Young Woman and the Sea Dives into the Life of a Groundbreaking Hero

By Moss Cohen

Trudy Ederle may not be a household name, but Walt Disney Studios’ Young Woman and the Sea, which hits theaters this weekend, is looking to change that.

“I love the story about Trudy and the fact that nobody’s ever heard of her before,” Jerry Bruckheimer, the film’s producer, said. “I felt audiences around the world should know about this amazing athlete who accomplished something back when it wasn’t kind of cool for women to be in the water.”

Daisy Ridley, who stars as Trudy and is an executive producer on the film, added that she loves how supportive Disney has been in helping tell Ederle’s story.

“A lot of people have said they haven’t seen a film like this in a little while,” she noted. “We had to have really good support in order to facilitate that.”

In a scene from Young Woman and the Sea, Trudy Ederle, played by Daisy Ridley, smiles in a swim lane. She is wearing a yellow swim cap.

After battling punishingly cold waters, jelly fish, and intense fatigue over the course of 14 hours and 34 minutes, Ederle became the first woman to swim the 21 miles of the English Channel — faster than any of the five men that had come before her. Her accomplishment was greeted with one of the biggest ticker-tape parades ever for an athlete.

And now her story gets the big screen treatment.

See It Big

Director Joachim Rønning captured Ederle’s journey in a way that “is undeniably awe inspiring on the big screen,” Ridley said.

In a movie theater, “you really get to experience that in its grandiose setting” she added.

“That scope, particularly watching it on a cinema screen, is so undeniable,” Ridley continued. “The majesty of what you’re witnessing and also this tiny speck of a person next to this boat who did this unbelievable feat.”

In a scene from Young Woman and the Sea, Trudy Ederle, played by Daisy Ridley, swims in open water as a ship sails nearby.

The joy of seeing Young Woman and the Sea in a theater extends not only to the grand sweep of the wide-open seas, but also to the immersive sound design and the meticulous work of production designer Nora Takacs Ekberg.

“What she created is so unbelievable,” Ridley explained. “Even the apartment [Trudy’s family] live in, the attention to detail is so stunning. Oscar Faura, our eirector of photography, the way it was filmed is so beautiful. And it really is this very intimate story, but obviously in a very large scale for a lot of it.”

In a scene from Young Woman and the Sea, Henry Ederle Jr., played by Ethan Rouse, Henry Ederle, played by Kim Bodnia, Margaret Ederle, played by Tilda Cobham-Hervey, and Trudy Ederle, played by Daisy Ridley sit around the dinner table as Gertrud Ederle, played by Jeanette Hain, serves dinner.

“It Had to Be Real”

A key challenge for Ridley was accurately portraying Ederle’s swimming skills.

“I trained for three months,” Ridley said. “We filmed and I also had to train after the filming day and on the weekends.”

To accomplish the proper effect of Ederle swimming through the English Channel, Ridley was filmed swimming in actual open waters in the Black Sea.

While filming a scene from Young Woman and the Sea, Trudy Ederle, played by Daisy Ridley, swims close to the ship where Jabez Wolffe, played by Christopher Eccleston, hangs over the side and hands her an apple. The crew is on the boat capturing the moment.

“It just feels like it had to be real” to allow audiences to connect with the story, Ridley said.

Bruckheimer noted that the film tried to “make it as real as possible.”

“There are plenty of visual effects movies, but it’s a true story,” he said. “You want to keep true as possible.”

In a scene from Young Woman and the Sea, Trudy Ederle, played by Daisy Ridley, is slathered in porpoise fat and wearing a swim cap and goggles. She faces the open water.

“A Perfect Movie for Disney”

Bruckheimer felt that Young Woman and the Sea was “such a perfect movie for Disney.”

And he should know, having produced almost 30 films with the studio over the last three decades.

“It’s an emotional story,” he said. “We all want to go to the cinema and be transported some place. And this takes you on this journey.”

In a scene from Young Woman and the Sea, Gertrud Ederle, played by Jeanette Hain, and Trudy Ederle, played by Daisy Ridley, embrace each other on the beach at night.

It harkens back to other Disney classics such as Remember the Titans, Miracle, and Invincible.

When screened for test audiences, Young Woman came back with the highest ratings for a film Bruckheimer has produced since The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, over 20 years ago.

