Disney and Pixar’s Coco Comes to the Hollywood Bowl for the First Time

By Beth Deitchman

Get ready to experience Disney and Pixar’s Coco like never before. The stunning film will be brought to life on stage for the first time in Coco Live in Concert at the Hollywood Bowl, Friday, November 8, and Saturday, November 9. The spectacular event, which will see the legendary Hollywood Bowl transform into the Land of the Dead, features an all-star lineup of special guests, including Benjamin Bratt, Eva Longoria, Carlos Rivera, Miguel, Alex Gonzalez, Jaime Camil, Lele Pons, Rudy Mancuso, and Natalia Jimenez. These talented performers will appear on stage throughout the evening as the Oscar®-winning film plays on the Bowl’s movie screen accompanied by a full live orchestra. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday, September 13, at 12 p.m. PT.

In celebration of Día de los Muertos—and to get into the spirit of the evening—guests are encouraged to wear their most festive Day of the Dead costumes. Mariachi Divas will entertain with traditional Mariachi music throughout the night, and attendees can look forward to state-of-the-art digital projection imagery from Mousetrappe, the award-winning immersive design agency that created stunning imagery for Disney’s The Little Mermaid Live in Concert at the Hollywood Bowl earlier this year.

Led by conductor Sarah Hicks, the full orchestra will perform Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino’s original score. They will be joined by special guests for the film’s unforgettable songs, including “Remember Me”—Oscar winner for Original Song—as well as “Un Poco Loco,” “The World Es Mi Familia,” and more.

“I’m very excited to join this incredible group of exceptional talent, in the city that I’m from, to bring this very special movie and message to life,” said Miguel. “The idea of celebrating our ancestors is very dear to my heart, especially after the passing of my grandparents.”

Felipe Fernandez del Paso—an acclaimed director of theater and film, as well as an Oscar-nominated production designer whose credits include the 2003 feature Frida—directs Coco Live in Concert. Amy Tinkham, who has recently served as creative director of Las Vegas residencies for Aerosmith and James Taylor and who has also directed Dancing with the Stars and America’s Got Talent Live tours, is creative consultant.

The concert is produced by Disney Concerts and Live Nation/Andrew Hewitt & Bill Silva Presents, a team who has brought together several highly acclaimed live to film events at the Hollywood Bowl including Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in Concert starring Zooey Deschanel and Kelsey Grammer as well as Disney’s The Little Mermaid starring Lea Michele and Harvey Fierstein.

Coco is my heart, it means everything to me. It’s ancestors, family, music, love, culture, traditions, dreams and passion. Coco is everything that inspires, connects and makes the world a better place. It’s a unique film,” said Alex Gonzalez. “The Hollywood Bowl is a very special place where we can celebrate and share our love and appreciation for music and Coco! It’s a huge honor and privilege to be a part of this beautiful performance at the Hollywood Bowl. I am so excited, can’t wait!”

The Princess and the Frog‘s 10-Year Reunion Has Us Leaping for Joy

By Zach Johnson

Beverly Hills got a taste of New Orleans when the talented team behind Disney’s The Princess and the Frog reunited for a special 10th anniversary event at Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on September 5. As part of the Marc Davis Celebration of Animation series, the evening brought out Disney Legend Anika Noni Rose (voice of Tiana), Jenifer Lewis (voice of Mama Odie), Michael-Leon Wooley (voice of Louis), and Keith David (voice of Dr. Facilier), as well as director Ron Clements, producer Peter Del Vecho, screenwriter Rob Edwards, head of effects Marlon West, character animator Bruce W. Smith, and composer and Disney Legend Randy Newman. Oscar®-nominated actress Quvenzhané Wallis—a self-admitted Princess and the Frog super-fan—hosted the lively Q&A, calling the job a “privilege.”

Concept art from the film appeared onscreen as fans filled the room. Rose then emerged from backstage to give a rousing performance of “Down in New Orleans,” backed by Kenny Sara & the Sounds of New Orleans. Later, Clements recalled how Rose was only the second actress to audition for the role—and how she was just as determined as the very character he’d created.

The Princess and the Frog 10th anniversary event

“My first audition was the night that Dreamgirls premiered in Los Angeles. I left the premiere, and I did not do one [interview], I did not go to a party, I did not drink a drink. I went back to my hotel, and I made my sister-in-law go with me and work with me on my lines for my audition the next day,” Rose said. For her callback, Rose had to leave Australia, where she was working on a miniseries, to audition in Los Angeles. Although she didn’t have much time to rest or prepare, Rose didn’t complain. “Never once did I feel, ‘Oh, my God! I can’t believe I have to do all this.’ Never once did I feel I was not where I was supposed to be. Never once did I feel like this girl was not me. I felt like I knew her from the moment I read the sides. And I’m going to cry, so…”

Wooley, meanwhile, didn’t know he’d won the role of Louis until Newman casually mentioned it in a recording session. At the time, Wooley was working on a demo of the song “When We’re Human” in New York when Newman made a surprise appearance at the studio. Before leaving, Wooley recalled, “I said, ‘Randy, it’s been a pleasure to work with you. I’m honored.’ He said, ‘Yeah, I’m glad you’re playing the gator.’ I walked to the car, got inside and just [screamed]!”

