Scoundrel Alert: See the Brand-New Trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story!

If you haven’t yet seen the clip, you positively must check it out, above. We’ll wait…

In related news, the movie was recently given a very special honor: It’s been selected to screen at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival (in Official Selection and Out of Competition) during the festival’s run in mid-May.

Directed by Ron Howard, Solo: A Star Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Joonas Suotamo, and Paul Bettany. Look for it in a cineplex near you on May 25!

Frozen on Broadway Records Cast Album… and Breaks More Records!

Recording the cast album is a “rite of passage” for any new Broadway show—and now, Disney Theatricals’ Frozen will have its songs (and stars) preserved for all musical-theater eternity! The company of Frozen, led by theatre vets Caissie Levy as Elsa and Patti Murin as Anna, is “laying down tracks” (like the kids say) as we speak for the show’s Original Broadway Cast Recording, to be released by Walt Disney Records later this spring. The album is produced by Frozen songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, as well as Stephen Oremus, Dave Metzger, and Chris Montan.

Frozen’s already-large pit orchestra of 21 instruments will be expanded even further for the cast recording; a whopping 44 musicians, including a string section 22 strong, will bring the show’s tuneful score to life. Look for it at your favorite brick-and-mortar or online music store soon.

But that’s not the only Frozen news that’s fit to News-Brief: The show has broken the house record at New York City’s St. James Theatre for the second week in a row, for the week ending April 8—with an amazing gross of almost $2.3 million on eight performances. Chill-tastic congrats to all involved!

T.O.T.S.—A Bundle of Joy from Disney Junior

Storks and babies are an adorable pairing that has warmed the heart for eons… and Disney Junior today announced an adorable take on this “special delivery,” the new original animated series T.O.T.S. The heartfelt animated comedy follows the hilarious adventures of best friends Pip and Freddy, a tenacious penguin and a kind-hearted flamingo, who are the only non-stork delivery birds in-training at Tiny Ones Transfer Service (T.O.T.S.). As new members of the esteemed team, these junior flyers must take tender care in transferring baby animals—kittens, cubs, calves, bunnies, puppies, and joeys among them—from the nursery to their forever families around the globe. Together, they will learn how to nurture and care for the babies and use creative thinking and problem solving to model for young viewers that there isn’t just one way to achieve a goal. Travis Braun (Disney Junior’s Vampirina and Disney Channel’s upcoming series Fast Layne) created the new series and serves as co-executive producer. Keep an eye out for more details as T.O.T.S.’ 2019 debut approaches.

New Disney•Pixar Short and an ESPN+ Update—Plus More in News Briefs

Disney•Pixar readies its latest short film, and ESPN+ sets a launch date… Read more, along with other news from around Disney, in this week’s news briefs!

Adorable New Disney•Pixar Short Debuting with Incredibles 2

There’s something incredible-y cute coming with Incredibles 2 when it races into a cineplex near you this summer… it’s the latest short film from Disney•Pixar!

The seven-and-a-half-minute short is called Bao, and it is a culinary fable about a Chinese-Canadian woman suffering from a bout of “empty nest”-related depression. She gets a second shot at motherhood when, magically, one of her handmade dumplings comes to life!

Storyboard artist Domee Shi becomes Disney•Pixar’s first female short director in the studio’s history with Bao, and she was inspired to tell a story flavored by her upbringing as the only child to Chinese immigrants. “Often times it felt like my mom would treat me like a precious little dumpling, wanting to make sure I was safe, that I didn’t go out late, all that stuff,” Shi recently told Entertainment Weekly. “I just wanted to create this magical, modern-day fairy tale, kind of like a Chinese Gingerbread Man story. The word ‘bao’ actually means two things in Chinese: Said one way, it means steamed bun. Said another, it means something precious. A treasure.”

Look for Bao—in front of the latest adventures of Elastigirl, Mr. Incredible, and family—in theaters in June 15!

A Chill Has Come Over Broadway: Frozen Breaks Records

Disney Theatrical’s latest production, Frozen, has already made history! In its first full week of performances (since officially opening on Broadway on March 22), the show broke the “house record” at New York City’s St. James Theatre for the week ending April 1—with a whopping gross of more than $2 million on just eight performances. Incredibly, this marks the very first time a production has broken the eight-performance “house record” of $1.6 million established back in January 2004 by the smash hit The Producers

Frozen is the first—and only—incarnation of the frosty tale that expands upon and deepens its unforgettable plot and heartwarming themes through new songs and story material from the film’s creators; in fact, this new stage production features more than twice as much music as the film! Four of the 12 new songs written for the musical are available now at FrozenTheMusical.com/music and wherever music is streamed or sold.