“I think that’s what resonates with audiences. They laugh, they cry. There’s humor in it. There’s a lot of emotion,” Bruckheimer explained. “Emotion is one that wins it every time for an audience.”

He added, “I love the story about Trudy and the fact that nobody’s ever heard of her before.”

“Now, people will know who she is,” Bruckheimer said.

Young Woman and the Sea will open in select theaters May 31, 2024.

By Sohrab Osati

Star Wars fans, get ready for a lightspeed jump to The High Republic Era that’s set in a galaxy far, far, far away with the upcoming Disney+ series, The Acolyte. The books in this era showcase the Jedi at their best, defending the galaxy against threats like marauding pirates called the Nihil, and ravenous plant-like creatures known as the Drengir.

Exclusively streaming on Disney+, The Acolyte premieres on June 4—and it’s all set against the vibrant backdrop of the High Republic, but deals with the threat of a different kind of darkness in this era.

Celebrating 30 Years of Disney on Broadway—a Global Theatrical Phenomenon

By Zach Johnson

Disney Theatrical Group’s origin story begins with a tale as old as time.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast opened at the Palace Theatre in New York in 1994, setting the stage for future productions such as The Lion King, Aladdin, and Frozen. Today, Disney Theatrical Group is among the most successful commercial theater producers in the world, bringing its 10 Broadway titles have been seen by nearly 230 million theatregoers in 38 countries.

Although Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Beauty and the Beast (1991) was a triumph—it was the first animated feature film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards®—its success on the Broadway stage was anything but assured.

"Be Our Guest" from Beauty and the Beast on Broadway

“It was really the Parks folks, Bob McTyre and [Disney Legend] Ron Logan, along with Michael Eisner [then-CEO of The Walt Disney Company], who brought Beauty to Broadway,” recalls Thomas Schumacher, Chief Creative Officer, Disney Theatrical Group. “They used some of the legal staff from Walt Disney Studios and brought in an outside management company. There wasn’t a Disney Theatrical Group then. There was no plan.”

As Disney on Broadway marks its 30th anniversary, cast members from around the world perform in their respective country’s language on ABC News’ Good Morning America.

Schumacher—along with a group including director Rob Roth, choreographer Matt West, costume designer Ann Hould-Ward, lighting designer Natasha Katz, and book writer Linda Wolverton—were tapped to adapt the film for the Broadway stage. The first project for Walt Disney Theatrical Productions (as it was then known), Beauty and the Beast opened on April 18, 1994, later winning a Tony Award® and ultimately running for 5,461 performances.

Mere months after Beauty and the Beast launched on Broadway, Disney’s The Lion King premiered in movie theaters. “Myself, [then-President of Walt Disney Animation Studios] Peter Schneider, Michael Eisner, and [Disney Legend] Elton John were sitting together the day after the film premiered, and the question for Elton was: ‘What do you want to do next?'” Schumacher says. “Elton said, ‘I don’t think I want to do another movie right away, but didn’t you just open Beauty and the Beast onstage? I’d like to do something like that.’ We were developing Aida based on a book written by the great opera star Leontyne Price. I said, ‘It’s not really right for an animated movie. What about Aida a stage show?’ Everyone went, ‘Let’s to do that!’ We began to develop Aida on that day in June 1994, the very morning after The Lion King film premiered. Thus was actually born the enterprise of Disney Theatrical, using the impetus of our one-off productions of Beauty.”

Heather Headley and cast perform in Aida.

Time to Shine

As John and Disney Legend Time Rice were working on Aida, a stage adaptation of The Lion King was commissioned. Featuring songs such as “Circle of Life” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” the show premiered at the New Amsterdam Theater on November 13, 1997. It then moved to the Minskoff Theatre on June 13, 2006, where it continues to entertain Broadway audiences eight times a week.

In fact, The Lion King— originally directed by Disney Legend and Tony Award winner, Julie Taymor—is the most successful Broadway show in history, winning six Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

“We were rolling out Beauty and the Beast around the world, and Aida took a backseat to The Lion King,” Schumacher says. “After those shows opened, we were off to the races. Beauty was in many ways the catalyst, because it inspired the whole idea to expand our scope.”

The cast of Mary Poppins performs on Broadway.

