Behind the Scenes of Renegade Nell: A World of Magic, Intrigue, and Adventure

By Cecilia Sarantopoulos

Enter the world of Nell Jackson, but be warned: she’s not one to trifle with. In Disney+’s latest original series, Renegade Nell, we follow the witty and courageous Nell (Louisa Harland) as she navigates the treacherous landscape of 18th century England. Framed for a crime she didn’t commit, Nell becomes the county’s most sought-after outlaw, with danger lurking around every corner.

In this perilous premise, magic unexpectedly emerges as Nell’s ally in the form of a fairy-like spirit called Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed), who can grant Nell extraordinary strength. With that advantage—and joined by her younger sisters Roxy (Bo Bragason) and George (Florence Keen)—Nell is determined to combat the nefarious schemes orchestrated by Robert Hennessey, the Earl of Poynton (Adrian Lester), a sinister political figure who wants to thwart her at any cost.

In a scene from the series Renegade Nell, Robert Hennessey, the Earl of Poynton (Adrian Lester) is wearing a brown powdered wig and looking to his left. He’s also wearing a black steampunk-style jacket with gold details and a white point collar dress shirt.

Lester couldn’t resist the mix of magic, political intrigue, and highway robbery within Renegade Nell’s script—as well as the opportunity to engage in exhilarating fight sequences while wearing some … unique costuming. “You may think you’ve perfected a fight sequence during rehearsal,” the actor tells D23. “But then you find yourself in a field at 2 o’clock in the morning in November, with freezing temperatures and literal frost on the ground—all while wearing heels and tights!”

The Earl of Poynton employs every ounce of his power to destroy the seemingly undefeatable heroine—and gets help in his quest from Sofia Wilmot (Alice Kremelberg), an ambitious widow who also wants to take Nell down. “Sofia is so complex and kind of a slow burn,” Kremelberg says. “She starts off pretty moral but then takes a bit of a dive.” Behind the scenes of their characters’ villainous schemes, Kremelberg worked with real animals and played with fire—literally. “Filming those [magic] scenes was so much fun,” she admits.

Rounding up the antagonistic trio is Sofia’s brother, Thomas Blancheford (Jake Dunn)—heir to the local “toff,” the landowning aristocrat. Thomas often wreaks havoc and imposes classist tyranny onto tenants, embodying the epitome of entitlement and privilege. “There was so much to unravel while playing Thomas, from his family’s stifled dynamic to the presence of dark magic,” explains Dunn.

In a scene from the series Renegade Nell, Charles Devereux (Frank Dillane) is wearing a brown powdered wig, a gold steampunk-style jacket, and a white point collar dress shirt. He is holding a white teacup and plate. In the background is a vibrant painting of a forest and a boar, and to Devereux’s right are flowers.

As Nell and her allies fend off various enemies, they’re also navigating a treacherous landscape of power and privilege, where justice hangs in the balance. Helping Nell on her journey is Charles Devereux (Frank Dillane), a charismatic highwayman, and the Blanchefords’ steadfast stable boy, Ressalas (Enyi Okoronkwo). Devereux often infuses the series with humor and wit: “I was particularly drawn to the more bombastic, comedic aspects of the show. I’m a huge fan of slapstick humor,” Dillane says.

Tough, self-reliant, but definitely not looking for love—joining the Queen’s army seems far more appealing—“Nell shares many qualities with our favorite Disney heroines,” says Ben Taylor, director of the series’ first two episodes. Taylor emphasizes Nell’s “strong heart and moral code” as reminiscent of classic Disney Princesses.

In a scene from the series Renegade Nell, Roxy Jackson (Bo Bragason), George Jackson (Florence Keen), and Nell Jackson (Louisa Harland) are sitting on a carriage. Roxy is wearing a checkered dress with floral patterns and a beige coat with fur trims; George is wearing a black hat, round glasses, a looser-cut coat with patterns, an open-necked white shirt, brown pants that reach her knees, and beige socks; Nell is wearing a pirate-style black hat, a white shirt, red pants, brown pirate boots, a brown belt, and a red and blue Regency tailcoat. She is also holding the reins of the carriage.

Taylor also drew creative inspiration from the iconic Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. “In the initial stages of conceptualizing the show’s design and embracing the swashbuckling essence, the influence of the Pirates of the Caribbean was definitely present,” he tells D23.