Congratulations to the entire company of Frozen!

Disneyland Paris Celebrates 25th Anniversary with New Festival

Disneyland Paris has been delighting guests from around the world for a fantastical 25 years—and to commemorate the occasion, beginning March 31 and continuing through May 31, a plethora of pirates and princesses will take over Disneyland Park.

All fairy tales start with the words, “Once upon a time”… and this spring, how the rest unfolds is up to Disneyland Paris guests. During “The Festival of Pirates and Princesses,” guests can choose their side—creating their very own adventure story; you can choose to be one, or even decide to be both!

Guests will get to experience Disney Pirate or Princess: Make your Choice!, an all-new interactive parade featuring more than 85 performers. “This is the first time we have ever immersed our guests so fully in an outdoor show,” says director Christophe Leclercq. “They decide on their team, and they experience a different story depending on the choice they make.” The two worlds will merge several times a day; setting off from opposite ends of the Parade route, both the “Pirates” float and “Disney Princesses” float will stop halfway and immerse guests in a musical celebration. Then, the floats will head to Central Plaza where they’ll come together for tons of memorable guest interaction…

“The Festival of Pirates and Princesses” is one of several highlights celebrating Disneyland Paris’ 25th Anniversary, which is coming to a close this September.

We’re Nuts Over These Classic Appearances by Chip and Dale

By Megan Deppe

Chip and Dale have been part of our Disney experience for 75 years. As they’ve made life more difficult for Donald and Pluto, they’ve made ours even more fun, thanks to their jokes and pranks. To celebrate the many years of joy they’ve given us, we’ve done our best to select some of our favorite film and TV appearances by the chipmunk chums that truly sum up everything great about the playful pals.

chip and dale

1. Private Pluto (1943)
Our first introduction to the pair came in 1943 when, very creatively, they decided to use an army’s cannon to help crack their nuts. It was our first peek into how much mischief these troublemakers could make (as well as how ingenious they are), and Pluto found the “playmates” who would be part of his cartoons for years to come. The chipmunks were still unnamed in their inaugural appearance—it would be several years before they were given their distinct monikers, as well as their unique physical characteristics.

chip and dale

2. Chip ’n’ Dale Rescue Rangers (1989)
Chip and Dale’s cartoon short antics led to the pair starring in their own TV show! Chip and Dale solved crimes too “small” for the police to handle alongside their friends Gadget, Monterey Jack, and Zipper. Chip’s sense of leadership and Dale’s laid-back nature brought fun to their fans and fleshed out their characters for more fun onscreen.

3. Space Walkies (2014)
It would appear that Pluto can never escape the torment of those two little chipmunks—even in outer space! When he decides to take a bathroom break in space, Chip and Dale (appearing for the first time in Disney Channel’s Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts) appear in a spaceship that Mickey tries to use as a Frisbee and Pluto is compelled to chase the pair around the solar system.

4. Kingdom Hearts (2002)
When Disney characters took a trip into the world of Kingdom Hearts, you didn’t think this duo would be left behind, did you? Chip and Dale serve under King Mickey as royal engineers, helping the main character, Sora (and the gamer!), by creating their Gummi ship to travel to different worlds and take down the Heartless.

chip and dale

5. Two Chips and a Miss (1952)
These two come as pair, sure, but even Chip and Dale have disagreements sometimes. In this case, they both fell head over heels for the beautiful singer Clarice, and their competition for her affection turns into a great song for all three of them. They both get a kiss, and harmony is restored between the bosom buddies.

chip and dale

6. Pluto’s Christmas Tree (1952)
In an especially adorable appearance, Chip and Dale make their way into Mickey’s house by way of a Christmas tree that the chipmunks take shelter in. The pair is ecstatic to find themselves surrounded by twinkling lights and ornaments (not to mention candy canes!), but Pluto wants them out. Mickey reminds his best pal that it’s Christmas and Chip and Dale deserve to be warm and happy around the Christmas tree, too.

