeon, lies a monstrous—albeit beautiful—creature… Once the ruler of the skies, this defeated dragon is chained against jagged rocks; sure, it could be sleeping, but tread carefully. One wrong move might lead to a big surprise! Known as one of the most intricate and lifelike animatronic figures in Disney history (and seen exclusively at Disneyland Paris), this dragon awoke from a special two-month refurbishment in 2012.

Maleficent in Disney’s Festival of Fantasy Parade

Maleficent in Disney’s Festival of Fantasy Parade (Magic Kingdom Park)
This daytime parade at Magic Kingdom Park boasts one of our favorite dragon floats ever! Maleficent—as her fire-breathing, clockwork dragon alter ego—engages in battle with Prince Phillip and his mighty Sword of Truth. The rest of the parade is pretty spectacular, too; paying homage to the magic of Fantasyland and its many inhabitants, it features original music and performers on stilts and swings!

Our Hearts Burn For These Unforgettable Disney Dragons

By D23 Team

Dragons have always had a special place in our imaginations. With iconic features such as long necks, sharp claws, and leathery wings, they can be found in stories and art from cultures around the world—always with a unique style, but still undeniably dragons. In honor of Pete’s Dragon, opening in theaters on August 12, we’re taking a look at our favorite Disney dragons. Did yours make our list? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter.

Elliott from Pete's Dragon 1977

Elliott, Pete’s Dragon (1977)
Let’s see—head of a camel? Check! Neck of a crocodile? Check! Ears of a cow? Check again! Looks like this is Elliott—the beloved and lovable dragon from the classic Disney film Pete’s Dragon. Whether he’s cooking apples with his fire breath or scaring away the Gogans with his roar, he’s always looking out for little Pete. But unlike most dragons who look ferocious, Elliott has a charm that just makes you want to snuggle him forever! If you ever find yourself with a lovable dragon as your guardian, make sure to hang on tight, because “It’s not easy to find someone who cares. It’s not easy to find magic in pairs.”

Mushu from Mulan

Mushu, Mulan (1998)
“The powerful, the pleasurable, the indestructible Mushu.” With an introduction like that, how can Mushu not be one of our favorites? In the Disney animated film Mulan, this diminutive dragon aims to redeem himself as a Fa Family guardian by helping Mulan in her crusade. Whether he’s being funny, slinging one of his classic one liners—“I’m travel-size for your convenience.”— or being heroic, riding a rocket to help defeat Shan Yu, Mushu proves to be a Disney dragon with true staying power. Just remember one thing: He’s a “DRAGON, not lizard. I don’t do that tongue thing.”

The Reluctant Dragon

The Reluctant Dragon, The Reluctant Dragon (1941)
A shy dragon that refuses to fight and prefers to recite poetry? That’s certainly not the typical dragon. The Reluctant Dragon—from the 1941 film of the same name—may be a bit eccentric, but he manages to mesmerize us with his exquisite prose. In the film, Sir Giles and the Boy try to get him to fight, but he refuses, stating, “It doesn’t agree with me.” After an impromptu poetry session—including the witty ode “To an Upside-down Cake”—they all hatch a plan to put on a mock fight that will preserve the heroism of Sir Giles and the ferociousness of the dragon in the eyes of the villagers. In the end it appears to the villagers that Sir Giles has reformed the ferocious dragon and the dragon recites to the crowd, “I promise not to rant or roar, and scourge the countryside anymore!”

Maleficent as a dragon from Sleeping Beauty

Maleficent, Sleeping Beauty (1959)
While most Disney dragons fight the notion that dragons are evil, vicious creatures, there are a few on our list who lack good intentions… It almost makes sense that the “mistress of all evil” would be able to turn herself into a fire-breathing dragon, doesn’t it? This fan-favorite villain uses her powers to transform into a larger-than-life dragon in an attempt to defeat the brave and charming Prince Phillip. But, as in most Disney stories, good defeats evil, and Maleficent’s dragon tale ends.