In the years that followed, Disney Theatrical Group would open several other shows on Broadway, including Tarzan, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, Newsies, and Frozen—many of which spawned international and touring productions. Among the more successful productions was Aladdin, adapted from the 1992 animated feature film. Now in its 10th year on Broadway, Aladdin is playing at the New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street. Internationally, the musical is currently on tour in the UK and is playing at the Coliseum Theatre in Madrid and the Dentsu Shiki Theatre in Tokyo.

Michael James Scott (Genie) and Michael Maliakel (Aladdin) lead the Broadway company of Aladdin in a performance of ” Friend Like Me” in honor of its 10th anniversary.

Going Global

Within the past three decades, Disney Theatrical Group and its local partners have staged dozens of productions across six continents (excluding Antarctica). Today, 20 Disney musicals are playing in eight countries worldwide, each performed in their local languages.

“It’s a very complicated process. We’re not just translating the language; we’re making cultural adjustments,” Schumacher says. “For example, the Genie in Aladdin doesn’t resonate in the same way that Michael James Scott and James Monroe Iglehart before him performed the character. They’re channeling this Cab Calloway, Harlem Renaissance jazz, Fats Waller vibe, which was actually what [Disney Legends] Howard Ashman and Alan Menken wrote for the film. Well, that doesn’t mean anything in Japan. There, the actor plays it with a vernacular that is similar to a game show host, since that resonates in Japan.”

"Seize the Day" from Newsies on Broadway

No matter where a show is staged, it resonates in a way that is both current and timeless. “To so many people, inside and outside of the company, Disney is the story of people’s lives—the stories they grew up with,” Schumacher says. “In theater, we play it over and over. The audience often comes back and sees it differently, because of who they are now.”

That experience reminds Schumacher of his own 30-year journey with Disney Theatrical Group. “I started working on The Lion King in November 1990, and I meet so many people who have grown up with The Lion King. They were young Simba, and they were grown-up Simba, and now they’re Mufasa. They have gone through loss in their families, and they’ve gone through tragedy. When villainy has entered their lives, they’ve defeated it,” he explains. “The Lion King is such a metaphor because it’s a simple myth that it applies to everyone. It’s about family. It’s about community. It’s about loyalty. It’s about making mistakes and trying to set them right and do the right thing. These are values we all share.”

Our 11 Favorite Music Docs and Concert Films on Disney+

By the D23 Team

At Thanksgiving in 2021, we were especially thankful for The Beatles: Get Back. Often referred to as the most influential band of all time, The Beatles are the best-selling music act in history… and Oscar®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson is the only person in 50 years to be given exclusive access to the legendary band’s private film archives! Jackson later used that footage as the foundation of his three-part docuseries, available exclusively on Disney+. Of course, The Beatles: Get Back isn’t the only music doc or concert film available for Disney+ subscribers. Below, in chronological order, we present 11 of our favorite titles:

Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert

Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert (2008)
Consider this your backstage pass to hang out with Miley Cyrus, star of Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana. Filmed during her sold-out, 69-city, standing-room-only tour, the documentary film features appearances by Disney Legend Kenny Ortega and the Jonas Brothers. As Hannah Montana, Cyrus performs hit songs such as “Nobody’s Perfect” and “Rock Star”—and as herself, she rocks out to “See You Again,” “Start All Over,” and more.

Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience

Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience (2009)
If you didn’t get your Jonas Brothers fix in Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, this should do it! Follow the trio on their Burnin’ Up tour, which includes special collaborations with Demi Lovato (“This Is Me”) and Taylor Swift (“Should’ve Said No”). This is a special look at what the Jonas Brothers’ lives are like both on- and off-stage.

Folklore: The Long Pond Sessions

Folklore: The Long Pond Sessions (2020)
Speaking of Swift, we’re still obsessing over this intimate concert performance of every song from her Grammy®-nominated album folklore. Accompanied by her co-producers, Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff, Swift shares the creation and meaning behind each song.

Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles

Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles (2021)
Grammy® Award winner Billie Eilish performs every song from her sophomore album, Happier Than Ever, in sequential order from the stage of the legendary Hollywood Bowl. Featuring animated elements that take viewers on a dreamlike journey through Eilish’s hometown, the concert film also includes guest appearances by FINNEAS and other artists. (Because we can’t get enough of Eilish’s brilliance, we recommend following this up with The Making of Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles, released on Disney+ Day.)