The Princess and the Frog 10th anniversary event

Like Wooley, the larger-than-life Lewis confessed she was in awe of Newman. “My favorite part was being in the studio with Randy. I wanted to please him so much! I had sung so many of the songs when I was doing club work in New York,” she recalled, launching into a few bars of “Dig a Little Deeper” just moments later. Lewis also revealed she’d originally auditioned for the role of Eudora, which went to Disney Legend Oprah Winfrey. “I said, ‘Darling, there’s nothing sweet about my voice!’” she recalled, eliciting laughter. “‘Do you have another part?’” Of course, her talents were better suited for Mama Odie, the 197-year-old voodoo priestess. Mimicking comedian Moms Mabley’s iconic voice, Lewis joked, “All you gotta do is take your teeth out!”

Before the Q&A ended and the screening started, Rose introduced her goddaughter, who was dressed for the occasion in a Tiana dress. “This,” the emotional star said, “is what it’s all about.”

Released nationwide on December 11, 2009, The Princess and the Frog received three Oscar nominations, including Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Song for “Almost There” and “Down in New Orleans.” The latter song earned Newman his 18th Grammy® nomination.

Tamron Hall Is Ready to Talk the Talk on Daytime

By Zach Johnson

Tamron Hall’s eponymous daytime talk show premieres Monday, September 9 (visit TamronHallShow.com for times and channels), and the bubbly and curious host hopes it will spark continued conversations after each episode ends. “I want people to see a show that looks like their life, a show that resembles something they’re going through. I want them to see themselves, you know?” Hall says. “It has my name, but when I say it’s ‘our show’, I really mean that. I’ve gone through a lot in my life—some of it very public—but in my loneliest moments, the best advice I got from people was to be my true self. That’s what this show is. It’s the fun of life. It’s the ups. It’s the downs. It’s the book of life.”

Although Tamron Hall is primarily filmed in front of a live studio audience in New York City, the award-winning broadcaster has traveled across the country to meet with seemingly ordinary people who have extraordinary stories. Talking to these people—sometimes at their own kitchen tables!—reminded Hall that people are actually more alike than they are different. “We’re all going through the same thing. We want the best life we can have. If you have kids, you want the best for them. You want to have good friends, an occasional good drink—if you drink—and a good meal. You want to have that experience,” Hall says. “None of us, I think, want to do this alone.”

Tamron Hall

Acknowledging that her name and broadcast experience may be what initially draw viewers to the show, Hall reiterates that it’s not really about her. “I am not the focus,” Hall says. “What I do for a living allows me to ask the questions and probe the conversation and move it forward.”

Hall and Bill Geddie are the executive producers, Talia Parkinson-Jones is the co-executive producer, Andrew Scher is the supervising producer and Randi Clarke Lennon is the director. Tamron Hall is distributed in national syndication by Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer and International, the global content sales and distribution segment of The Walt Disney Company.

Magical Moments Take Center Stage at D23 Expo 2019

By Savannah Salazar

D23 Expo 2019 may have come and gone but the magical moments live on. Last week, fans gathered at the ultimate Disney fan event to experience fantastic panels, shopping, surprises and more. From Hall D23 to the vast fun of the show floor, excitement could be found in every corner of the Anaheim Convention Center, and Center Stage was no exception. From character voices, to toy hunters and Broadway stars, Center Stage brought the magic of D23 Expo up and close for fans on the show floor. And that’s just a taste of the magical moments!

The Expo Show

1. The Expo Show!
Hosted by Disney all-stars and fan-favorites Bret Iwan, Ashley Eckstein, Bill Rogers and Cami Dixon—voices of Mickey Mouse, Ahsoka Tano, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, respectively—The Expo Show! brought a variety of special guests and surprises that made us say “oh, boy!” including a talk with D23 Expo mural artist ARCY.

Jeff Shelly

2. Artists Spotlight
Thanks to our friends at Sunglass Hut, Disney artists Miran Kim, Jeff Shelly and Tim Rogerson took Center Stage to show fans just what it takes to bring the classic “fab 5” Disney characters to life, infusing their own techniques and flair in their artwork.

Mickey's Disco Dance Party

3. Mickey’s Disco Dance Party
There was a lot of hustle and bustle at D23 Expo, but over at Center Stage, you were sure to bust a move! Fans of all ages had a ball as they joined Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in the grooviest disco dance party. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Mickey Mouse Disco album, Center Stage transformed into a technicolor dance floor, with fans boogieing on and off-stage.

Toy Hunter

4. Toy Hunter
Toy Hunter host Jordan Hembrough shared his toys at this year’s ultimate Disney fan event. From classic Disney and Star Wars toys to Marvel memorabilia, Hembrough wowed fans with some marvelous finds including a classic Mickey Mouse and friends lunchbox and thermos. He even brought fans on-stage to join in on the fun, challenging them to answer various trivia questions on the toys for a chance to win some Disney board games.