Madam Mim, The Sword and the Stone

Madam Mim, The Sword and the Stone (1963)
Maleficent isn’t the only Disney character with transformative powers! The magnificent, marvelous, mad, mad, mad, mad Madam Mim is also fond of shape-shifting. From a beautiful maiden with long purple hair, to a frightening dragon who’s escaped from its lair, Madam Mim battles Merlin as a powerful purple dragon—before coming down with a debilitating case of the pox. If we’ve learned anything from Madam Mim and Maleficent, it’s that transforming into a dragon usually doesn’t end in “happily ever after.”

Nessie

Nessie, The Ballad of Nessie (2011)
Lucky for our friend Nessie, her story does have a happy ending! In the 2011 short, The Ballad of Nessie, this lovable sea dragon is forced out of her home as it is transformed from a quiet sanctuary into a miniature golf course. As Nessie scours the countryside looking for a new space to swim, she—and her companion MacQuack, a rubber duck—become increasingly discouraged with the lack of lakes. After days and days of crying, Nessie realizes her crocodile tears have created a large lake, and she finally has her “loch sweet loch.”

Elliot from Pete's Dragon 2016

Elliot, Pete’s Dragon (2016)
We couldn’t round up our favorite dragons without including Elliot, from Pete’s Dragon. While Elliot may seem ferocious—he is, after all, a 24-foot-tall fire-breathing dragon—all Pete’s furry friend wants is a family. We can’t wait to meet Elliot when Pete’s Dragon debuts on August 12!

Flying Back in Time with Disneyland’s Flying Saucers

By Nicole Nalty

On August 6, 1961, guests began to fly into the future with Walt Disney’s latest attraction, the Flying Saucers. Bringing life to a relatively quiet Tomorrowland, the Flying Saucers were the bumper cars of the future—the saucers hovered above the ground thanks to bursts of air shooting through the attraction’s floor. While this attraction floated away in 1966, take a look at a few vintage images, courtesy of the Walt Disney Archives, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Flying Saucers.

Flying Saucers

Each saucer fit one adult, or two children.

Flying Saucers

The attraction’s floor was equipped with four 100-horsepower motors, blowing more than 300,000 cubic feet of air per minute!

Flying Saucers

The attraction covered 16,000 square feet in Tomorrowland and could hold a maximum of 32 saucers.

Flying Saucers

More than 5 million guests took flight in Disneyland’s Flying Saucers—that’s almost 1 million guests per year!

The Captivating Concept Art of Condorman

By D23 Team

It’s hard to believe that more than three decades have passed since comic book artist Woody Wilkins (played by actor Michael Crawford) became his own super hero creation and journeyed across Europe and the Middle East in a series of comic and high-speed chases. Condorman, released in the United States on August 7, 1981, presented monumental challenges for filmmakers—from rigged explosions and crashes to aerial work at the Matterhorn and off the Eiffel Tower. Perhaps as stunning, however, is the production and publicity artwork created to help envision and communicate the spirit of the film—an aesthetic that remains wildly popular among pop culture enthusiasts.

In honor of the film’s 35th anniversary, we present a collection of rare artwork sure to excite any fan of Condorman, courtesy of the Walt Disney Archives.

D23 Fab Five: Disney Ambassadors Share Their Disney Favorites

By Beth Deitchman

Since 1965, when Walt Disney himself selected the first Disney Ambassador—Julie Reihm Casaletto, who was inducted as a Disney Legend at D23 Expo 2015—these “Emissaries of Goodwill” have acted as official hosts to Resort guests and are frequently official spokespeople for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. For someone who loves Disney, it kind of sounds like the most amazing job in the world, doesn’t it?

We caught up with the four unbelievably knowledgeable 2015–16 Ambassadors for Disneyland Resort and for Walt Disney Resort and asked them to tell us their “Fab 5s.” All had a hard time narrowing their selections to a mere five, but take a look at their answers and see how many of their Disney favorites happen to be your favorites, too!