As the series gears up for its debut, anticipation is at an all-time high. With its compelling storytelling, dynamic characters, and enchanting world-building, Renegade Nell promises to be a must-watch for all Disney fans.

Star Wars Takes Over the Empire State Building with Product Reveals, a Light Show, and More!

By Jennifer Chalifoux

It’s almost time again for the Star Wars fan-favorite holiday: May the 4th.

Hayden Christensen sits beside a large sculpture of Darth Vader inside the Empire State Building. He wears a black sweater, pants, loafers, a dark gray blazer, and coat. Above the sculpture is a black arch adorned with "Star Wars," "THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING," and a Lucasfilm trademark, against the backdrop of the New York City skyline.

We kicked off the official March to May the 4th last week, as Disney Consumer Products and Lucasfilm took over the Empire State Building with product reveals, activities, and news spotlighting the villains of the Star Wars galaxy—all commenced by Star Wars actor Hayden Christensen.

Darth Vader, wielding a red lightsaber, stands before a red circle featuring a mountain in a poster promoting the 2025 Star Wars Celebration in Japan. Surrounding the circle is a branch adorned with purple flowers, while small gray planes dot the background. The bottom of the poster displays the text: "JAPAN 2025 STAR WARS CELEBRATION."

First on the list of exciting announcements: We have an update about Star Wars Celebration, the Ultimate Star Wars Fan Event, taking place April 18–20, 2025, in Japan. Tickets for Star Wars Celebration 2025 will go on sale Thursday, May 2, at 4 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. ET.

The key art for the event has been created in the traditional black-ink painting style known as sumi-e, with Darth Vader placed in the foreground. Brush strokes extend from the Sith Lord to the branches of a cherry blossom tree, leading to AT-ATs, X-wings, and TIE fighters. The Rising Sun of the Japanese flag balances the image, with Mount Fuji featured in its center. For more information, visit StarWarsCelebration.com.

In a poster for the movie Star Wars – Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn (left) and Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi (right) stand back-to-back, holding green and blue lightsabers respectively, dressed in brown Jedi robes. Above them, Natalie Portman as Queen Padmé Amidala wears a red and gold velvet gown with draped sleeves and a gold and red headpiece, her black hair wrapped around it, seated on a metallic throne with orange velvet. Behind Padmé Amidala, Darth Maul's piercing eyes loom. The poster features text from top to bottom: "25th ANNIVERSARY," "EVERY SAGA HAS A BEGINNING," "STAR WARS EPISODE I THE PHANTOM MENACE RETURNS TO THEATERS MAY 3RD, 2024," "WITH AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK AT THE UPCOMING DISNEY+ STAR WARS SERIES THE ACOLYTE," followed by credits for talent and creatives.

Next, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace is celebrating its 25th anniversary! Fans can soon experience a limited-time re-release of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, in theaters beginning May 3, to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary. In addition, fans will also be treated to an exclusive look at The Acolyte, the upcoming Disney+ series set during the High Republic era, following all The Phantom Menace screenings. The upcoming Disney+ series, set approximately 100 years before The Phantom Menace, launches exclusively on Disney+ June 4.

On May 4, in honor of both the film’s anniversary and the Star Wars fan holiday, fans will have the opportunity to see all nine episodes of the Skywalker Saga in theaters for a premium marathon event. Those attending will receive a limited-edition poster. Tickets are on sale now.

This new book, coming soon by Insight Editions, covers the character’s journey, from his genesis in George Lucas’ first drafts of Star Wars to Anakin Skywalker’s tragic fall to the Dark Side in the prequel trilogy, and beyond.

Far removed from his previous world, Carmy faces the daunting challenges of small business ownership, a stubborn kitchen team, and strained familial ties, all compounded by the aftermath of his brother’s suicide. Amidst the struggle to revitalize both the shop and his own spirit, Carmy discovers unexpected support from his gritty kitchen crew, who ultimately become his chosen family.

In a scene from the television show Abbott Elementary, Jacob Hill (left), played by Chris Perfetti and Janine Teagues (right), played by Quinta Brunson, are sitting in chairs within an audience space, clapping with pride. Perfetti wears a checkered shirt, a green sweater, and a mustard puffer jacket, while Brunson wears an orange and red striped dress. Other audience members are also seen joining the applause.