chip and dale

7. Chicken in the Rough (1951)
Chip and Dale’s first solo cartoon is a special moment for them. There’s no Mickey, Donald, or Pluto—it’s all about these two friends and their adventures in the farmyard. A hen takes Dale under his wing—literally—the chipmunk runs in terror from a rooster, all to Chip’s amusement. Both chipmunks learn the important difference between nuts and eggs in this charming short.

chip and dale

8. Mickey and the Roadster Racers (2017)
Nothing can keep Chip and Dale out of the pit. Whether Mickey needs a little bit of work done in the garage, obstacle courses need to be set up, or a special car needs to be built for their friend Cuckoo-Loca, you can bet that these two chipmunks will do their best to get the wheels on the road.

chip and dale

9. Chip an’ Dale (1947)
Throughout the years, many of Chip and Dale’s pranks have been directed toward one beloved bird with a very short fuse: Donald Duck. This film—their first outing with Donald—also marked the first time that the pair were named and given distinct personalities and looks. When Donald chops down the tree where they’ve been storing their nuts for the winter, Chip an’ Dale (as they were called in this short) do their best to recover their precious supply from him. Each has met their match, and the lifelong rivalry that ensues between the duck and the chipmunks is a win for us all.

10. Chip ’n Dale’s Nutty Tales (2017)
These made-for-TV shorts were created just for the tiny duo and set in the world of Mickey and the Roadster Racers. Chip ’n Dale’s Nutty Tales follows the pair as they try to bake muffins, fly kites, and swim in birdbaths, occasionally creating trouble for Mickey and friends but always having fun along the way.

7 Reasons Why You’ll Absolutely Love Pixar Fest

By Courtney Potter

They’re some of the most beloved films—and treasured characters—in silver-screen history, making us laugh, reminding us of home, and warming our hearts like a colorful, cozy blanket. Since unboxing Toy Story in 1995, Disney•Pixar has created stories and personalities that have charmed fans the world over—and now, for the first time ever, the legendary animation studio is getting the full Disney Parks celebratory treatment!

Pixar Fest, the biggest Pixar bash ever to come to Disney Parks, will bring guests young and old together to “celebrate friendship and beyond”—and it’s all kicking off on April 13 at the Disneyland Resort. Recently, D23 was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at all the incredible Pixar hijinks coming to the Fest; from special food offerings to the return of favorite parades (with some extra-special surprises), and even a brand-new fireworks spectacular, there’s something for every Pixar fan! (And that’s on top of the amazing Pixar fun that already exists at the Resort, like Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters at Disneyland park and Toy Story Midway Mania! at Disney California Adventure park.) Read on for the seven things you absolutely cannot miss.

Together Forever fireworks

1. Grab your best friends and look to the skies over Sleeping Beauty Castle
It just might be the signature event of Pixar Fest—and having seen a special “dress rehearsal,” we can totally see why! Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular will feature unforgettable music and incredible projections combined with the kind of mind-blowing fireworks that only Disney can create! D23 got the lowdown on what went into creating Together Forever from its show director, Susana Tubert; read all about it right here.

Pixar Fest eats

2. Eat your way through delectable Pixar-ified food and drink
If you’re able to visit the Disneyland Resort during Pixar Fest, which runs through September 3, you positively must come hungry: There is some incredible Pixar-inspired fare coming to both parks. From a “TV dinner” a la Carl Fredricksen from Up at Disneyland park’s Carnation Café and bread shaped like Monsters, Inc.’s Mike Wazowski at Disney California Adventure’s Pacific Wharf, to several amazing Pixar-themed churros at both parks, there’s something delicious for every palate. (And don’t forget: Starting on June 23, Pixar Pier’s Lamplighter Lounge will offer incredible gastropub-style food, craft beer, signature cocktails… and fan-fave lobster nachos, of course!)

Pixar Play Parade new floats

3. “Pixar Play Parade” moves to Disneyland Park…
Two fabulous parades will be bringing Pixar characters to life like never before! Case in point: The “Pixar Play Parade” will make a big move from Disney California Adventure park to Disneyland park for the duration of Pixar Fest, and it’ll feature several brand-new floats! Look for the adorably iconic Pixar lamp to kick off the festivities, as well as floats starring Joy, Sadness, and Bing-Bong from Inside Out… and Russell, Carl, Kevin, and Dug from Up.