Jessica Bernard

Jessica Bernard, Disneyland Resort:

“As Walt Disney proclaimed on Disneyland’s opening day, Disneyland is and always will be a source of joy, hope, and inspiration to all the world. I believe that The Walt Disney Company—and everything we represent—continues to inspire. I’ve found inspiration in so many Disney things that it’s nearly impossible to choose just five!  But, here goes with my five fabulous favorites:

Belle

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie. I saw it no less than 10 times in the movie theater when I was a kid, and I can still recite almost every line. I absolutely love what Belle represents. She is a strong, courageous, kind, fearless, loyal, and intelligent woman; and I think she’s an excellent role model—as are the subsequent Disney princesses!

Main Street Cinema is one of my go-to spots in Disneyland. In fact, a trip to Disneyland just doesn’t seem complete without paying a visit and taking a step back in time. My husband and I especially love to watch Mickey’s Polo Team. It’s a nice reprieve from the Southern California heat, and it’s a nice reminder of where it all started!

Lobster nachos from the Cove Bar

“I’m not sure there’s a better way to spend a beautiful afternoon than to enjoy some delicious lobster nachos and an ice-cold drink at the Cove Bar while overlooking Paradise Bay lagoon in Disney California Adventure Park. My sister visited from Oregon last month, and she’s still talking about these nachos!

“I’ve found inspiration in so many Disney things that it’s nearly impossible to choose just five!”—Jessica Bernard, Disneyland Resort Ambassador

“Before Cars Land opened, I would have said Pirates of the Caribbean. Now I would be remiss if I didn’t admit that Radiator Springs Racers has driven its way to the No. 1 spot. I think it’s a perfect attraction! You begin with the beautiful views of Ornament Valley, then there’s all you could hope for in a dark ride, and then you get a thrilling high-speed race! I’m always up for a cruise through Radiator Springs.

“For more than 60 years, the Disneyland Band has been playing the “Happiest Music on Earth!” I think there’s something wonderfully nostalgic about seeing and hearing the grandeur of the Band throughout the park. My favorite show is the Band’s Frontierland set in front of the Golden Horseshoe. Take my word for it, and check it out!”

Caitlin Busscher

Caitlin Busscher, Walt Disney World Resort

“When I was a child, visiting Walt Disney World was truly a place of magic and escape. The memories I created while on vacation with my family are some of my most vivid, and I was inspired to move to Florida in order to become part of the magic. As Ambassador, it is an honor to represent the almost 75,000 cast members who create these unforgettable memories for our guests every day.

“The Walt Disney Company is known for their immersive experiences, and I love feeling transported to other worlds! Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a favorite for both my husband and myself—the authentic flavors at Harambe Market, the rhythmic music of the Burudika street performers, and Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction all combine to make you feel as though you are in Africa. And I love talking to the cultural representative cast members from all across the continent who serve as Ambassadors of their country! They are always happy to share stories about their culture. We just returned from our own trip to Africa, and can say with authority that the Imagineers did a fantastic job researching every detail—and their journals and artifacts from their travels can even be seen at the new Tiffins restaurant!

Expedition Everest queue start

“Since I consider myself a bit of a thrill seeker, Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom will always be one of my favorite attractions. Not only are the drops surprising, but the attraction has an incredible story and the theming is superb!

“Walt Disney World has no shortage of nighttime spectaculars, so it’s hard to pick a favorite. But one that I love is IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth at Epcot. The fireworks themselves are fantastic, but I also love the concept that there is hope for the future and that all nations can be united. The song at the end, ‘We Go On’, always makes me cry!