Abbott Elementary (2021-present)

Abbott Elementary is a heartwarming American mockumentary sitcom set in the underfunded and predominantly Black Willard R. Abbott Elementary School in Philadelphia. Led by the perpetually optimistic second-grade teacher Janine Teagues, the ensemble cast navigate the challenges of mismanagement and harsh conditions while striving to make a difference in the lives of their students. With a mix of humor and sincerity, the show highlights the dedication of teachers, including Janine, Jacob, Barbara, Melissa, Ava, and Gregory, as they experience the trials and triumphs of working in education.

In a scene from the television series Only Murders in the Building, actors Selena Gomez (Mabel), Martin Short (Oliver), and Steve Martin (Charles Haden) stand frozen as they encounter a woman. Gomez has a startled expression and is wearing a white and black patterned coat with matching loafers. Short, smiling, dons a lilac shirt, gray undercoat, black jacket, colorful shawl, gray pants, and black sneakers, and is gripping Martin's forearm. Martin, also shocked, sports a striped, blue shirt, blue sweater with matching stripes, and blue jeans. The background showcases the interior of an apartment.

Only Murders in the Building (2021-present)

This delightful comedic mystery series bring together the unlikely trio played by Steve Martin (Charles Haden), Martin Short (Oliver), and Selena Gomez (Mabel). Set in a posh New York City apartment building, the show follows these three neighbors who bond over their shared obsession with true crime podcasts. When real murders shake up their building, they embark on hilarious and amateur sleuthing adventures, complete with witty banter and unexpected twists.

In a scene from the television series Normal People, Connell (left), played by Paul Mescal and Marianne (right), played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, are seated on a marble pavement. Connell wears a gray T-shirt, black cargo shorts, and sneakers, while Marianne wears a black midi dress and sneakers, holding an ice cream cone. Marianne gazes at Connell while he looks down.

Normal People (2020)

Based on Sally Rooney’s bestselling novel of the same name, Normal People explores the complex relationship between Connell and Marianne, two young adults from a small town in Ireland. The series follows their journey through high school and university as they navigate love, friendship, and personal growth. Set against the backdrop of societal expectations and class dynamics, Normal People delves into the intricacies of human connection and the impact of intimate relationships on shaping one’s identity.

In a scene from the television series Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, from left to right, Diane Lane, Calista Flockhart, and Chloë Sevigny stand indoors conversing. They are in black dresses, with Flockhart and Sevigny seen holding drinks as they gaze toward Diane.

Feud: Capote vs. The Swans (2024)

Season 2 of Ryan Murphy’s Feud anthology is set in the glamorous world of 1950s and 1960s New York City. It explores the complex dynamics of friendship, betrayal, and ambition within the upper echelons of society. The season delves into the infamous feud between writer Truman Capote and the glamorous socialite “swans” of high society, including Babe Paley and Slim Keith. Through a mix of historical drama and fictionalized storytelling, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans offers a compelling glimpse into the lives of these larger-than-life personalities and the scandals that rocked their social circles.

In a scene from the television series Reservation Dogs, Bear Smallhill (left), played by D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, is walking with Cheese (right), played by Lane Factor. Bear wears a gray graphic hoodie, a blue jacket, black jeans, and black sneakers. Cheese sports a red cap, a short-sleeve black shirt with floral details, green cargo pants, and black slides. In the background, a blue truck and a white trailer are visible.

Reservation Dogs (2021-2023)

Reservation Dogs captures the essence of Indigenous youth with its refreshing blend of comedy and drama. Set in rural Oklahoma, the series follows a tight-knit group of four teenagers navigating the challenges of adolescence while dreaming of a brighter future away from their reservation community. With its authentic portrayal of Native American life and heartfelt storytelling, Reservation Dogs offers a compelling and often humorous exploration of friendship, identity, and the pursuit of dreams.

Disney Destiny Will Bring Stories of Legendary Disney Heroes and Villains to Life

Disney Cruise Line revealed the first details about its next ship, the Disney Destiny, as it reached a new construction milestone today with a keel laying ceremony at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

With the good luck garnered by this maritime tradition, this ship of legends and lore is beginning to take shape.

The design theme of the Disney Destiny, sister to the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure, will be “Heroes and Villains,” drawing on the legacy of beloved Disney stories, characters and theme park attractions, to forge a cruise vacation that will empower guests to embrace their own calling aboard every unforgettable voyage.

The Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering teams were inspired by the dynamic duality of every great Disney story, where opposing forces of light and dark drive characters to rise to their purpose, when developing the Disney Destiny.

Onboard, guests will encounter heroes and villains alike—including those from beloved Walt Disney Animation Studios stories like The Lion King, Hercules, and One Hundred and One Dalmatians—within the spaces, experiences and entertainment throughout their voyage.

To embody and embolden the theme, Disney also unveiled brand-new filigree artwork for the bow of the Disney Destiny, continuing a beloved Disney Cruise Line design tradition. The illustration depicts Minnie Mouse striking a valiant pose in a heroic ensemble, her cape waving majestically in the sea breeze as she boldly leads guests toward their vacation destinies.

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager, Disney Cruise Line. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising as we offer even more ways for families to experience Disney magic and world-class service at sea.”

The Disney Destiny is scheduled for delivery in 2025 as part of a multi-year expansion of the Disney Cruise Line fleet that includes the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure, the Disney Adventure that will homeport in Singapore, and the new island destination in The Bahamas, Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Behind the Scenes of Marvel Animation’s X-Men ’97

By Zach Johnson

The wait is over, bub.

Set a few months after the events of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–97), Marvel Animation's X-Men '97 finds the beloved team of Cyclops (voiced by Ray Chase), Jean Grey (voiced by Jennifer Hale), Storm (voiced by Alison Sealy-Smith), Wolverine (voiced by Cal Dodd), Rogue (voiced by Lenore Zann), Beast (voiced by George Buza), Gambit (voiced by AJ LoCascio), Jubilee (voiced by Holly Chou), Morph (voiced by JP Karliak), Bishop (voiced by Isaac Robinson-Smith), and Nightcrawler (voiced by Adrian Hough) back in action—except now, they're struggling with the loss of Professor X and pondering their own futures.

"The X-Men are a team that protects a world that hates and fears them," says executive producer Brad Winderbaum, Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation for Marvel Studios. "There's always a double-edged sword when it comes to mutants' place in society."

Jubilee generates rainbow pyrotechnic energy plasmoids from her hands. She is in the center of the dance floor, surrounded by other humans.

One of the X-Men's greatest adversaries, Magneto (voiced by Matthew Waterson)—the self-proclaimed master of magnetism—has devoted his mutant life trying to protect the less fortunate. But in Professor X's absence, he has been charged with leading the X-Men and fostering a peaceful coexistence. "Some humans have come around and learned to live in harmony with mutantkind," Winderbaum says. "Some mutants have come around—like Magneto, who wants to uphold Xavier's vision of the future. However, some factions of society still hate and fear the mutants, which leads to a number of problems for the team."

Not only does X-Men '97 feature plenty of action and adventure, but it also shines a light on more serious topics—just as the groundbreaking X-Men: The Animated Series did. "We explore bigger themes that deal with inclusiveness, racism, social justice, civil rights—everything that, frankly, was in the bedrock of the characters in the comics that [Disney Legends] Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created," says Winderbaum. "The Chris Claremont run in the comics is also very much at the heart of this story and is extremely important. At its core, this is a soap opera. It's a story about characters who are volatile when they're put together, who are in trying situations due to living in a society that doesn't embrace them."

Rogue flies through orange and yellow clouds.

From Loki's Kate Herron to The Marvels' Nia DaCosta, X-Men: The Animated Series was formative in that it introduced many future Marvel Studios filmmakers to a world of multi-dimensional heroes and villains. By all accounts, X-Men '97seems poised to do the same. "Across the board, the project that's been mentioned more than any other as a creative touchstone when we meet with filmmakers is X-Men: The Animated Series," Winderbaum says. "That's certainly true for me. It was the first time I ever saw anything serialized on television. Even though I was maybe 9 or 10 years old at the time, it never felt like it was talking down to me; it treated me like an adult. It had themes that resonated with me. I remember feeling real emotion when certain things would happen—like Morph's death in the first episode. I think about that all the time, the way that made me feel. It was an important show for a lot of a lot of people—for a lot of filmmakers—in my generation."

Stream the first two episodes of Marvel Animation's X-Men '97 now on Disney+. A new episode will debut each Wednesday leading up to the Season 1 finale, streaming May 15.
