Shanghai Disney Resort Gets Ready for a Magical Chinese New Year Celebration

By Beth Deitchman

The Year of the Pig is nearly upon us, and Shanghai Disney Resort is hosting an unforgettable Chinese New Year celebration from January 19–February 19. Guests from near and far can experience an abundance of offerings and activities that celebrate Chinese customs and, thanks to a little Disney magic, will create fun new memories for families and friends of all ages.

Shanghai Disney Resort Lunar New Year

Decorating one’s home for the holiday is a time-honored Chinese New Year tradition, and Shanghai Disney Resort will also dress its most festive best. Look for shades of red and gold throughout Shanghai Disneyland, along with vibrant Mickey lanterns, Chinese couplets, floral garlands, peach flowers, paper decorations, and more throughout the resort. You’ll also want to keep an ear out for Chinese New Year melodies that complete the immersive New Year experience for guests.

On Mickey Avenue, favorite characters will don their newest Chinese New Year costumes to take pictures together in front of special New Year-inspired photo backdrops. In addition to Mickey and his pals, Duffy, ShellieMay, Gelatoni, and StellaLou, be sure to spot Goofy in his God of Fortune costume, adding extra energy and excitement to the festivities.

And in honor of the Year of the Pig, one of our favorite porcine pals—Hamm from the Toy Story films—will be in the spotlight, signifying luck and good fortune. In the Garden of the Twelve Friends, the pig zodiac will also be adorned with golden coins and red couplets, creating a special photo opportunity for guests. A beautiful archway and spinning centerpiece in the Gardens of Imagination will also help create happy holiday memories as guests pose for pictures with family and friends.

Shanghai Disney Resort Lunar New Year

On select evenings at the Resort, the nightly showing of Ignite the Dream: A Nighttime Spectacular of Magic and Light will be topped off with the Chinese New Year 2019 Firework Celebration: A Feast of Love and Light. Look to the skies on January 25–26, every day from February 4–10, and on the Lantern Festival on February 19. Every morning during the celebration, Mickey and Minnie will preside over a customary drum ceremony near the Storytellers Statue to bring good fortune and happy wishes to the start of the day. Mickey and his pals will also gather in Celebration Square throughout the day for a special high-energy performance of Shanghai Swing that just might inspire guests to swing along.

The Garden of the Twelve Friends transforms for the holiday into the Wishing Garden, where guests can write their New Year wishes on wish cards and hang them in special locations around the garden area to send out their hopes and dreams for a prosperous year ahead.

At the Wishing Star Market in Disneytown, a special Chinese New Year carnival will feature traditional Chinese snacks, festive décor, charming photo locations, and the Wishing Star Skating Rink, where guests will glide their way to memories that will last a lifetime.

For the first time ever, on February 4 and 5, guests visiting Once Upon A Time Adventure at Enchanted Storybook Castle will hear a Shanghainese narration of the attraction’s opening scenes. The new soundtrack was recorded by Pan Hong, who previously provided the attraction’s Mandarin voiceover.

Shanghai Disney Resort Lunar New Year

The celebration for the senses extends to the taste buds, and the Resort has planned special reunion dinners on February 4 and 5. Families and friends can gather for this longstanding tradition in the Cinderella Ballroom at the Shanghai Disneyland Hotel, where the festivities include special activities for children and a live screening of the Chinese New Year Gala on televisions throughout the ballroom.

Lumière’s Kitchen in the Shanghai Disneyland Hotel hosts a Chinese New Year Feast from February 3–10, featuring a magnificent buffet and photo opportunities with Disney friends. There are also festive food offerings in Shanghai Disneyland throughout the celebration at Wandering Moon Restaurant, the Royal Banquet Hall, Remy’s Patisserie, and Il Paperino.

Shanghai Disney Resort Lunar New Year

Guests will come home with lasting memories from this year’s Chinese New Year celebration, but there will also be more than 40 limited-edition Chinese New Year merchandise items that might be impossible to resist. The new Chinese New Year merchandise collection takes inspiration from customary colors and symbols in the Chinese culture. Vibrant red and gold hues reflect joy and prosperity, while the golden pig, lantern designs, couplets, gold ingots, and other traditional elements help create a diverse array of holiday gift choices. Plus, Lucky Bags are back this year, filled with exclusive holiday merchandise inspired by Hamm the pig. Among the must-have items are plushes, fashionable fleeces, dazzling Minnie headbands, limited-edition Chinese New Year Pins, and so much more.

The festivities begin this Saturday, January 19. Visit ShanghaiDisneyResort.com for more information.

Deconstructed BLT

Enjoy this recipe from the Epcot International Festival of the Arts.