“I love that the magic of Disney can connect to our guests and cast members in different ways. Whether it’s a memory, or a character, or a resort, or a favorite restaurant, there is something for everyone. For me, music truly resonates. And Disney has a way of creating music that is exceptionally moving. I love all of the musical groups and live shows across property, but if I had to pick one that really gave me goose bumps and made me cry, it would have to be The Voices of Liberty in The American Adventure pavilion at Epcot. I always arrive early to get a good spot on the floor where the acoustics are best, and when they sing ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’, to me it is the essence of Disney and my childhood. Their voices are so beautiful, I can’t help but tear up every time.

Darth Vader - Star Wars Weekends

“Also, Star Wars. I’m a huge Star Wars fan, so I am thrilled to see it have such a presence at Disney’s Hollywood Studios—especially since I’m such a fan of the dark side! Seeing Captain Phasma march down the street with her garrison of Storm Troopers is very impressive.”

Allie Kawamoto

Allie Kawamoto, Disneyland Resort

“I was fortunate to grow up in Southern California, so visiting the Disneyland Resort was an annual tradition. I’ve created lots of wonderful memories throughout the years, but there are certain places that I frequent and recommend to friends and family that are visiting:

“Favorite Snack: Chicken or Beef Nachos from White Water Snacks at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa! The chips are nice and sturdy to scoop up all of the delicious toppings. The ambiance on the patio is very relaxing, and you can gaze into Disney California Adventure while enjoying your nachos. Tip: You can order them with half chicken and half beef.

Ghirardelli

“Favorite Dessert: You can’t go wrong with a visit to Ghirardelli Soda Fountain. Upon entering you’re greeted with a smile and a sample of chocolate. My husband and I usually share the Intense Dark Espresso Escape sundae, which is very rich and gives us a little caffeine kick.

“Favorite Attraction: My favorite attraction is Toy Story Midway Mania! I love how immersive and interactive the attraction is. Plus, I may be slightly competitive and I’m still trying to hit all of the secret targets.

Turtle Talk with Crush

“Favorite Afternoon Rest Stop: The Animation Building in Disney California Adventure is a treasure! It’s a great spot to get out of the sun and relax while watching clips from your favorite Disney movies. I also love Turtle Talk with Crush! With all of the newly added friends from Finding Dory, you can see the show countless times and have different experiences. I am also a big fan of the Animation Academy. Trying to sketch my favorite characters makes me extra appreciative of the talented artists who bring our movies to life. Plus, you get a fun souvenir when you’re done! Tip: Ask the cast in Off the Page for a rubber band so you can roll up your art and keep it safe.

“Favorite Entertainment Offering: Paint the Night is my favorite 60th Anniversary show. It brings back memories of being a child and watching the Main Street Electrical Parade with my family. I’ve seen Paint the Night several times and constantly notice different details in the characters and costumes. It’s an absolute must-see and fun way to cap off the evening! When it’s over, you’ll ask yourself, ‘When can we do this again?’”

Nathaniel Palma

Nathaniel Palma, Walt Disney World Resort

“Just like D23 Members are huge Disney fans, so am I. I love everything about Disney and it’s such an honor to continue Walt’s legacy by becoming a Disney Ambassador and represent the cast members who bring Walt Disney World to life along with all of the other wonderful things that the Company does.

“When it comes to my favorites, I always like to start with my favorite character and I have two: Alice in Wonderland and Pinocchio. That’s because I love their personality, they’re classic characters, and I feel like if you combine the two, you get me! I think that’s why we love the Disney characters so much, because we can relate to them.

Splash Mountain at Magic Kingdom

“My favorite attraction is going to have to be Splash Mountain because I have a huge affinity for the south, and I just love going to the tales of Br’er Rabbit. I thought Splash Mountain was such a creative way for Imagineers to take an attraction that at other theme parks might just be going up and then going down and getting wet, but really immersing guests into the storyline as they’re getting captured by Br’er Fox and getting flung into the briar patch. I thought it was just incredible, and the attraction is so much fun.