Incredibles Paint the Night float

4. … and “Paint the Night” returns, this time at Disney California Adventure
This crowd-pleasing, brilliantly hued parade comes back to Disneyland Resort—now inside Disney California Adventure; already spot lit are high-energy floats celebrating Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., and Cars, but starting in June, a truly incredible new entrant will join the throng! Characters from The Incredibles (soon to be seen this summer in Incredibles 2) will come to life through dazzling LED lights, new music elements, and pop-art effects inspired by the mid-century-modern style of the films.

Lava

5. Catch a Pixar short or listen to some Pixar tunes
For your viewing pleasure, a collection of heartwarming Pixar Shorts will be featured at the Sunset Showcase Theater at Disney California Adventure park’s Hollywood Land during most of Pixar Fest—including faves like For the Birds and Lava. If you’re a SoCal “local” and happen to visit the resort a few times during the Fest, know that the shorts will rotate during the celebration. And over in DCA’s Paradise Gardens, look for a super-cool new live musical troupe, singing and playing all manner of Pixar-inspired music, but that’s not all: Younger fans can enjoy fun crafts and an activity area nearby, and you’ll also be able to meet and greet with Pixar characters!

Lightning and Cruz

6. Speaking of Pixar characters…
If there are Disney•Pixar characters in your life that you’ve cherished for years, chances are very high they’ll be available for photo opps (and hugs!) during Pixar Fest. Buzz Lightyear, Sheriff Woody, and Jessie from Toy Story; Mike Wazowski and Sulley from Monsters, Inc.; and Lightning McQueen and Mater from Cars will all be part of the fun. And, “darling”—we have it on good authority that some new favorites might be popping up at the resort later this summer, once Pixar Pier opens.

Pixar Pier

7. Yup, that’s right—there’s even more Pixar fun to come later this summer!
As the summer fun ramps up at Disneyland Resort, so does the Pixar merriment. On June 23, as part of Pixar Fest, Pixar Pier will open at Disney California Adventure park! The area currently known as Paradise Pier will be transformed into several distinct new neighborhoods, themed to The Incredibles (featuring the sure-to-be-amazing Incredicoaster), Toy Story, Inside Out, and so much more. Keep your eyes peeled for more information on Pixar Pier as we get closer to its big debut.

So grab your “besties” and head down to Pixar Fest, beginning April 13 and delighting one and all through September 3—only at Disneyland Resort!

Go Behind-the-Eats of the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival with Chef Jimmy Weita

By Jocelyn Buhlman

There’s always something scrumptious to celebrate at Disney California Adventure, whether you’re sipping and snacking at the Food & Wine Festival or making merry at the Disney Festival of the Holidays. No matter which festival you enjoy most, there’s one chef who helps make all of them delicious: Chef Jimmy Weita, the Chef de Cuisine for Festivals and Resort Special Events. He helps cook up all the delectable dishes we’ve come to love from Disneyland Resort’s special food events and celebrations—including the ever-popular Food & Wine Festival. We chatted with Chef Weita about creating culinary magic for California Adventure’s food festivals and got the behind-the-scenes scoop on some of your favorite eats from the 2018 Food & Wine Festival.

Disney California Adventure Food and Wine Festival

D23: Disney California Adventure is well-known for its themed food festivals. Why do you think events like the Food & Wine Festival or Disney Festival of the Holidays have become so popular?
Jimmy Weita (JW): We’re offering something different that you can’t get in any restaurant. One thing we strive to do is give guests a more unique food and beverage offering that you can’t get anywhere else. And that’s why all the food and beverage options are unique to that festival. We did the D23 Sip & Stroll event a week and a half ago. It was cool to hear D23 Members’ feedback, and how much they enjoyed coming to the festival and seeing the new things!

D23: You help run a “culinary boot camp” to prepare cast members for the festivals. Can you tell us more about what happens behind the scenes?
JW: We didn’t realize we were doing it at first, but we were creating this “boot camp,” or culinary school, within Special Events & Festivals with cooks from all of these different food locations at the park, who were learning all these food techniques they’ve never seen.