Serves 4

PORK BELLY
1/4 cup salt
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon black pepper
2 pounds pork belly
2 teaspoons olive oil

TOMATO JAM
2 teaspoons olive oil
2 tablespoons diced onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1 pound plum tomatoes, diced
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
Coarse salt, freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil leaves

SOUS VIDE EGG
4 large eggs

ROMAINE PURÉE
1/2 cup frozen spinach leaves, thawed
3/4 cup chopped romaine lettuce
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 teaspoon salt

HERB CRUMB
1/2 cup panko bread crumbs
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning

GARNISH
Dijon mustard
Micro basil, optional

FOR PORK BELLY:

  1. Mix salt, sugar, and black pepper together in a small bowl.
  2. Rub all sides of pork belly with salt mix. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 24 hours.
  3. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  4. Heat olive oil in large skillet over medium heat for 5 minutes. Place pork belly, skin side down, in hot oil and cook for 2 minutes, or until browned. Turn pork belly and cook other side until browned. Move to a baking pan.
  5. Wrap pork belly in parchment paper and foil. Bake in the pan for 3 hours.
  6. Remove from oven, unwrap and slice pork belly into 8 (2-ounce) slices.
  7. Heat a sauté pan over medium heat for 3 minutes. Cook pork belly slices for 1 to 2 minutes on each side, or until crispy. Keep warm until ready to serve.

FOR TOMATO JAM:

  1. Heat oil in medium saucepan over medium heat for 5 minutes. Add onion and cook for 5 minutes, or until translucent.
  2. Add garlic and tomatoes and cook, stirring frequently, for 2 minutes. Stir in balsamic vinegar and brown sugar and stir until brown sugar dissolves. Add salt and pepper.
  3. Cook on medium-low heat for 45 minutes, until thick and reduced by 3/4. Keep warm until ready to serve.

FOR SOUS VIDE EGG:

  1. Preheat water to 145°F in a sous vide machine (or see poached egg instructions below). Add eggs and cook for 30 minutes.
  2. Transfer to an ice bath for 2 minutes.
  3. Peel eggs and place in a bowl until ready to serve.

FOR ROMAINE PURÉE:

  1. Remove excess liquid from thawed spinach by wrapping in tea towel or paper towels and squeezing.
  2. Place spinach, romaine lettuce, mayonnaise, sour cream, and salt into food processor. Blend until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

FOR HERB CRUMB:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Place panko bread crumbs on baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring once, until golden brown.
  3. Remove from oven and cool for 15 minutes.
  4. Place toasted bread crumbs and Italian seasoning into food processor and pulse until fine.

TO SERVE:

  1. Spoon 2 tablespoons of romaine purée down left side of a serving plate. Sprinkle 1 to 2 tablespoons of herb crumb over purée.
  2. Squeeze a thin line of Dijon mustard from top right side of plate to top left side.
  3. Place 2 pieces of pork belly in center. Spoon 1 tablespoon of tomato jam on each end of pork belly. Place 1 egg on top of pork belly.
  4. Garnish with micro basil, if desired.

Cook’s Note: If you don’t have a sous vide machine, just soft-boil the eggs on the stovetop. Bring a saucepan of water to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Using a slotted spoon, carefully lower eggs into water one at a time. Cook 6 minutes (set a timer!). Transfer to an ice bath for 2 minutes to make them easier to peel.

What to drink: Try a smooth Cabernet Sauvignon from Washington State.

Our spirits soared at first sight of the peculiar pachyderm in the trailer for the all-new adventure from Disney and visionary director Tim Burton. Dumbo takes the classic story we know and love and expands upon it. Colin Farrell stars as former circus star Holt Farrier, who, along with his children, Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins), is tasked by circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) with caring for a certain baby elephant with oversized ears—ears that enable Dumbo to take flight. Our hero’s unlikely talent captivates crowds and launches an incredible comeback for Medici’s circus… and also attracts the attention of persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton), who is determined to make Dumbo the star of his new and exciting entertainment venture. Dumbo takes to the air with the talented aerial artist Colette Marchant (Eva Green) by his side, and we discover that the elephant’s new home may have a dark side…

Tim Burton (Alice in Wonderland) directs from a screenplay by Ehren Kruger (Ophelia, Dream House). Penguins hails from the filmmaking team behind Bears and Chimpanzee.

Avengers: Endgame

 Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame
When the trailer for Avengers: Endgame debuted just a month ago, Disney fans around the world stopped what they were doing to enjoy a first glimpse at the eagerly anticipated film, making it the most-viewed trailer in history in its first 24 hours. We’re counting the days until we find out what will happen next for Iron Man, Cap and Black Widow—not to mention the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And in the meantime, we’ll continue watching the trailer, searching for clues…

Aladdin

Aladdin—May 24
Make way for Prince Ali, fabulous he, Ali Ababwa! Disney’s Aladdin, a thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of the animated classic, opens in theaters this spring. Mena Massoud (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) brings to life the charming street rat, alongside Will Smith (Ali, Men in Black), who stars as the larger-than-life Genie. Naomi Scott (Power Rangers) plays the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine; Marwan Kenzari (Murder on the Orient Express) is powerful sorcerer Jafar; Navid Negahban (Legion) is the Sultan, Jasmine’s overly concerned father; Nasim Pedrad (Saturday Night Live) is Princess Jasmine’s free-spirited best friend and confidante; Billy Magnussen (Into the Woods) plays the handsome and arrogant suitor Prince Anders; and Numan Acar (The Great Wall) plays Hakim, who commands the palace guards and serves as Jafar’s right hand man.