A favorite nighttime show is Fantasmic! and the reason why I love it is not only because of the beautiful storyline, the characters, and the stage. Sometimes I like to sit all the way in the front, and when Mickey comes out at the very top of the mountain, instead of looking at Mickey I look back and I see that stadium of thousands of guests—and we have guests who are young; who are more seasoned; who have been here for the first time, for hundreds of times; we have our Disney fans; we have guests from all around the world. But that moment when Mickey comes out, we all speak the same language, the language of Disney and what Mickey represents—that essence of happiness, the essence of Walt Disney. People just go crazy and I burst into tears.

Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland would be my favorite movie. It’s the movie’s 65th anniversary—so go, Alice! I just love how whimsical and crazy it is.

Churros are my favorite snack. There’s something about Disney churros that you don’t get anywhere else, and every time that I come to a Disney park—whether it’s here or the Disneyland Resort (which, I think, has the best churros ever!)—I have to have a churro.

Ghirardelli Chocolate Chip Cookies

How to Make a Beauty Fall in Love with a Beast

By William Keck

One of the greatest challenges facing the creative team behind Beauty and the Beast was convincing their audience that a lovely young French maiden with her head buried in books could fall in love with a monstrous buffalo-headed creature sporting a lion’s mane, wolf’s tail and the tusks of a boar.

Not to mention making the story appropriate viewing for children.

Alan Menken

The daunting task required the invention of scenarios that allowed Belle to see beyond the physical into the soul of a cursed young man paying dearly for crimes he committed as a boy. “Basically, it’s a story of the Beast and Belle having dinner every night,” notes the film’s Oscar®-winning composer Alan Menken, now scoring Disney’s live-action Beauty and Beast remake set for release in March 2017. “So there’s a lot of story invention that had to happen in order for it to really come to life.”

“They’re up against incredible odds,” adds former Disney Feature Animation President Tom Schumacher, now president & producer, Disney Theatrical Group. “And I think that’s the story’s romance. [She] doesn’t like him to begin with, but [comes to] see through why he behaves like he behaves. And they bond.”

Close your eyes and ask yourself, ‘When is the moment we know for sure that Belle has fallen in love with Beast?’

Paige O'Hara

For Paige O’Hara, the voice of Belle, it’s the “Something There” sequence out in the snow, when Belle watches Beast awkwardly attempting to rediscover his lost innocence by offering seed to the birds that have gathered on his castle grounds.

Beauty and the Beast

“Birds come on his hand,” O’Hara says. “They’re afraid of him at first. And Belle touches him and they look at each other and she runs behind the tree. That’s the moment that this young woman realizes she’s falling in love. And that’s really the turning point in the film. They’d never had a romantic relationship; never had that touch. All these emotions are happening to her because, how could [she] be falling in love with the Beast? But [she] is.”

Beauty and the Beast

Before long, the two are cuddling in front of a burning fire about to read a book. Oh yes, there’s something there that wasn’t there before.

Beauty and the Beast

By the time Belle loops her delicate hand under the Beast’s arm as they make their way down the grand staircase for a romantic evening of dinner and dancing, there’s no doubting the deep feelings these two have developed for one another. Helping the animators set the mood was a revolutionary computer animation system created for the studio by Pixar. Recalls the film’s producer, Don Hahn: “[When] Belle and Beast are dancing, we wanted to create an environment so you felt like the camera was kind of celebrating them falling in love as much as the animation was.”

Beauty and the Beast

“The biggest thing in Beauty that you think of is, of course, that ballroom sequence,” Schumacher adds. “At the time it was so breathtaking that we could do that.”

Sealing the deal was the stirring title song sung to perfection by Angela Lansbury. “She sang, you know, ‘Tale as old as time…’,” remembers Hahn of the recording session. “She did it in one take. Thank God for Angela, because she knew how to perform that song.” The love ballad went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song, and the pop version recorded by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson topped charts around the globe, selling over a million copies worldwide and winning Dion and Bryson a Grammy®.