Radio Disney's Meg Donnelly

5. Radio Disney Presents Meg Donnelly
On Sunday, fans saw Radio Disney artist Meg Donnelly lighting up the stage with an electrifying performance. The 30-minute set was packed with dance numbers and special guest appearances as Donnelly sang some of her hit songs.

Disney on Broadway

6. Disney on Broadway: A 25th Anniversary Conversation with The Stars
After hitting the big stage (aka Hall D23) for Disney On Broadway in Concert: A 25th Anniversary Celebration, some of Broadway’s brightest stars—Ashley Brown, Gavin Lee, Heidi Blickenstaff, Alton Fitzgerald White, Kissy Simmons and Josh Strickland—hit the small stage for an intimate conversation with fans about their Disney on Broadway experiences.

Marc Davis The Haunted Mansion

7. Marc Davis and the Masters Behind the Haunted Mansion
On the last day of D23 Expo, some ghoulishly good fun materialized at Center Stage as author and imaginer Chris Merritt gave fans a rare, behind-the-scenes look at one of Disneyland’s most iconic attractions, Haunted Mansion. While speaking to a packed house, well, floor, Merritt showed concept art from Disney Legend, animator and Imagineer Marc Davis who had an important hand in bringing the “swinging wake” to life.

30 Days of Disney September

Modern Moments

By Jeffrey Epstein

For 10 seasons, ABC’s Modern Family has delighted us with unbelievably hilarious situations, heartwarming family connections, and even a trip to Disneyland. We asked some of the stars of the show, now entering its 11th and final season, to share some of their favorite memories of making this beloved show (and some are surprisingly similar!).

Rico Rodriguez (Manny Delgado)

Rico Rodriguez (Manny Delgado)
It’s hard to choose just one favorite moment, but one that stands out is when we celebrated 200 episodes. When we got to 100 episodes the feeling was, Wow, we actually did this. But to celebrate 200!? It was such a surreal feeling, just how special this show is, and to be able to do it with my second family made it that more amazing.

Jeremy Maguire (Joe Pritchett)

Jeremy Maguire (Joe Pritchett)
My favorite moment has to be the week we went to Lake Tahoe. It was like one giant vacation with all of my friends! Also, I really enjoy our holiday and wrap parties. We get to show off our dance moves!

Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell Pritchett)

Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell Pritchett)
It was great traveling to Australia with our show. We were welcomed with such open arms by our fans there. We spent 10 days shooting that episode. It became a vacation with our entire cast and crew. It was definitely a bonding experience.

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons (Lily Tucker-Pritchett)

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons (Lily Tucker-Pritchett)
My favorite experience so far was the episode in Australia. Everything about it was so much fun, and it was so exciting to be in a different country. The fans down there were really into the show and would even come up to us in the streets and give us candy and stuffed animals. Also, when my TV dads got married, that was really special to be a part of!

Ed O’Neill (Jay Pritchett)

Ed O’Neill (Jay Pritchett)
My favorite moment was sitting on the roof of a house boat on Lake Tahoe, at sunset with the entire Modern Family cast singing “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” by Bonnie Tyler.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance: Incredible Details Announced!

Can you believe it? The time has come… Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is now open at Walt Disney World Resort! And just in time, our friends at the Disney Parks Blog have revealed some truly incredible new details about Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance—the highly anticipated attraction coming in December to Disney’s Hollywood Studios (and in January to Disneyland park).

When Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance opens, the harrowing adventure—one of the most ambitious, advanced, and immersive experiences ever undertaken by Walt Disney Imagineering—will blur the lines between fantasy and reality, putting guests right in the center of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance! Guests will join the Resistance and depart from Batuu in a transport ship to meet General Leia Organa at a secret rendezvous point; along the way, they’ll be captured by a First Order Star Destroyer. The action will ramp up as guests try to escape the clutches of Kylo Ren and the First Order… aided by their fellow Resistance heroes, of course.

One of the largest attractions ever created, its building is gigantic enough to house two full-sized AT-AT walkers and a Star Destroyer hangar bay—complete with a TIE fighter and a veritable fortress of Stormtroopers!

We can’t wait to experience it all in person! But until then, no matter where we reside, we can all enjoy the replay of this week’s awesome Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge dedication ceremony—which aired live on the Disney Parks Blog this past Wednesday morning. Click here to check it out.

Behind-the-Scenes Look at Oogie Boogie Bash’s DescenDANCE Party

For those of you as excited for Halloween season as we are, you’ll be happy to know that Disney California Adventure park’s Oogie Boogie Bash – A Disney Halloween Party—a separately ticketed event on select nights—kicks off this September 17. And just this week, the Disney Parks Blog offered up a super-cool behind-the-scenes look at one of the party’s marquee events: the “DescenDANCE Party” in the Backlot area of Hollywood Land. Take a peek at the killer VK dance crew in action, above.

Inspired by the fan-favorite Descendants movie series on Disney Channel, it combines the entertainment of a show with the interactivity of a dance party.