The Beatles: Get Back

The Beatles: Get Back (2021)
How do you tell a new story about The Beatles? If you’re Jackson, you start by combing through over 60 hours of unseen footage and over 150 hours of unheard audio. The Beatles: Get Back is the story of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr as they plan their first live show in over two years, capturing the writing and rehearsing of 14 new songs, originally intended for release on an accompanying live album. The three-part documentary features—for the first time in its entirety—their last live performance as a group, the unforgettable rooftop concert on London’s Savile Row, as well as other songs and classic compositions featured on the band’s final two albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be.

Olivia Rodrigo, in sunglasses and black coat with brown faux fur accents, sits in a director’s chair in a field. The back of the director’s chair is facing the camera and features the word “Sunset” in white text. Olivia has turned her body around in the chair so she is facing the audience. Behind her is a blue sky with fluffy white clouds.

Olivia Rodrigo: driving home 2 u (2022)
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star turned musical tour-de-force Olivia Rodrigo takes a literal trip down memory lane in this behind-the-scenes film. Traveling from Salt Lake City, where she began writing her triple-platinum debut album “SOUR” (Geffen Records), to Los Angeles, Rodrigo recounts the story of “SOUR” along with performing new live arrangements of her songs and sharing intimate interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.

Elton John, wearing a bejeweled robe designed to mimic a Dodgers uniform, has his back to the camera, arms wide while facing a massive crowd inside Dodgers Stadium.

Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium (2022)
Originally livestreamed on Disney+, this historic concert was one of the greatest send-offs of all time to global superstar Elton John. Paying tribute to his 1975 performance at Dodgers Stadium that cemented his global success, the three-hour concert event features guest artists such as Dua Lipa and Kiki Dee honoring John with duet performances, along with John himself performing beloved hits including “Bennie and the Jets,” “Tiny Dancer,” “I’m Still Standing,” “Crocodile Rock,” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”

Taylor Swift, wearing a sparkly iridescent body suit, looks out into the distance while playing a pink guitar. A pink and purple microphone and stand is directed at her face, although she appears to not currently be singing.

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) (2024)
Get out your friendship bracelets, Swifties, because the record-breaking phenomenon concert film Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour has debuted on Disney+ with a special (Taylor’s Version) cut! Capturing the epic tour that took the world by storm, Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) not only showcases Taylor Swift’s career-spanning Eras Tour concert, but also features four additional main show songs not shown during the film’s theatrical run. Plus, stay through the credits to enjoy an acoustic collection of four unseen performances, including fan favorites “You Are in Love” and “Maroon.”

In a vintage black and white photo, Brian Wilson sits at a piano, immersed in song with his eyes closed as he plays. Standing beside him from left to right are the other members of The Beach Boys: Al Jardine, Mike Love, Carl Wilson, and Dennis Wilson, who are singing along.

The Beatles: Let It Be (2024)
The Beatles: Let It Be, now streaming on Disney+, represents the fully realized version of director Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s original documentary. Shot in 1969, the film captures The Beatles as they wrote and rehearsed for what would become the Let It Be album. Despite its limited availability over the years, the film became famous for its iconic rooftop concert finale. Its significance has only grown following Peter Jackson’s 2021 docuseries, The Beatles: Get Back.

In a black and white photo, singer Bon Jovi stands onstage, raising a microphone on a stand above his head with his right hand. He is clad in a leather jacket, a partially unbuttoned shirt, and trousers. Three headlights behind him cast beams.

Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story (2024)
Hulu’s documentary series Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story delves into the band’s remarkable journey spanning over 40 years, from humble beginnings performing in gritty rock clubs in New Jersey to recreating platinum records and being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The four-part series, available on Disney+, also takes a close look into lead singer Bon Jovi’s vocal injury, which nearly led him to quit the band.

The Beatles are performing a song. From left to right, Paul McCartney is sitting on a chair away from the camera, playing a guitar, George Harrison is sitting opposite McCartney, playing a guitar, Ringo Starr is at the drums, and John Lennon is sitting on a chair away from the camera, playing a guitar. There’s a red ombre backdrop behind them.

The Beach Boys (2024)
Directed by Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny, this Disney+ Original film includes interviews with Brian Wilson, Mike Love, David Marks, and Al Jardine, along with clips featuring Lindsey Buckingham, Don Was, and others. The Beach Boys is a tribute to the legendary band that transformed pop music, creating an iconic, harmonious sound that embodied the California dream.