“I think the main legacy of Beauty and the Beast is romantic love, but also just love in general,” offers Menken. “The love of Mrs. Potts and Chip. The love of these enchanted objects that, although the Beast is tortured, remain with him. The love of Belle and her father.”

Beauty and the Beast

But most profoundly, the love a Beauty discovered for her Beast.

Beauty and the Beast 25th Anniversary Edition will be available on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere September 6 and on Blu-ray September 20.

5 Etiquette Rules from Queen Clarisse Renaldi

By Nicole Nalty

When Mia Thermopolis finds out she’s a princess (Shut. Up!) the shy teenager is taken aback, and rightfully so! Being a princess requires a certain skill set, but luckily, Mia has a practically perfect teacher—her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, played by Disney Legend Julie Andrews. In honor of the 15th anniversary of The Princess Diaries, we’ve pulled together some of our favorite “Clarisse-isms” to help you feel like royalty every day. And make sure to check out the Disney Gif app, for Apple and Android, for more moments from The Princess Diaries and your other favorite Disney films.

“When walking in a crowd, one is under scrutiny all the time.”
It’s always a good idea to put your best foot forward—both literally and figuratively. And never, ever, ‘shlump.’

“We never rush, we hasten.”
Queen Clarisse is always cool under pressure. Next time you’re running late to class, or stuck in traffic on the way to work, remember to hasten, not rush. And if that doesn’t work…

“The Queen is never late, everybody else is simply early.”
Try this excuse next time you’re a few minutes late. See how it goes. Let us know.

“And so you wave to them, and acknowledge them gracefully.”
While you may not need to thank everyone for being here today, you should always be friendly to everyone you meet!

“A princess never chases a chicken.”
Honestly, this is just sound advice—royalty or not.

Elena of Avalor

Disney Channel Teams with Girl Scouts of the USA to Inspire Girls

Hot on the heels of the big recent Elena of Avalor debut comes some very special news: Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) and Disney Channel are teaming up to inspire girls and their families to practice leadership, using Disney’s newest princess as motivation!

The collaboration brings GSUSA’s focus on leading like a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™, the Girl Scout way, and Disney Channel’s newest animated TV series into action with the debut of The Elena of Avalor Leadership Guide by Girl Scouts and Disney Channel. Available in English and Spanish beginning August 2, the guide showcases leadership activities and conversations parents and other caregivers can have with their preschool through fifth-grade girls, to boost their everyday leadership skills and prepare them to create the amazing future they imagine.

Also debuting is the inaugural “Elena of Avalor—Scepter of Light Award,” which will be presented to two Girl Scout Gold Award recipients; the Gold Award is the highest recognition a Girl Scout can earn, with recipients demonstrating extraordinary leadership through “Take Action projects” and exemplifying compassion, critical thinking, collaboration, and courage—qualities that Elena of Avalor herself often models. Award recipients will participate in events including Elena’s Royal Debut at Walt Disney World this August, and a GSUSA event in Chicago in the fall.

The Muppets

The Muppets Bring an All-New Show to Walt Disney World—This Fall!

“It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights!” As lovers of all things Muppet, we’re particularly excited to announce that the Muppets are bringing a brand-new live show to Walt Disney World! The Muppets Present… Great Moments in American History will delight guests at Magic Kingdom park, outside The Hall of Presidents, starting this fall.

The extremely patriotic Sam Eagle, an American eagle forever trying to set a high moral standard for the Muppets, will join Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, The Great Gonzo, and James Jefferson—town crier of Liberty Square—as they gather to present historical tales in truly hysterical fashion… From the midnight ride of Paul Revere, to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Muppets will appear throughout the day to share their own unique take on the founding fathers and the birth of the United States of America. The show will, of course, feature plenty of wacky Muppets humor—as well as an original song, written just for this show.

Look for The Muppets Present… Great Moments in American History beginning this October!