The stellar team behind Aladdin includes director Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), who also wrote the screenplay with John August (Dark Shadows, Big Fish); producers Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes) and Jonathan Eirich (Death Note) and executive producers Marc Platt (La La Land) and Kevin De La Noy (The Dark Knight Rises). The film features a score from eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid), as well as new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and Oscar-winning lyricists Howard Ashman (Little Shop of Horrors) and Tim Rice (The Lion King) and two new songs written by Menken and Oscar and Tony® Award-winning songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen).

Toy Story 4

Toy Story 4—June 21
Woody, Buzz and the gang are back, and there’s a new “toy” in town: Forky, a disposable spork, who adamantly insists he is not a toy (though Bonnie would beg to differ). In this highly anticipated return to the Toy Story world, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy. Josh Cooley (Riley’s First Date) directs; Jonas Rivera (Inside Out, Up) and Mark Nielsen (associate producer, Inside Out) are Toy Story 4’s producers.

The Lion King

The Lion King—July 19
Director Jon Favreau led audiences on a breathtaking journey to the jungle in the 2016 blockbuster The Jungle Book, and he’s now bringing us to the African savanna in The Lion King, which also utilizes pioneering filmmaking techniques to bring to life treasured characters in a whole new way. As Simba, the young lion who is destined to be king, Donald Glover leads an all-star cast that includes Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon.

Artemis Fowl

Artemis Fowl—August 9
In Disney’s adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s beloved book, 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl—who hails from a long line of criminal masterminds—embarks upon a search for his father, who has mysteriously disappeared. Artemis’ journey takes him to an ancient, underground civilization that is home to a powerful, hidden race of fairies who may have had something to do with his father’s disappearance.

Artemis Fowl is directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Tamara Smart, Nonzo Anozie, with Josh Gad, and Judi Dench. Judy Hofflund and Branagh produce with Angus More Gordon and Matthew Jenkins serving as executive producers. The screenplay is written by Conor McPherson.

Frozen 2—November 22
This November brings a sequel worth melting for. Frozen 2 reunites the cast and creative team from the Oscar-winning 2013 film Frozen—the highest grossing animated film of all time—including actors Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad, who reprise their roles, as well as directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee.

Star Wars Episode IX

Star Wars: Episode IX—December 20
The Walt Disney Studios will close out 2019 by taking moviegoers to a galaxy far, far away for the final installment of the Skywalker saga. Production on Star Wars: Episode IX got underway last August at London’s Pinewood Studios with J.J. Abrams directing, as well as co-writing the screenplay with Chris Terrio.

Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo and Billie Lourd are returning cast members, with Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant and Keri Russell joining the Star Wars galaxy. The new film will also feature actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels and Billy Dee Williams, who reprises his role as Lando Calrissian; and through the use of previously unseen footage that was shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Carrie Fisher will appear in Episode IX in the iconic role of Leia Organa.

The news that legendary composer John Williams will create the score, as he has for every previous chapter in the Star Wars saga since 1977’s A New Hope, was music to our ears.

Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Michelle Rejwan, and executive produced by Callum Greene and Jason McGatlin.

Yes, friends, we’re only a few months’ away now from the debut of Brie Larson as Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel… and if you’re anything like us, and are fascinated by how Larson trained to become a kick-butt hero, you need to take a look at the film’s brand-new featurette, above. Adventures by Disney Takes to the River(s)…

Yes, we know, we’re only a week and change into 2019, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start planning some vacations for a year from now. (It’s always nice to have something to look forward to, right?) Thankfully, Adventures by Disney will be offering some incredible new trips in 2020, and we’re marking our calendars and making some plans as we speak… err, type.

Next year, ABD will offer more European river cruise sailings than ever before—including a brand-new vacation on the Rhone River! For the first time ever, guests will sail through southern France including Provence, a diverse region rich with cultural, artistic, historical and culinary delights. During the Rhone River vacation, Adventurers will explore ancient cities, quaint hilltop villages, fairytale castles, romantic vineyards, and so much more. This new river cruise joins ABD’s other offerings along the Seine, Rhine, and Danube rivers—amazing all-inclusive vacations that not only include the services of up to eight Adventure Guides (who are your hosts in each destination and onboard the ship), but also offer up the amenities of luxury river cruise stalwart AmaWaterways.

Stay tuned for more info on ABD’s new Rhone river cruise when it becomes available later this month.