What’s Coming to Disney Experiences in 2024 and Beyond

By Moss Cohen

“It’s something that will never be finished. Something that I can keep developing, keep plussing and adding to. It’s alive. It will be a live breathing thing that will need change.”

Walt Disney’s words about Disneyland have remained a guiding principle for the Disney Experiences segment since they were first uttered roughly 70 years ago. The summer of 2024 is just the latest example of Disney expanding its present and building towards a great, big, beautiful tomorrow.

Here’s a look at some of the latest Disney Experiences developments from all around the globe:

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

On June 28, guests at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida will return to the New Orleans of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ The Princess and the Frog to float along on a musical journey in Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

The all-new attraction picks up after the events of the 2009 film, where visitors experience an adventure through the bayou as Princess Tiana prepares to host a Mardi Gras celebration.

Princess Tiana Audio-Animatronic

Guests will encounter dozens of technologically advanced Audio-Animatronic figures during their ride, including beloved characters like Princess Tiana, Louis, and Mama Odie, along with new critters and characters. New arrangements of songs from the film — and a new original tune — will serenade guests as they make their way towards a 50-foot drop.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will also open later this year at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California.

Fantasy Springs

Fantasy Springs — the eighth themed port at Tokyo DisneySea Park — welcomes guests on June 6.

It brings to life new areas inspired by three of Disney Animation’s most beloved films — Rapunzel’s Forest from 2010’s Tangled, Peter Pan’s Never Land from 1953’s Peter Pan, and Frozen Kingdom from the 2013 blockbuster, Frozen.

Fantasy Springs finds itself nestled between Tokyo DisneySea’s Lost River Delta and the Arabian Coast areas and the new port will be an entryway for guests into the magical worlds of these films.

Each will include innovative attractions, stunning restaurants, and the Tokyo DisneySea Fantasy Springs Hotel.

Setting Sail

Disney Cruise Line is looking to bring enjoyment to guests by sea and by land this year.

In June, Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, Disney Cruise Line’s newest tropical retreat opens on the island of Eleuthera, The Bahamas.

The destination celebrates the rich culture and natural beauty of The Bahamas, with signature Disney entertainment, port adventures and nature trails, a water play area and beautiful beaches, including a dedicated beach for adults. The retreat will feature a plethora of activities for the whole family to enjoy.

As Disney Cruise Line looks to add three new ships to its fleet through 2025, its latest vessel, Disney Treasure, is also set to take its maiden voyage on December 21.

Reimagined Classics

One of the very last attractions that Walt Disney personally helped develop, the Country Bear Musical Jamboree, is undergoing a refresh that will open this summer.

While the Country Bear Musical Jamboree will include call backs, the bears will sing new, reinterpreted Disney tunes in different genres of country music – like bluegrass, pop-country, Americana, rockabilly and other styles.

On May 24, Disneyland Resort guests will once again be able to enjoy the dazzling special effects of Fantasmic! as the beloved show makes its epic return.

And on June 10, EPCOT at Walt Disney World will welcome guests to CommuniCore Hall and Plaza. The Hall and Plaza are flexible multi-use event spaces that bring exhibitions, entertainment and even more culinary delights to the center of EPCOT.

Fan-Favorite Festivals and Events

And of course, there are always the seasonal festivals and events that offer a unique spin on a Disney parks visit.

  • From August 9 to October 31, families can delight in the frightful fun of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.
  • EPCOT guests can taste their way around the world at the International Food & Wine Festival, from August 29 to November 23.
  • And currently, fans can see the worlds of Pixar come alive at Pixar Fest at Disneyland. Running from April 26 through August 4, guests of all ages can celebrate with daytime parades, nighttime spectaculars, and encounters with their favorite Pixar characters.

Beyond 2024

And that’s just this year.

Going forward, Disney fans can keep an eye out for updates on DisneylandForward, which includes a planned Avatar Experience at Disneyland.

There’s also fresh expansions coming to the Magic Kingdom, exploring the Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom, more cruise ships with their own unique themes, an ongoing effort to reimagined Disneyland Paris, a newly rebuilt Space Mountain at Tokyo Disney Resort in 2027, and much more.

The Walt Disney Company announced last year that it is developing plans to accelerate and expand investment in its Parks, Experiences and Products segment to nearly double capital expenditures over the course of approximately 10 years to roughly $60 billion. So, with plenty happening across the globe now and through the next decade, Disney Experiences is as alive as Walt could’ve ever hoped it would be.