When we get to the point where we need to bring over more cast members for the festivals, everyone that signs up gets put into a two-day cross training in the Special Events kitchen. Once they go through those two days, we start training for the specific festival. We’re talking 25–30 different menu items that come out of our kitchen. For Food & Wine, we have 13 Marketplace Kiosks—two of them are beverage only—so of the rest of those 11 Marketplace Kiosks, 100 percent of the food comes out of this one kitchen. We’re not only cooking a couple things, we’re cooking a lot of things. It’s not a small scale. So, they really walk away with a sense of production and just a better understanding of cooking in general.

D23: How do you come up with new foods for each Festival?
JW: It starts with the theming—for example, Food & Wine is about the agricultural heroes of California. That gives us our starting point. We sit down and start throwing out ideas as a collective chef team. We actually involve our entire culinary team, and we kind of give them homework sometimes: “Hey, we need you to come up with a great chicken dish, so we need everyone to go home and come back with five items.”

We’ve had many items in past festivals that have started that way, like the Nashville Fried Hot Turkey we did at the Festival of the Holidays. That was an item that one of our cooks had wanted to do for a couple festivals, and we just didn’t have a place for it. But once we did, we let him drive the research and development on it.

A couple years ago, we got some feedback from a guest which was that, “When Disney says something is spicy, it’s not really spicy. It’s like ‘Disney spicy.’” And we were like, “Oh, we take offense to that!” So, for Festival of the Holidays last year, we did a spicy-themed Marketplace Kiosk, and it was really well-received, so we made sure to do the same for Food & Wine. “Peppers Cali-Ente” is exactly that and features items that have a much higher spice content.

D23: Do you have a favorite Marketplace Kiosk from the 2018 Food & Wine Fest?
JW: “Cluck-a-Doodle-Moo” is my favorite from this year. I really like the fun, tongue-in-cheek names. We thought, this is gonna be popular, so let’s put our No. 1 beef slider in there, and let’s do chicken wings!

And so, we asked ourselves, “What can we do with chicken wings?” and we said, “Well, we love salt and vinegar chips, so we should do salt and vinegar chicken wings!” That’s how that item started. One of the items we’ve been hanging on to for a couple of years is this vinegar that’s derived from beer. And we said, “This would be the perfect way to partner these things together.”

D23: Can you tell us your favorite food from this year’s Food & Wine Festival?
JW: I love the… well, it’s hard to choose—it’s like choosing one kid over the other! I love the Salt & Beer Vinegar Parmesan Chicken Wings, because they’re different. It’s not a sauce, like you’d get with typical hot wings, it’s really about the vinegar and Parmesan that’s on them.

The Compressed Asian Cucumbers with Green-Green Sauce, Toasted Almonds, and Sea Beans is probably one of the most underrated items on the menu. It’s an amazing salad. It’s got the Green-Green sauce, and a little bit of heat from the peppers. It’s one of my favorite things on the menu.

D23: How long does it take for you and your team to prepare for each new festival?
JW: On the average, about four to five months, depending on how much of the menu we change. If we’re changing 80 percent of the menu, it takes a lot longer because we have the R&D phase where we’re testing the recipes and tweaking them. It can take a good four months to get through all of that, and then to hold a tasting where everyone involved gets to taste the recipe, and then for our pricing team to come down so that they understand what it looks like and what it tastes like [to help them] put the correct price to it.

D23: What is your favorite Disney Parks food?
JW:  At Disneyland, I love the chicken at the Plaza Inn. If I’m hanging out in the park, it’s my go-to meal: the fried chicken, the mashed potatoes, and the green beans. At Disney California Adventure, I love the hot dogs at Award Wieners, and I love the cones at the Cozy Cone Motel. I started my career in Florida, and I went to culinary school at Walt Disney World. I remember going to Magic Kingdom, and they used to have this cart that sold these pizza eggrolls. They were like giant eggrolls, but they had pepperoni and cheese and tomato sauce in them. They were so great, but they went away. So fast forward to years later, and we were developing the menu for the opening of the Grand Californian Hotel and we were looking for hors d’oeuvres. And I had this food in the back of my head, so I went to the team and we developed a miniature version of the pepperoni pizza eggrolls. We had it on the menu for years. All that stemmed from remembering from being 17–18 years old and working at Disney World!

Celebrate the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival until April 12, and stay tuned right here on D23.com for future updates about all the food and fun coming to Disney California Adventure!
